Home Office approval stats 2005-2026

We're currently in the waiting stage, so I did what any normal person would do and had a look through the Home Office's published visa statistics to see the real odds. I pulled every entry clearance partner visa decision from 2005 to March 2026 about 958,000 of them.

TL;DR: roughly 93–95% of decided partner visa applications get approved, and it's been that way since 2020. Last year: 40,528 issued vs 3,016 refused.

Year Issued Refused Approval
2005 49,348 8,488 85.3%
2010 40,466 8,509 82.6%
2014 26,944 10,328 72.3%
2019 40,317 5,492 88.0%
2023 60,648 3,147 95.1%
2025 40,614 3,026 93.1%

Here's the full year-by-year graph.

It's high for pretty much all nationalities too. Here's 2021–2025 for the highest-volume countries:

Nationality Decided Approval
Pakistan 48,812 95.1%
India 16,544 94.2%
United States 14,145 96.2%
Bangladesh 11,345 94.4%
Nepal 7,949 98.0%
Nigeria 7,582 91.3%
Philippines 6,587 95.3%
Turkey 6,483 94.8%
Albania 4,085 85.9%

Obviously none of this makes the waiting less difficult. But if you've done the work on your financial and relationship evidence, the numbers are massively on your side. Telling myself that too.

New subreddit for earned settlement discussions and updates

Dear r/SpouseVisaUk

As we all know the new earned settlement proposed changes remain uncertain. As we or our families could be affected, it's understandable that people would want to share news, updates, opinions or discuss any new development as it happens, even on a daily basis. For this reason, I created a new subreddit, r/UKEarnedSettlement.

This new subreddit caters to people who are or will be affected by the new proposed settlement rules. Posts and comments from their families, friends, or supportive members of the UK society are also welcomed, as well as from immigrant advocacy groups and charities.

This sub is for sharing news and opinions, discussing developments from the proposal or government announcements, as well as providing opportunity for people to get updates on recent changes.

Posts that usually get removed from r/ukvisa, r/SpouseVisaUk or r/SkilledWorkerVisaUK for being political will be welcomed. While political topics will be allowed, only respectful and tolerant behaviour will be accepted.

Thanks for the mods for allowing this post.

Hi everyone.

• Upvotes

My visa is expiring Feb 2027 and my partner and I are looking to apply for a spousal visa for me. My partner has lived in the uk since July 2022 and I since September 2023. He has a pre settled status but I keep seeing online and gov website that he has to have a settled status for us to be able to apply for the spousal visa for me. Does anyone have an idea of what can be done?

They must be mad 😆

Posting just so people know these emails seem to come out randomly for no apparent reason

Spouse visa — stayed in Morocco for months before moving to the UK. Anyone in the same situation?

• Upvotes

Hello ☺️
I’m Moroccan, married to a British citizen, and my spouse visa was granted in March 2026.
I entered the UK in April but returned to Morocco after 2 weeks because of my job. I’ve spent most of the following months in Morocco while my husband stayed mainly in the UK as I couldn’t leave my job earlier.
I’m moving to the UK permanently, but I’m worried this could affect my spouse visa extension or ILR.
Has anyone stayed abroad for several months after getting their spouse visa for work and still successfully received their extension or ILR? Did UKVI ask questions about your absences?
I’d really appreciate hearing from people with real experiences. Thank you! ❤️

Spouse visa approved after months of waiting.

I had my biometrics done on 16/6 26 but only received my approval last week (mid October..). Not gonna lie..living almost half a year without my kids was brutal..I missed their bdays, school plays..made me really traumatised as they are only 4 and 7 yrs old. I feel like after the 12 week period passed and I paid the £3 to ask why its taking so long (and got a generic response that said nothing useful) , we contacted our local MP and then I got the decision. So I feel like that maybe helped?! It also said my application was approved mid September but they only sent the email mid October?! I can't believe we are all paying for this:( Good luck everyone!!!

what is my best choice here

hi everyone, i’m a 20 year old from the Netherlands. I have been with my long distance partner for a bit over 3 years now and we want to close to distance.

However this is a bit complicated as I’m not sure what the best thing to do would be. I currently work 2 jobs one in a cinema and one as a house cleaner for elderly people who can’t themselves.

My partner works and lives in the UK and has only recently started earning above the minimum spousal visa requirements. (30k)

My partner has an Irish grandfather which could (maybe?) give him an Irish passport to make it easier for him to come to me though I’m not really sure how that goes to work and how long it will take.

I have a lot of things here already for moving out so I would have to take this into consideration when moving abroad, I have my car and stuff like furniture and my gaming setup, clothes and a lot of other things I’d have to bring along which could be quite expensive to bring over.

My fear with the UK spousal visa is it getting rejected, as you’ll not only lose the money but also don’t gain anything from it.

So I’m really not sure as to what would be the best play here, my partner doesn’t have a car or anything significant he’d take along but just his gaming setup likely and some clothes.

I nor my partner mind where we move to but he says he’d prefer to live here but hasn’t really moved forward with the potentially passport route. I don’t currently earn enough to sponsor him and I have to be 21 years old to do so, so I can’t do it via that route.

Any tips or advice would really be appreciated! Thank you in advance

🇫🇷Uk STANDARD OUTSIDE SPOUSE VISA APPROVED

Visa type: spouse/partner visa
Country: France
Application: 14th August
Biometrics: 18th August
Eco: 20th August
Bio reminder: 13th October
Approval: 27th October 3:38pm

Firstly, I want to say thank you to this subreddit, I have been snooping on here for a couple months and I only found it after my husband completed his spouse visa application and did his biometrics. I had done a lot of reaseach prior and added a lot of evidence in every section.

Relationship evidence consisted of
A pdf of our relationship timeline including pictures, boarding passes, our wedding, proposal, meeting each others family and communication, we was together at the time for 18 months and I documented every month. When we were not together we had communication evidence to back it up.

Separate PDF for passport stamps and boarding passes

Separate pdf for wedding photos

Me and my husbands passport

Previous immigration history, my partner had two ETA cancelled and border refusals at gate du nord and Calais and a visit visa refusal. Basically he was visiting me to much so we explained this all in the cover letter and had a separate section explaining that the travelling was going both ways.

I had two jobs one 28,000 per year and one was 4000 per year and I had to provide 12 months of bank statements and 12 months of payslips from both jobs
I also added the employment letters from both jobs the employer contract and my P60 as well as my national insurance contributions for the last financial year (don’t think I needed to but I did it just in case)

I also added his passed English language test.

A copy of my tenenacy agreement and council tax bill.

The wait was the worst but I’m so happy it finally happened to me and my husband and we get to be together in the UK 🫶🏽

Entering on Visa for the First Time NI Specific Question

hey! ive seen many conflicting answers online, but id like some real responses lol. im applying from usa, midwest area, so the main airport id be using is Chicago (ORD). i applied in sept. this year, my final destination would be in NI. there are no direct flights from ORD to NI. when i have visited, i have flown into dublin, and then taken a bus to belfast. this has been the easiest option for us. the issue we are running into is that google is giving us mixed results on how to properly enter for the first time on visa.

if anyone has successfully applied to stay in NI on a spouse visa, what course of flights did you take? and what was the process? (eVisa? Physical stamping?)

Uk Priority Spouse Visa- Applied from Outside the UK- Pakistan- 35 Working Days- Approved 🇵🇰🎉🥳🎊

Hi All- Hope you’re keeping Blessed. I can hardly believe I’m typing this but it’s time for me to share the good news with you all Alhamdulillah and to spread the love and good vibes. This post is to reassure anyone in the same boat not to worry and that their time will arrive too- IA. We went through a solicitor for peace of mind and had all the relevant docs well prepared and double checked.

I have enclosed my timeline below;

-3rd Sept 2026; Submitted the Application

-8th Sept 2026; My wife gave her biometrics from Karachi, Pakistan

-5th Oct: The Home Office asked me to resubmit my last 6 months bank statements which I had already submitted in the original application on the 3rd of Sept and they also asked for my wife’s ECTIS test which she is exempt from as she has a UOL degree which was taught in English from Pakistan. We had already submitted proof of why she dosent need this in the original application along with screenshots from the GoV Uk website explaining why she’s exempt

-5th Oct: My solicitor promptly responded, resubmitted my last 6 months statements which we had already provided and resubmitted proof of my wife not needing ECTIS from the Gov Uk website plus her degree and transcripts again- we didnt get a response

-14th October: My solicitor followed up and reiterated what we had submitted again

-14th October; we reached a generic automated response from the home office

-16th Oct; Delay email received from the home office

-19th Oct: I contacted an MP asking them to escalate my case

-22nd Oct: I made a paid email enquiry and a paid phone call to the home office to follow up

-22nd Oct: I received a response from the home office starting my case was “Awaiting a response”

-23rd Oct; I received an email from my MP stating that they have reached out to the home office

-26th Oct; I called the home office again at 5:12pm again, chasing the case- their response was
“Awaiting a decision”

-26th Oct; My solicitor received the approval email at 2:56pm, however this has gone into her junk mail.

I had also made multiple paid phone calls in the last week- including the one I made last evening at 5:12pm- strangely, even though my wife received her approval at 2:56pm yesterday, the 26th Of October- I was not aware of this due to it going into my solicitors junk mail- the call I made later still said “awaiting a decision” even though the case has actually been approved 3 hours prior to this call.

The moral of the story is; guys please be patient- please keep your hopes up and be positive. You will get generic responses and a lack of communication from the home office- but as long as you meet the requirements, are proactive and have all bases covered. It’s a matter of time before you get an approval IA.

I’m happy to answer any questions anyone has to to help and support in any way possible.

All the best ❤️

Pre application - Spouse visa - Meeting income requirements.

I asked a question a few weeks ago about qualification with non employment income :

My question now we are a little closer to sending in this application.

Do I have to show proof of these incomes being paid going forward, or do I simply need to show proof that it has been paid regularly in the past.

It does look as though the Insurance income may go away after 6 months of Non US residency.
I do have a form from them that shows that this "is payable until the claimant reaches the age of 67" which would be approx 14 months away at time we submit the application,

But .. we are able to show monthly payments going into bank account going back 8-9 years ...

If we simply need to show payments going in via bank statements, we will be fine, if we have to prove future payments will be ongoing, then we will need to backup with savings, which is doable, but which makes it a little more complicated.

I was hoping to be able to use proof of past income .. and not have to worry about showing a chunk in the bank, then once the house sells we would have that money in the bank for the extension after 2 years .. even though the insurance payments will have gone away by then, and the disability pension would have been replaced by a regular social security pension for the same amount.

Prior discussion :

https://www.reddit.com/r/SpouseVisaUk/s/e9ROiWibdj

""Non-employment income"

under categories C and E :

Category C : Non-employment income – requirements

The following are sources of non-employment income which can be counted towards
the financial requirement under Category C:

• ongoing insurance payments

• ongoing payments from a structured legal settlement

Unless otherwise specified, the specified non-employment income which the
applicant’s partner or the applicant have received in the 12 months prior to the date
of application can be counted towards the financial requirement.
The relevant asset on which any income is based must be in the name of the
applicant, their partner or both jointly and held or owned at the date of application"

"Category E: Pension – requirements

The gross annual income from any State (UK Basic State Pension and Additional or
Second State Pension, HM Forces Pension or foreign), occupational or private
pension received by the applicant’s partner or the applicant can be counted towards
the financial requirement under Category E""

COVER LETTER

Hi, could you please advise me on what information I should include in the relationship cover letter for my fiancé visa application?

I would like to clarify a few things:
How we met and how our relationship started.
The date we first met in person.
The place where we first met in person.

A brief timeline of our relationship and subsequent visits.

My main question is: Do I need to mention the exact place where we met during each subsequent visit, or is it sufficient to mention the date and location of our first meeting and briefly summarise the visits that followed?
Could you please suggest what level of detail would be appropriate for the relationship cover letter?

Thank you for your advice.

Unmarried Partner Visa UK - 2 year relationship but only 4 months cohabitation, PIP/UC sponsor - How strong is our application and what evidence do we need?

Hi everyone!
I’m looking for some advice from anyone who has successfully applied for a UK unmarried partner visa, particularly those who haven’t lived together for two years or whose partner receives PIP.
I’ve recently submitted my application and paid the fees, but I’m preparing my supporting documents and would really appreciate some honest feedback on how strong my application is and whether there’s anything I should improve.
Our circumstances:
I’m an Indian citizen currently living in the UK on a Graduate visa, which expires on 7 November 2026.
I moved to the UK in January 2022 on a Student visa and graduated from a UK university in 2024.
My partner is a British citizen.
We met through Hinge in August 2024 and started our relationship in September 2024, so we’ve been together for just over two years.
We started living together in June 2026, meaning we’ve only officially cohabited for around four months.
Before moving in together, I rented my own accommodation and regularly stayed over at my partner’s flat several times a week. We didn’t move in sooner because our relationship was still developing and he was already committed to a tenancy.
We’re a same-sex couple, and returning to India would create additional difficulties due to my family’s views on homosexuality and the pressure I’ve experienced to marry a woman.
Our financial situation:
I’m employed full time as an Assistant Manager and earn approximately £2,000 per month after tax. I’ve been with my employer since November 2024.
My partner receives Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Universal Credit. He is also registered with HMRC as a self-employed sole trader working in events, so his earnings vary.
I understand that because my partner receives PIP, we may qualify under the adequate maintenance requirement rather than the standard minimum income requirement.
We rent privately and pay £1,700 monthly between us (£850 each), with council tax, water and WiFi included. We share electricity and household expenses.
My partner recently updated his Universal Credit claim to reflect that we live together, so his entitlement may be reassessed.
Relationship evidence we have or can obtain:
Photos together covering our relationship, including dates, holidays and special occasions.
Messages and communication history going back to 2024.
Bank transfers between us, including transactions from before we lived together.
Evidence of shared rent and household expenses.
Bank statements and other correspondence showing our current shared address.
A joint Revolut account, although it was only opened recently and hasn’t been actively used.
Potential supporting letters from our landlord, family and friends.
Evidence of our separate addresses before June 2026 and an explanation of why we weren’t cohabiting.
Most utilities are only in my partner’s name, so we don’t have much joint correspondence.
My main questions:
How strong is our unmarried partner visa application? Has anyone been approved with a relationship lasting over two years but only a few months of cohabitation?
What evidence is most important for proving a genuine and durable relationship when you haven’t lived together for two years? How much evidence should we aim to provide from before June 2026?
The Home Office document checklist asks for correspondence covering two years. Since we’ve only lived together since June, how should we approach this requirement?
For the adequate maintenance requirement, what financial documents should we submit? Would my payslips, my partner’s PIP award letter, UC statements and bank statements be sufficient, or is a separate calculation needed?
My partner is self-employed as a sole trader. What evidence should we provide for his income? Would bank statements and invoices be enough, or would HMRC tax returns and other records be necessary?
The application recorded “No” to whether my partner was working, because the following questions appeared to be designed for salaried employment. However, I separately declared his sole trader income under other income sources. Should this be clarified or corrected?
Would a landlord’s letter confirming we both live at the property, alongside evidence of our individual rent payments, be sufficient accommodation evidence?
Would you recommend including a personal relationship statement from each of us explaining how our relationship developed, why we initially lived apart, and our future plans?
For anyone who has been approved recently, what documents do you think made the biggest difference to your application?
I’m particularly interested in hearing from anyone whose British partner received PIP or UC, or who applied after the changes to the unmarried partner cohabitation guidance.
I want to make sure we’ve provided everything necessary and that our evidence presents our relationship accurately and clearly.
I’d really appreciate any advice, experiences, or potential red flags you can identify. Thank you so much!

Bumpy application & long wait time - any advice?

Have been married to my british sponsor for 8 years, together 10 yrs, children… the whole shebang.

In the middle of a standard application (not expedited) the sponsor lost his job and we therefore showed proof of financial independence to meet the ££ amount.

The application was started in May, with lots of communication along the way but nothing from UK decision center since early September. Does anyone have insight?

Details:

Visa type: Spouse
Nationality: Canadian / US (applied via Cdn passport)
Country of application: US
Date of application: 11/5/26
Date of biometrics: 13/5/26
Standard service

Spouse Visa Extension Timeline – October 2026 (Standard Service)

Visa type: Spouse visa extension (FLR(M))
Nationality: Bangladeshi
Country of application: UK (inside the UK)
Application date: 20 October 2026
Biometrics date: 21 October 2026
Service: Standard
How long does it usually take to get a decision these days? I’m planning to change jobs soon, so I’m trying to get an idea of the expected timeline.
Thanks!
