THE NIGHT THE DARKNESS SWALLOWED OUR STREET
A Terrifying Unexplained Encounter in Kennewick, Washington
Date of Incident: March 16, 2021
Location: Anderson Street, Kennewick, Washington
Witnesses: Two eyewitnesses
Evidence: Security camera screenshots from one of two separate surveillance systems
On the night of March 16, 2021, on Anderson Street in Kennewick, Washington, we experienced something so deeply disturbing and terrifying that, even years later, neither of us has been able to explain what we witnessed.
What began as an ordinary evening quickly turned into something that felt like it belonged in a nightmare.
It started when our home security system began triggering multiple motion detection alarms.
Naturally, we checked the security cameras, expecting to see someone walking through our yard, an animal passing by, or perhaps a vehicle moving along the street.
But what appeared on our cameras was something neither of us was prepared to see.
The darkness itself appeared to be moving.
At first, we noticed that the area farther out from our house was becoming unusually dark. But as we continued watching, something even stranger began happening.
The darkness appeared to be slowly advancing across our front yard, creeping toward our home.
And this wasn't ordinary darkness.
It didn't look like a passing shadow or simply an area without adequate lighting.
It looked as though something was actually sucking the light out of everything it touched.
The best way I can describe it is to imagine an enormous, invisible blanket of thick black ink slowly being dragged across an entire neighborhood.
Everything behind it became almost impossible to see.
The lights across the street disappeared into the blackness. Our neighbors' house, which was normally clearly visible from our security cameras, became nearly impossible to distinguish.
Even our white van, parked directly outside our home, began disappearing into the darkness. Portions of the vehicle that should have remained visible seemed to vanish into the black.
It was as though the world beyond this advancing darkness was slowly being erased.
But what makes this experience especially disturbing is that we weren't witnessing it through just one security camera.
We had two completely separate security camera systems positioned at different angles around our property.
Both systems captured the same strange phenomenon.
Unfortunately, I no longer have the footage from the second camera system, but we watched it happening on both systems that night.
And then there was something even more unsettling.
We could see it with our own eyes.
We went to the windows of our home and looked outside.
What we witnessed through the glass was the same thing our cameras were capturing.
The darkness seemed to be spreading across the property, swallowing the visibility of everything behind it as it moved closer and closer to our house.
The atmosphere was unlike anything I had ever experienced.
There was a strange heaviness to everything.
The air felt thick, oppressive, and deeply unsettling. There was an overwhelming feeling of dread that I still remember to this day.
We were both frightened.
We stood watching something unfold in front of our home that neither of us could begin to understand.
And the darkness kept coming.
Slowly.
Steadily.
Closer and closer.
It was almost as though the night itself was closing in around our house.
Then, just as the darkness appeared to be nearing our home, something happened that made the entire experience even more terrifying.
A tall, shadowy figure suddenly came flying down the sidewalk directly in front of our house.
The figure moved with incredible speed.
And at approximately the same time, we heard something that sent fear through both of us.
A deep, disturbing growl.
Then, almost immediately—
The darkness vanished.
Not gradually.
Not slowly fading away the way it had appeared to arrive.
It was simply gone.
The lights across the street were visible again.
The neighboring house reappeared.
The street, the yard, and the surroundings that had been swallowed by blackness were suddenly visible once more.
It was as though someone had pulled an enormous black curtain away from the neighborhood in a single instant.
Everything appeared normal again.
But nothing about what we had just experienced felt normal.
We were left frightened, confused, and struggling to make sense of what we had witnessed.
What caused the darkness?
Why did it appear to move toward our house?
How could the same strange phenomenon appear on two separate camera systems while also being visible through our windows?
And what was that tall, shadowy figure that moved so quickly down the sidewalk just before we heard the growl and the darkness disappeared?
To this day, we have no answers.
ABOUT THE ATTACHED PHOTOGRAPHS
I am including several images to help demonstrate what we witnessed that night.
The first photograph is a comparison image taken on July 20, 2021. It was captured by the exact same security camera, from the same position, on a different night.
In this image, you can clearly see our front yard, the white van, the street, the neighboring houses, and the surrounding lights.
It demonstrates the normal nighttime visibility from that camera.
The remaining screenshots were captured on March 16, 2021, during the unexplained incident.
In those images, the difference is dramatic.
Areas that should ordinarily have been visible are almost completely consumed by darkness.
The neighboring homes and distant lights become difficult or impossible to distinguish, and portions of our white van seem to disappear into the blackness.
The security footage also shows how the visibility changed throughout the incident.
These images are not from different cameras or different camera positions. They show the same view from the same security system.
Although I no longer possess the recordings from our second surveillance system, both systems showed the phenomenon that night.
And most importantly, there were two of us who witnessed it happening firsthand.
FIVE YEARS LATER, I STILL CANNOT EXPLAIN IT
I am submitting this experience because I would genuinely like to know whether anyone else has witnessed something similar.
I am not claiming to know what caused it, what the shadowy figure was, or whether there was any paranormal explanation.
I can only describe what we experienced.
And what we experienced was terrifying.
Even now, I can remember the feeling of standing inside our home, watching the familiar world outside seemingly disappear beneath a slowly advancing blanket of darkness.
I remember how heavy and oppressive everything felt.
I remember the fear.
I remember that tall shadowy figure moving down the sidewalk.
And I remember the deep growl that came just before the darkness vanished and the neighborhood became visible again.
Whatever happened on Anderson Street that night, it left an impression on both of us that has never faded.
Because the most frightening part wasn't simply that our street became dark.
It was watching that darkness appear to move toward us, slowly swallowing everything we could see.
And then, just before it reached our home, something moved through it.
We heard a growl.
And the darkness was gone.

An experience we have never forgotten. And one we still cannot explain.
