Hey so everyone who asked for a DM when this is released, I'll definitely message you all but it'll probably be a few weeks. Great motivation to have all this interest, thanks so much. ❤️

The depth effect looks really good, does that work because the view/camera is in a relatively stable position above? I would imagine that the illusion breaks if your observer looks from the side.

Yep if your position changes it breaks the illusion. Relies on two factors to work - people tend to keep their head still when using their phone, and the most likely orientation on launch is flat along the view direction. That becomes the frame of reference for the rotation. Holds up ok for short periods. Obviously eye tracking would work a lot better but nobody wants background apps using their camera.

Someone should make a home screen like this

Make a game where your job is to sink a ship but not shake the phone too much!

That would be cool! I actually haven't tried combining rigid body physics with the fluid sim yet, not entirely sure it'll work fast enough, or at all. 😬

Can you share an APK?

Don't want to self promote plus this design isn't in the app yet, hopefully soon. Just got it working today. Let me know if you want a DM when this one gets added

Blender?

u/nathan82 18d ago

Android 😊

Um, actually, it's only an android if it's modeled after a male human. If it's modeled after a particular kitchen appliance, it's a blendroid.

That's a cellphone

u/AemondsEye 18d ago

But will it blend?

Let's find out! Here at the Jory Caron Laboratory, safety is our number one concern. And that's why we hide behind this big tinfoil shield. It's to protect our nuts, because nobody likes roasted nuts!

Which liquid solver does this use?

u/nathan82 18d ago

A variation of FLIP optimised for mobile GPU compute.

Does it use motion sensors? gyroscope?

2

u/nathan82 14d ago

Yes, gyroscope and accelerometer

Remember the iPhone app that used the accelerometer to make it look like you were drinking a beer? Simpler times. I feel old.

Remember the stapler app? Where you'd tap the screen and it'd make a stapler sound and would keep a score of how many times you stapled?

Man, I kind of miss useless apps like that. They were a fun novelty.

I had the first gen iPod touch and this was like one of the only apps I thought was cool at the time 😂 how times have changed!

Wasn't that like the most downloaded app of all time?

What's the mathematical method behind it ? How physically correct ?

4

u/nathan82 18d ago

It's a grid holding mass and momentum (that's the sim's "resolution"), and particles holding position only (particle count affects surface quality mainly).

It's fairly correct, the main issue is fluid "stiffness". Water is effectively incompressible at normal atmospheric pressure, but you need a lot of sim steps to take the bounce out, because it's always overshooting otherwise. So that's why it looks kinda loose. Basically the sim does as many steps as it can fit in the frame budget, so it'll sacrifice accuracy to keep up the sim speed.

Great work thank you !

I’m looking forward to iBeer2. But actually that’s so sick

now use the camera and a warping effect for the background, recolor the fluid to yellow, and you've got an advanced beer drinking app lol

This reminds me of early day iPod touch apps🥲 those were some really cool creative times for apps
