I’ve been questioning myself a lot lately, and I honestly don’t know where else to turn, so I’m hoping someone here might be able to help me understand what I’m going through.
I’ve been Shia my entire life, but I’ll be honest: I was never particularly well-informed about my own faith. It’s only been a few months that I’ve started seriously studying Shiism and learning more about the caliphate, Imam Ali (AS), and why we believe he was on Haq. I’m still learning, and I know I have a long way to go.
I’ve always deeply loved the Ahlul Bayt (AS), particularly Imam Ali (AS) and Bibi Fatima (SA). I haven’t studied the lives of the other members of the Ahlul Bayt as much yet, but I hope to learn more about them as I continue my journey.
Here’s where I’m struggling.
I’ve always considered myself a spiritual person. Not necessarily someone who has always been consistent with religious practice, but someone who has always believed in Allah and had a fear of Him. However, lately, I’ve been questioning my relationship with Allah in a way that genuinely scares me.
I want to love Allah for who He is, not simply because I want something from Him or because I’m afraid of His punishment.
I don’t want my relationship with Him to revolve around rewards and punishments. I want to worship Him because I love Him. I want to pray because I want to be close to Him, not because I’m afraid of what might happen if I don’t. I want my faith to come from genuine love rather than fear or obligation.
I know that Allah has told us about Himself through the Quran, but I find it easier to emotionally connect with the Ahlul Bayt because they were human beings. I can learn about what Imam Ali (AS) and Bibi Fatima (SA) went through, their struggles, their patience, their suffering, and their devotion. Learning about their lives makes me love them even more because I can understand, to some extent, what they experienced.
With Allah, I sometimes struggle to understand how to develop that same kind of personal, emotional connection. I know He is not comparable to His creation, and I’m not trying to compare Him to the Ahlul Bayt. I just don’t know how to make my love for Him feel as real and personal as the love I feel for them.
I want to love Allah the way someone loves their beloved. As human beings, most of us have experienced love in some form, and I want my relationship with Allah to be rooted in that kind of sincere longing, closeness, and devotion. I want to turn towards Him naturally, because I love Him, rather than constantly calculating whether something is a sin, whether I’ll be punished, or whether I’ll be rewarded.
And I’m scared.
Sometimes I feel like I love the Ahlul Bayt more than I love Allah, and then I start worrying that I might be committing shirk without even realizing it. These thoughts have been consuming me, and I don’t know how to navigate them. I don’t want to offend Allah, and I certainly don’t want to stray from my faith. If anything, I want to become closer to Him.
I’m sharing this because I genuinely want help, not because I’m trying to challenge anyone’s beliefs or disrespect my religion. I’m still learning, and I want to approach these questions sincerely.
