[ANNOUNCEMENT] A polite note from the moderation team
The mods are trying to take a laissez-faire approach to moderation. However, since we've been attracting a larger audience and people have been asking about it, we wanted to give a more rigorous definition for the sub:
As a general rule, we're defining "silver crowns" as the largest denomination silver issue of a country/sovereign authority.
We're targeting 36-43 mm in diameter, 20-37 grams, large denomination silver coins.
At least 0.500 purity.
Examples are British crowns, Meiji silver yen, French/Belgian 5 francs, etc.
Preference for circulation or circulating commemoratives.
The mods reserve the right to approve any posts that we deem cool and fit the general theme of the sub (large silver circulation issues), even if they don't necessarily fit the above definition.
Examples of exceptions we'll make include Soviet and Imperial Russian rubles, British Indian rupees, Ottoman 100 para, one thaler from German states where two talers exist, select exonumia, etc.
This isn't a generic silver stacking sub, there are already lots of those.
If you're going to post a dump of a larger collection, there must be majority of silver crowns or feature them most prominently.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

France 5 Francs 1870
The new portrait of Napoleon III was presented in 1861. The face is more mature and the Emperor sports an elegant wreath. However, there was still little need for the crown so the mintages from 1861 to 1866 are minute - between 15 and 70 thousand yearly. The production picked up in 1867 and within four years almost 50 million were struck.
This is the final issue of the Paris mint. In July 1870 Napoleon declared war on Prussia which defeated him and captured within weeks. In September the French mints started digging in their archives for republican coins again.

Viva la Revolution! 🇲🇽
Miguel Hildalgo was a Spanish priest widely considered the father of Mexican independence and most famous for his Cry of Dolores speech where he first tried to organize masses in what is now Mexico City to fight against oppressive Spanish rule.
These are a pair of 5 Pesos honoring the man. The 1952 is in slightly worse shape, but the 1953 honoring his birth is a stunner! It is great to have the pair!

1966 Bhutan 3 Rupees
Amidst the election mailer trash today, I had this arrive. I already have the 4 coin cupro-nickel proof set in a nice velvet box. This is one of the "Certain Number" (2000 according to Numista: https://en.numista.com/109258) of sterling silver proofs.
As shown in the little flyer that came with the boxed proof set, this is a 1966 Bhutan 3 Rupees, .925 fine silver, crown size and weight. It’s a proof commemorative of the 40th anniversary of an important kings accession to the throne and shows him in the Raven Crown on the obverse. The reverse shows a thunderbolt symbol over top of a Buddhist eight spoked wheel of life symbolizing the perfect unity of the temporal and spiritual. As a heavily Buddhist country, it’s very unsurprising. Still it’s quite beautifully rendered.

1794 GA Republic of Ragusa 2 Ducati
In the late 1700s, the Republic of Ragusa maintained strict geopolitical neutrality, briefly benefiting from a maritime trade boom during European conflicts by carrying goods under a neutral flag.
However, this period of economic revival came to an end in 1806 when Napoleonic troops occupied the city-state, leading to the official abolition of its centuries-old independence shortly after.
This silver piece mimics the famous Maria Theresa Thaler obverse, hinting this coin was intended to be a trade piece similar to the MTT and other city states such as Venice.

France 5 Francs 1856
In December 1852, President Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte became the third Emperor of the French. Most new coins with his portrait appeared in 1853 but the demand for 5 Francs crowns probably was not very big as the first imperial piece appeared only in 1854 in a remarkably small mintage. The production picked up in 1855 and 1856 to exceed 4 million in the former and 9 million in the latter, and then fell down to 3 thousand in 1859 when the design was retired.

France 5 Francs 1852
The Republic needed a president and pretty quickly the French elected Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte. He was the first French president to win general elections. It is quite probable that many voters were certain they voted for his late uncle, Emperor Napoleon I. Louis- Napoleon had tried to overthrow Louis Philippe I twice, now he just used the opportunity.
The presidency was limited to one term only but our Napoleon was not ready to step down so soon. Perhaps one of the early steps in asserting his position was to put his own profile on the coins.
This type was issued only once in 1852 as in December that year it became obsolete.

First ecu obtained. Isn’t she a beauty?
And for £90 I’m not complaining. I’m blown away by its size. A larger diameter than even my cartwheel twopence and BOE dollar, well larger than my regular British crowns. Can’t wait to get more. Early modern crowns are the best.

France 5 Francs 1851
And the winner was... Eugène-André Oudiné! His Ceres appeared on full range on the new coins of the Republic.
Unfortunately, the Republic was not meant to last long and Ceres was retired as early as in 1851. This is the final issue from the Paris mint. Sadly, another of my pieces which reacted too strongly to PVC 😢

Got my first (restrike) Maria Theresa thaler—and first thaler in general!
My first post in this subreddit and super stoked to have bought this at my LCS for just a buck over melt! Is there absolutely any way to tell when a particular restrike was minted?
Collecting crowns is so addicting 🪙👑
