I highly doubt he cares that people remember he was in a series of movies that made billions of dollars
219
u/bubllyTrouble 29d ago
Yeah, seriously though, Twilight is one of the roles that made him massively famous in the first place
135
u/KeySecret9184 29d ago
It gave him the Daniel Radcliffe “fuck you” money to do whatever he wants.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2(2012) - $12,500,000 + 7.5% of the gross
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1(2011) - $12,500,000 + 7.5% of the gross
The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009) - $12,000,000
Twilight (2008) - $2,000,000
103
u/__M-E-O-W__ 29d ago
12.5 million AND 7.5% of the gross!? That's insane! According to Google, that would put him at about 150 million dollars total for the Twilight franchise.
17
u/Terrible-D 29d ago
I put Elijah Wood in this group too. After the Lord of The Rings he gets to do what he wants. It might not all be great, but the choices are always interesting.
39
u/PlanUnhappy 29d ago
He got paid 2mn for the first one? Sounds like a lot for a first major role. Also 7.5% of the gross is ridiculous.

If you're breaking down by season this conversation gets rough. Newsroom and game of thrones have very very very good seasons and thats just hbo

u/tommytraddles 29d ago
All four of those came out between November 1, 2013 and November 5, 2014.
Just over one calendar year. Bonkers.
7
u/TheGoldenPig 29d ago
I disagree. Twilight gave him a lot of spotlight, so it’s more like main quest but like chapter 1 or 2.

To me Twilight is like Hollywood sizing him up. And it turns out he's much more than they're prepared for.

It's working
28
u/Pinksamuraiiiii 29d ago
Right! He’s a very versatile actor. I’ll never just tie him down to twilight. When I saw the movie Water for elephants, I already knew that he had a star quality.

This might be a controversial take, but I honestly think Robert Pattinson is this generation's Marlon Brando. An amazing transformation on screen, an eccentric public persona, a sex symbol of sorts (he's not even my type, but I can see it). And like Brando, I predict he's only going to get better with age. I barely even remember he was in Twilight at this point, his other work has been that exciting lately.

At first glance, to me, more like the Leonardo shenanigans. He was the titanic guy fo so long despite having a wide range of acting.

I've been rinsing his films of late, fast becoming one of my favourite actors of all time. His role in Rover was absolutely mint, one of his best roles, even if the film itself is pretty mid
1
u/Chubuwee 27d ago
His voice work on the boy and the heron was amazing. Mark hamil levels of voice talent

u/kzlife76 29d ago
I like Robert Pattinson. I haven't watched any of his early work, but I hear he shines.
25
u/tony_boloanie 29d ago
I saw the first twilight and none after. I don’t care. Dude is in bangers and he’s killing it.
11
u/butchforgetshit2 29d ago
I was very reluctant to watch the batman, because i didnt think he could pull it off. Im a comic collector and Batman is one ive been collecting for a long time, with issues going back to the mid 50s. I just didnt think he coukd do it, but my grandson convinced me to watch it with him and i was blown away by his ability to do the role. That motivated me to check out his other movies and i went from disregarding him to him being in my top 10 favorite actors. He csn do it all, and RP disappears, taking on whatever character hes playing completely. I thunk he will eventually be looked at in the same regards as Daniel D. LEWIS
5
u/ANTS_IN_MY_EYES_J 29d ago
Pattinson hated was very vocal about his hatred of the twilight series during its filming.
A few scenes you can see him trying desperately not to laugh

u/Tossmeasidedaddy 29d ago
Same as Ryan Gosling. I know he got famous for the notebook, but his other movies are fucking decent.
1
u/cbrown146 29d ago
Yeah, he's not just twilight. Blink and you'll miss him in Harry Potter. I think his death is still one of the top tragic ones.

The first time the band starts playing in that scene is the end of the yearly rewatches for me. Since becoming a mom I simply can’t.
13
u/Hironoveau 29d ago
I apologized for hating him because of Twilight (I still don’t like this movie), but now I like him. I started noticing his great acting in The King (2019). From there, I started loving his newer movies.
12
u/LexFrenchy 29d ago
At least he's capable of doing something else, unlike the people that can't stop associating an actor with one role he played 20 years ago.

What is the actual story here? Why does a vampire sparkle in the sunshine instead of burning to ashes? I tried to watch the first movie, but it was so bad that I shut it off pretty quickly. So I don't know anything about the sparkling other than the fact that it happens.

I hate his face. But it made him an excellent sniveling smarmy cowardice villain in that epic that every had to go see in 70mm or some shit.
4
u/zo_youngin4 29d ago
Honestly I don’t think people really care all that much for that movie franchise except for the people who actually still read the books and still watch the movies
4
u/Feekal_U4ria 28d ago
Robo is turning into another Gary Oldman and trying his hand (successfully) at a bit of everything. Kudos
7
u/pfhorr 29d ago
I think that character impacted him so much That he's spending the rest of his career trying to find a weirder one to play... A true deconstruction of art
6
u/Illcmys3lf0ut 29d ago
I think the guy is just a product of the time, a genuinely weird person, and a very gifted actor. He's great in Batman, ngl.

u/SkellyboneZ 29d ago
The people that still obsess over Twilight and the memes that spawned with it have either never matured past high school or have but never accomplished anything else in life and need something to make themselves feel better.

u/M3chanist 29d ago
Never Forget The Cheesiest Vampire Movie Ever!!!
2
u/AJYURH 29d ago
Yeah he really impressed me in pretty much every performance outside of twilight, and I was ready to hate him too because in twilight his performance was abysmal.
I guess putting talent in shit isn't enough to fix shit huh?
But yes, every time I see him I get surprised. Dude got range
3
u/Cheerful2_Dogman210x 29d ago
It's a amazing how he's grown as an actor. Who could have expected it.

I watched him in that Bong Joon-ho movie. I got more respect for him as an actor, now

2
u/The-Young-Lion 29d ago
Because they starred together in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire?
1
u/error_104_not_found 29d ago
Both have gone to great lengthz to shed their franchise imagez, wantedly choosing challenging, unconventional rolez. 😉 Swiss Army Man, Jungle, Guns Akimbo etc.
2
u/Raiding_plauges 23d ago
What’s crazy is that it’s for completely opposite reasons. Radcliffe was set for life after Harry Potter, so he could do whatever project sounds fun to him. Pattinson is building up his reputation as an actor by carefully choosing projects that are likely to succeed and can help show off his talent. That’s why Radcliffe is so often in random films that you’d never expect him to take, while Pattinson is always in huge blockbusters.

All I needed to see was cosmopolis back the day and hes been my favorite ever since
2

He was fantastic in Prinetime. It isn’t an over the top performance but it’s powerful in how his character quietly becomes unglued as the film reaches its crescendo.

He is literally as big as he is right now because he was in Twilight. We all saw him there.

Hes very quickly become one of my top favorite actors since around covid times. The movies he's in are peak, and his performances are varied and of top quality. He's a phenomenal actor.
If anyone hasn't seen one of his lesser known movies called Good Time, I highly recommend it. Directed by the Safdie brothers, and one of the Safdies acts in it alongside Robert.
2
u/Smufin_Awesome 28d ago
Lies. Edward's been alive so long, these are all juat prequels to twilight. The universe revolves full circle, like in Futurama. It's just 10 feet lower.
2
u/Fat_eyes_Washington 29d ago
Great actor with great range and likes what he does for a living, and who also has a great agent that lines him up with roles he absolutely destroys. If you haven't watched Good Time then do yourself a favour a set aside some time to watch it.
2
u/Dry_Yogurtcloset_213 29d ago
I am just going to say it. Twilight wasn't half as bad as people make it out to be. Re-watched it with the wife recently. There was only 1 movie that i disliked. The only other bad part is that they never actually finished.
2
u/aley2794 28d ago
I think the worst part about Twilight is how it cannibalized the vampire and werewolf genres. Before it, we had Blade, vampire horror stories, Underworld, and Van Helsing. But thanks to the success of Twilight (and vampire diaries), vampirism became synonymous with young-women romance, don't get me wrong, this theme existed before these movies, but afterward, there was no coming back
1
u/Hot-Difficulty-6824 28d ago
Eh I watched parts of the movies with my fiancée recently, and everything from the acting to the special effects were trash. Only the story wasn't but how can you make it interesting with such bad acting

How you get there isn’t important, I’m glad we get to see a great actor. Heath Ledger wasn’t much more than a pretty boy before the dark knight and I’m glad we got that at least.
Hell it worked for ringing Starr, a voice over actor doing children’s train stories before becoming the drummer of the Beatles /s
1
u/Comfortable-Sun-8927 29d ago
Honestly at this point, id go back and watch twilight BECAUSE he was in it . And lets be honest Kristin Stewart killed it in underwater and would be an awesome Ashley Ripley.

Can't wait for the "Bro's <doing a thing>" trend to die. Here's a few alternatives:
- Pattinson's on a generational run
- Robert Pattinson's on a generational run
- <something original>'s on a generational run

I think he did Twilight purely to make money, so he could later afford to pursue roles that appealed to him artistically rather than having to take roles just for money. I will die on this hill. Fight me.

I dont forget he was in twilight, but I do forgive him. He's done some GREAT roles since and has also said he didnt like making them. I bet being set for life from those movies have afforded him the freedom to do whatever roles he wants, like Daniel Radcliffe after hardy Potter... dude literally played a dead body Swiss army knife lol

Halfway through Mickey17 I realised that he's the twilight guy. Honestly he got some range and talent. Feels like twilight damaged his reputation more than it helped
1
u/procrastinator420420 29d ago
He made Twilight so he could be free to do these movies non-stop afterwards. For actors its often "one for you, one for them". So one good movie, then one cash grab. After Twilight he had the money and the game to do it all for himself.
