News Waymo expanding service areas in LA, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, Bay Area
From the blog:
Waymo is getting you to even more places. Over the next week, we’re scaling in five cities and adding nearly 250 square miles of territory across Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Want to hail a ride? Here are all the new places we’ll take you to:
- In LA we're extending down the coast to the South Bay, adding Torrance.
- People in Nashville can travel further south, like to the zoo.
- Over in Orlando, we’re nearly doubling our coverage area in the east, including enhanced service downtown.
- In San Diego, we’re headed north to La Jolla.
- For the San Francisco Bay Area, we’re getting you to more areas in the south, including a new BART connection at Berryessa Station.

Discussion Tesla Robotaxi Coverage in Houston
I wasn't expecting it to be this bad. How can they launch this? https://x.com/ethanmckanna/status/2115263351643111463?a=zbJM6xMbRBmuhwej4Uc&s=19
Also, how's the coverage/routing in Austin? Does it have weird detours and routes as well?

Discussion Does anyone have videos of people (not press) sitting in a Wayve in London?
About a month ago Wayve started testing in London, but I can't find any videos of regular people outside the press riding it. Can anyone link me to some?

News Tesla Cybercab Deep Dive: Inside the Engineering with Lars Moravy and Team
I'm not a fan of the Cybercab as a AV platform, but there is a lot of very innovative manufacturing going to it. I hope they bring a lot of it to the Model 3/Y like brake by wire and removing hydraulic braking completely. That is one less maintenance item to mess with.

News Rivian buys world model startup to accelerate self-driving ambitions
This is great for competitive landscape expansion. FSD is the ADAS king (in the US), but Teslas dumb games like trying to run out the clock on older hardware with “micro factory” promises have gone stale. Rivian would be a great alternative if they can pull this off with whatever help is prudent.

News Tesla to Launch Unsupervised FSD, Let Owners Join Robotaxi Network in Q2 2027
Q2 2027, really? Even if so, I'm guessing it will be limited to the same area the Cybercabs will be driving it.

News Tesla reports first Cybercab crash as Austin robotaxi wreck totals increase
According to its report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Tesla said its Cybercab was damaged when it drove at about 5 mph into a large pothole filled with water. The vehicle was occupied by a safety monitor but had no passengers. Lidar scanners, which Tesla robotaxis lack, have been used by other companies to detect such obstacles, scan their surroundings and observe road surfaces and potholes. Tesla robotaxis rely only on video.

News Mercedes announces launch date of its point to point driving system
So they have definitely not abandoned the internal system in favour of Wayve. It seems the Wayve negotiations started when NVIDIA was lagging peers but following the launch of Alpamayo, it now seems back on track. With Porsche and Audi launching next year, where it leaves BMW is the big question.

Discussion Tesla releases Robotaxi Safety report, discloses unsupervised mileage completed, 3.3M
Tesla released https://www.tesla.com/robotaxi/safety.
Obviously the safety is good (they wouldn't release it otherwise), but much more interesting I find is information on how quickly their miles driven is accelerating and how it compares to the competition.
Some interesting data:
In the week of September 14th, Tesla was logging on average 32,292mi/day. On the week of October 12th, they are now logging 79,671mi/day.
This means they are currently roughly at a rate of 2.39M miles/mo, about 29.5% more than the prior week or 117.4% more than 4 weeks ago.
For comparison, Waymo is currently at a rate of 16.72mi/mo as of Q2, which places Tesla at about 14% of Waymo for the most recent week, or 9.8% for the past 30 days.
In the most recent week, Austin accounted for 437,800 miles, or 78.5%. Dallas is second, at 17.0%.
Notably: Tesla excludes miles with an onboard safety monitor and includes remote-assisted operations within its reporting scope.
