Road rage driver spared jail after leaving cyclist with brain injury

This is the moment a thug motorist left a cyclist with a serious brain injury.

Joseph Hedley today avoided a jail sentence after the incident at the Cowgate in Edinburgh in 2024.

Hedley grabbed victim Iain Brown by the throat and violently threw him to the ground when the pair clashed.

Hedley, 39, and his partner then got back into his car and fled the area leaving the stricken cyclist lying unconscious in the middle of the road.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court was told Mr Brown suffered a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain and was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment following the horror attack.

A lawyer said the attack took place after the cyclist had shouted abuse at the driver and his passengers and had shone a bicycle safety light into his car.

Mr Turner said a passenger in the vehicle had suffered a seizure leading to Hedley to leave his vehicle and confront Mr Brown.

Political Holyrood, Westminster, and Independence voting intention (Norstat, The Times, 20-23 Oct)

Post image
85 Upvotes

Apologies it's not a Ballot Box Scotland post. The full tables haven't been uploaded yet so can't update Wikipedia, so this is just taken from Twitter.

Changes in polling from last Norstat (15-18 Sep), change in seats from SP2026. I haven't seen a projection for the Westminster VI, but I would assume "mostly SNP"!

Party Constituency List Holyrood Seats (Nowcast Projection) Westminster
SNP 34% (-3) 28% (-3) 54 (-4) 32% (=)
LAB 18% (+2) 17% (+2) 20 (+3) 21% (+3)
GRN 7% (-2) 15% (+1) 18 (+3) 7% (-1)
CON 12% (-2) 13% (-1) 15 (+3) 13% (=)
REF 13% (=) 13% (-1) 12 (-5) 15% (=)
LD 9% (-1) 9% (-1) 10 (=) 6% (-3)

Should Scotland be an independent country?

Yes: 52% (=)

No: 48% (=)

Question Reminiscing about 80s primary school dinners. What was your favourite?

I was trying to remember all of the school dinners in primary school. I was telling my niece how good they were back in the day. They were all home made by the dinner ladies. We also got to make a lot of things in home economics. It's sad the kids don't get to experience this today.

Here are the ones I remember. I know there's more feel free to add to the list.

Beef olives, potatoes and peas

Meatloaf, mash and carrots

Pizza and chips

Pink custard and coconut jam cake

Caramel cake and custard

Pie, chips and beans

Fish and chips

Sponge cake with white icing and sprinkles

Lentil soup

Cheese flan, chips and beans

I'll be in Ullapool on my own from 23 Dec to 3 Jan to volunteer with a local charity.

Not sure they'll be other volunteers around that time and would love to spend some time exploring and sitting in the pubs if anyone wants to hang out!

I'm 32, live on a canalboat in London, love music and I love the sea so am very much looking forward to my visit :)

I made a short fiction film about Scotland's salmon poaching culture. Shot and made music for the entire thing myself with the help of my best man GUS (who shot a lot of the film himself and stars in it as the character: BOOTS). I'm proud of how it went and I hope you like it too

Dunbar info/ life/community?

Hello,

I move around a lot with my kids who have up to now been homeschooled but from next year I am going to be putting them in Y5 and Y6 primary school. We have lived in dubai, Ethiopia, Kenya, London. I have been looking around online for a nice town to move to in Scotland. I was raised in London, and I am now ready for slow life, no big cities and I love nature. I came across many little towns that seem amazing but I am currently now seriously considering Dunbar. I work from home, so don't need any work opportunities, but I would like a town where we dont stick out like a sore thumb and could be part of a community. Me and my kids are black and as a women with two kids, safety and comfort of my kids is top priority. I know some people may recommend moving to the bigger cities (Edinburgh, Glasgow) but considering what was happening with the riots last year, and my dislike for big city life, I just feel like it will be like living in parts of London, just without knowing where the danger lurks. I think smaller towns will be relatively safer and even if people are not use to different looking people, I feel like it is a lot less likely to escalate or turn into random violence, or push kids into traffic and all the other things people have been reporting.

So, my good people, would you recommend Dunbar to a black women and 2 kids (8 and 10yrs), for a quiet, uneventful peaceful life? if not, is there anywhere else you think would be better for us?

We are going to travel around before buying a home anyway, but I wanted to make a short list of places to checkout.

Would love to hear the experience of any POC living in the smaller towns if they come across this post.

There were 1,152 alcohol-specific deaths registered in Scotland in 2025, according to the latest statistics published by National Records of Scotland.

This is a decrease of 3% (33 deaths) compared with 2024 and the lowest number registered in any year from 2020 onwards.

These statistics provide information about the people who died from causes which are wholly attributed to alcohol. These figures also provide data on areas across Scotland and comparisons within the UK.

A Visit to Stirling's Beheading Stone

Post image
193 Upvotes

The stone stands atop "Mote Hill" or the more appropriately named "The Heading Hill," a spot where an ancient Pictish Fort once stood. Over time, this area became the place where King James I would have his enemies dispatched. Beheadings were specifically reserved for individuals found guilty of committing treason. Most notably was that of Murdoch, Duke of Albany in 1425, the grandson of King Robert II, founder of the Stewart Dynasty.

Discussion Where will the student place to be on Halloween be?

Thought I (21,M, Paisley uni student) had it all wrapped up until my pal dropped out literally tonight haha. I stay about an hour by train away from Glasgow so while I'm scrambling for a hotel (in Glasgow, of course. The nearest towns are Largs or Greenock which are... different from each other but piss for a student night out) where are the places to be that don't require tickets.

I'd have said hive but not friendly enough with any students to invite myself along haha.
