Advice Need help finding work for my husband

Hello, I would like to start off by saying I’m not familiar with Reddit and how it works, so please forgive me if I’m an amateur at this. My husband was convicted earlier this month and is serving three years of probation and a minimum of 10 years on the registry. We are currently based out of Harnett County, North Carolina, where my husband held a job with a mom-and-pop company for almost a year. He was honest with them from the beginning that he had a legal battle going on, and they told him they didn’t care to know what his charges were for. When the much larger side of the business decided to hire him on, they knew that he had a legal battle going on. The smaller side of the business was aware of what his charges were, but never shared it with the bigger side of the company. My husband felt that it was only right that he tell his boss what was getting ready to happen. When he did, within a matter of 48 hours he was fired. Nobody will give him a reason, nor will they return his calls, and to our knowledge, they are not even answering other employers that are calling when he puts them down as a reference (which he is having to do because the only CDL experience he has is with them). My husband has now been without a job for a month and just recently was granted unemployment. I’m coming on here to ask if anybody knows of a company in our area/ state that will hire him. He’s a really good worker and he wants to work. He never missed a day of work with the mom-and-pop company he was working for because he was just so thankful that somebody gave him a chance. Now nobody is giving him a chance. He has his CDL, and his probation officer has said he can leave the county for work-related purposes only, but he does not want him leaving the state. Most local CDL gigs are not hiring him because of his conviction, and the only places interested are over the road, which he is prohibited from doing. He is open to any kind of work. The work he previously did for a year was as a logistics manager for a flooring and countertop company in our area. If anybody can help us out, that would be greatly appreciated. He has asked his probation officer for help, and his probation officer has not been able to give him any; the only thing he has told him is to keep applying. He has applied to everywhere you can think of and has been turned down. He is using unemployment sites for second-chance employers, but because of the charges, nobody’s willing to hire him. They all give him the runaround and tell him that it doesn’t disqualify him and that they will run it through their boss or HR, just to be ghosted or have an offer rescinded. If anybody can help, it would be appreciated. I’m trying to help take some of the burden off of him because I know how stressed he is. I would also like to add that we do not have the financial means for my husband to start his own business, nor do we have the credit we exhausted all of our funds and unfortunately ruined our credit in the process of hiring a good lawyer that got us a really good outcome compared to what it could have been, so self-employment is not an option for us at this time.

Not really important what I think, but personally don't think multiple years probation followed by a decade of registry is a really good outcome. Especially if the lawyer charged what equaled your life savings. That is the typical plea deal for csam without production or distribution.

Anyhow I would recommend self employment for both of you so you can get some finances back in your bank asap. You can start with running ads on Yelp for 200-300 a month.

In North Carolina, there are three degrees. First: Production, Second: Distribution and Duplication and Third: Possession.

Most, if not all, sexual exploitation charges fall under second due to the duplication. I've rarely seen third (not saying it doesn't happen though). This is likely the scenario that her husband encountered.

Also, in North Carolina, it's mandatory registration for these offenses. It's a 30 year deal but you can petition to be removed after 10 years.

Source: From NC and I too paid an arm and a leg for my attorney who got me 5 years of probation.

My husband’s attorney got 16 2nd degree charges down to two 3rd degree charges along with the probation and registry but the biggest thing was the judge signed an order allowing our son and his sister to still live in the same house as him because both my husband and sister in laws parents are deceased and since she is a minor he is her legal guardian. In our opinion he made a miracle happen!

The pay probably won't be as good but U-Haul hires drivers and does not mind people on the registry.

Food service, bartending, dishwashing, and serving are great options. Most local restaurants just want someone who is good at their job.

Really depends on the charge. If it involved minors, many restaurants have teenage dishwashers, hosts and bussers so they have to cover their asses. If his case got media coverage, it’s even harder because of someone in the community recognizing you and telling management.

Just my experience, but most restaurants don’t seem to background check. They just want a warm body that can work

Not a background check but often a google search. That alone for me caused many places to withdraw their offer. Definitely be up front about it and hope they’re willing to look past it.

IBEW 1912, local electrical union. Career change, CDL may even help get his foot on the door delivering material on-site.

I'm in Wake County. Do you have experience with IBEW 1912? I submitted an application but it looks like their apprentice training program isn't starting until next year.

I'll still keep an eye on it regardless. Just curious what others experience have been and if there's other outlets to get training sooner... especially with this conviction.

You should still be able to go in as an unindentured apprentice. Otherwise it’s worth the wait as you will rarely have an issue with your background. I would apply to other trades in the area as well. I do not have experience with 1912, but I have experience in that I know the Union trades will give you a chance to make an honest living. Go to work, don’t call in and try your best and you won’t have a problem.

A friend of mine has had jobs flagging for road construction and window cleaning both residential and commercial. Maybe check that type of thing out. Good luck!

A lot of jobs that don't require background checks are that in the food service industry l, like line cooks, dishwashers, related restaurant work. Being open with them from the get go will also be appreciated. It a ultimately comes down to the employer but being honest will say he is earnest. I used to be in the banking industry before my conviction. But I had to settle with a company that did. But care about my past but care for me as a human and as an employee. Start as a dishwasher and then work your way to prep and line. It is honest work. Lots of jobs that is driving intensive doesn't really out emphasis on background just ability, surprising they don't see pass his conviction.

Ooh. This is tough. I recommend finding other mom and pop places such as restaurants to find work. Some warehouse jobs may open up to which could lead to more. Avoid chains because they will flatly refuse you. Wish you the best of luck and please keep us updated

I found work at a truck repair shop test driving the vehicles and working in the parts department. Just an idea.

Contact the division of human rights. That’s a violation
Of his rights and discrimination against him. I pasted the link to division of human rights so just click it scroll to employment and fill it out. If you need more help DM me. I’m going to college for civil rights litigation and I’m finding registered people get (pardon my language) pooped on horrendously. It’s a modern day Salem witch hunt trials or the Rockefeller sex laws as we call it. Make sure he has proof of termination because soon as the DHR gets ahold of his employer they will panic and say he stopped commin into work. Happens a lot
