Nominate Your Contributions For Flair Recognition (New Flair System)!

My flair system having won the community poll, this post marks the beginning of it's implementation. Along with this system we have added a regular level flair template so you may include how many years of experience you have with the language, as per u/srkris' idea.

The specifics of the new flair system are included below.

How To Gain A Special Flair

If a moderator scrolling through r/sanskrit randomly sees a post or comment and deems it worthy, then they will grant the author the appropriate flair.

However, if a post is too old to be visible or you would like to nominate a comment or post directly (whether they be yours or another person's), then you would post the nomination as a comment onto this post.

To earn a special flair, your contribution must show an in depth and familiar grasp of the relevant knowledge. It is, ideally, not a just a passing correction or tidbit, but something that goes deeper into the subject such that it greatly increases the knowledge and understanding of others.

The final decision on whether or not a contribution deserves a special flair lies with mod team.

The Flairs

The flairs are thus; all Sanskrit words are in प्रातिपदिकरूपम् and are to be changed based on the each receiver's preferred gender:

वैयाकरण/Grammarian - for people who show exceptional skill in the technical grammar of the language, including but not limited to Pāṇini's sūtrāṇi.

शैक्ष्य/Phonetician - for people who have exceptional knowledge of the phonetics and phonotactics of the language.

रचयितृ/Composer - for people who have exceptional skill in writing poëtry and prose, especially those with a good understanding of syntax.

नैरुक्त/Etymologist - for those who have an exceptional knowledge in the historical developments and etymologies of Indo-Aryan.

वेदिन्/Vedist - for those who have an exceptional knowledge of the Vedic forms of the language, specifically knowledgeable in reconstructions, accent, Vedic grammar, and/or Vedic vocabulary.

Format

The special flairs will all be yellow so as to distinguish them from the regular editable flair we already have. Compound flairs would formatted thus:

वेदिन्/Vedist | रचयितृ/Composer

संस्कृतोत्साहिन् | वैयाकरण/Grammarian

Other / अन्यत् shabdakalpadruma dictionary tabulation

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/18XDsnciLoXqhM4FECwvmSdQNK-KPtAFYX9r1MjRouUA/edit?usp=sharing

As you know, dictionaries शब्दकल्पद्रुमः and वाचस्पत्यम् offer traditional etymology (व्युत्पत्तिः, निरुक्तं, विग्रहवाक्यम् etc) for almost all words.

For fun I tabulated शब्दकल्पद्रुमः with the following columns:
शब्दः - headword (changed from प्रथमैकवचनं form to प्रातिपदिकं form)
लिङ्गम्
उपसर्गाः - also added कु here
धातुः - used औपदेशिकं form
प्रत्ययाः - कृृत्प्रत्ययाः mostly
... and so on.

Sorted by धातुः, उपसर्गः, प्रत्ययः, शब्दः in that priority, obviously you are free to make a copy and sort it differently.

I am not sure of a concrete use of it as such. The tabulation is not perfect either. Did it just for fun, though you might like it.

We NEED to Revive Brahmi script

• Upvotes

As everyone knows, the Brahmi script was used across India ~2000 years ago to write the Indic languages.

With respect to Sanskrit, as of now, we use the Devanagari script in official usage [teaching or writing the vedas, puranas, etc] as default.

The issue with this is, Sanskrit is a script-less langauge i.e. There is no dedicated script to write it. Different scripts were used across the eras and across the lands

[Japan still uses the Siddham script to write Skt Buddhist mantras] [Grantha was used in the Tamil/Malayalam speaking regions] [Telugu and Kannada scripts are used respectively in their areas] {Skt is written like this even today albeit unofficially}

Devanagari was born and is used mostly in the North. So, this makes using Devanagari as the default, highly regionally biased. It also means that Hindi & Marathi speakers can use their native script while the others have to learn a new script.

Hence, I feel that using Brahmi script is the best alternative since it was at one point used across the country making it less regionally biased.

Let me know your opinions...

Here is a Sanskrit Carnatic keerthana "vAtApi gaNapatiM" written by Mutthuswami Dikshitar:

{Written in the Brahmi script. Transliteration scheme: Kyoto-Harvard}

Here is the online Brahmi keyboard if you want to use it: https://www.lexilogos.com/keyboard/brahmi.htm

why "सर्व" has singular and dual form when it's inherently plural?

when we say "सर्व ", it reflects "every" so isn't it inherently plural? Am I missing something?

Made a video about the pronunciation of ऋ

Hey everyone,

Here's a video I made recently about the pronunciation of ऋ:

https://www.instagram.com/reel/DewY_GWMzGx/

I concluded that this (with perhaps the precise quality of the "surrounding vowels" being debatable) must be the "original" pronunciation based on my own research, most of which I conducted soon after putting up this post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/sanskrit/comments/18jz45j/further_discussion_regarding_the_pronunciation_of/

Relatively recently, there have been several posts here that added more textual support and allowed me to better flesh my views out. The two main such posts are:

  1. https://www.reddit.com/r/sanskrit/comments/1rqqlbr/confusion_regarding_pronunciation_of_maatra_of_%E0%A4%8B/

  2. https://www.reddit.com/r/sanskrit/comments/1veasi5/the_confusing_case_of_the_anusv%C4%81ra/ (check out the comments section)

I hope you find the video interesting! I'll try to answer any questions you might have, but it might take me some time to get around to doing so.

And, This is another announcement of the new updates rolled out in harinamamrta-vyakaranam.com. Here is everything else that has changed on the site, after the dictionary update, which was rolled out yesterday:

Home page and site: The home page is redesigned, with the same colours and fonts as before. We only added new sections inside the existing look. It contains interesting sections, like Varṇa-kramaḥ, which shows interactive division of varṇas, as per HNV. It contains verse of the day, and daily tithi calculator, daily subhasita for sanskrit learners, etc.

Scriptures: This took the most work. We have made this such, that this can be the ultimate reading site for all devotees and scholars, for all kinds of scriptures. The reader, is well optimized, will all set of options, for commentaries and features, to meet the needs of readers. You can switch the script between Devanagari, IAST, Bengali and Odia, and thus, can read in the script you wish to study.

  • The reader is built mobile-first, since most people will read on their phones. However, Desktop version is far better.
  • It is organized systematically, in ordered format. Also, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada had himself organized for sarvabhauma examinations, so, that curriculum of Gaudiya Vaishanivism is also included therein.

Practice: This section can be helpful for teaching gurukula childerns, or in general any students of Sanskrit to practice the topics easily, along with the developed reference mechanism of Harinamamrta Vyakaranam, in the website itself.

  • All seven prakaraṇas are open now: Saṁjñā & Sandhi, Nāma, Ākhyāta, Kāraka, Kṛdanta, Samāsa and Taddhita.
  • There are about 770 questions in total: 324 for Nāma, 117 for Saṁjñā & Sandhi, and 40 each for the other five.
  • Every answer shows the sūtra number it comes from. Nothing was made up.
  • Saṁjñā (sūtras 1–40) is kept separate from Sandhi (sūtras 41–86).
  • The Nāma section has 104 full declension tables, with 24 forms each.

Games: There are five new games, while we are continuously working on games section now to bring useful games for all learners.

  1. Rāma vs Rāvaṇa: a battle game with animated characters.
  2. Laṅkā Dash: a running game.
  3. Sandhi Forge: you join the two words yourself, and the game checks your sandhi.
  4. Nāma Grid: you fill in declension forms.
  5. Sūtra Sorter: you sort forms under the rule that makes them.

Now, what remains:
1. Tools Section: Tools section marks various tools, as coming soon. We will work on them. 2. Scriptures Section: We are working, to feed data to all the scriptures, so that this can become the complete vedic repository, coming down from the bonfide disciplic succession of Sri Gaudiya Vaishnavism...

Suggestions and feedbacks, will be highly appreaciated.
That was the reason of posting in this reddit community.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada...

I have some questions about the word स्वीकार

For some background, I was born and brought up in the US by Indian immigrant parents. I plan on writing an article about how I grew up rejecting my roots, but then began my journey to self-acceptance and embracing my heritage. I am thinking of a word to represent this theme. I came across the word स्वीकार, but I have a couple questions:

  1. Does the word actually properly represent the theme im discussing? I want a word that represents how I used to be ashamed and embarrassed of my roots, and actively avoided learning Hindi and visiting India for years because of it, but then started to learn the language and actually have interest in visiting india more often, as a way of accepting where my roots are, on my own terms instead of having it forced on me. I’m not looking for a casual Hindi word though. I want something more formal, poetic, philosophical, hence why I’m turning to Sanskrit.

  2. Suppose this is the correct word, what form would make sense? Ive seen स्वीकार , स्वीकार:, स्वीकारम. I’ve even seen स्वीकृति

Would anyone be interested in a webforum where use of languages other than Sanskrit is minimized?

I think r/Sanskrit is great and I think it's great that here we use English, Sanskrit, and sometimes other languages too. But I was thinking today that it would be nice if there were a social media forum where I would be forced to practice Sanskrit because the use of English was minimized. People could just post whatever, talk about whatever, like any social media, rather than it necessarily having to be stuff about Sanskrit, only we'd use Sanskrit as much as possible. Would there be interest in this?

Has anyone self studied Sanskrit? What resources are you using?

I have some knowledge of Pali and am really interested in getting started with Sanskrit. Are there other learners in USA or Canada who either enroll in a university program or do self studies? I need recommendations on textbook resources for English speakers. Thanks

How to write Anusvāra in IAST?

I learned that Anusvāra in Sanskrit has various forms unlike Hindi. IAST (International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration) thus has various forms to write it in Roman letters.

  • Anusvāra before a क-वर्ग letter is written as ṅ
  • Anusvāra before a च-वर्ग letter is written as ñ
  • Anusvāra before a ट-वर्ग letter is written as ṇ
  • Anusvāra before a त-वर्ग letter is written as n
  • Anusvāra before a प-वर्ग letter is written as m

I am confused how Anusvāra is written in IAST when it appears before other Devanāgarī letters (from य-ज्ञ). Is it ṁ for all of them?

I have seen many people write Sanskrit as Samskritam. Is it because of "ṁ" which can difficult for folks to write using normal keyboard? Nityānanda Miśrā pronounces it as Samskrita too.

Also, does Sanskrita have chandra-bindu (like we use in माँ)? I have never seen it in Sanskrit personally, only in Hindī.

I made a free Bhagavad Gita app for Android

Post image
15 Upvotes

Namaste everyone,

This is my first time posting here. My wife and I have built a Bhagavad Gita app called Updesh. It has all 701 verses with their Sanskrit recitation, and a short story-style explanation of each verse in English and Hindi. My wife has a deep, self-taught love of Sanskrit and has helped me a great deal with it.

Andriod app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.updesh.android

https://linktr.ee/updesh_daily_gita

What's in it (Android):

- Every one of the 701 verses has a short story-style explanation, so you understand what is happening around it, not just what it says. For example, in verse 1.1 Dhritarashtra calls his own sons māmakāḥ, "mine", while the others are only "the sons of Pandu". One way to hear it: the family is already divided in his speech.

- Narrated in English and Hindi. You can read each explanation or listen to it, and the sentence being spoken is highlighted as it plays.

- 13 languages for reading. English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Spanish, Portuguese and German.

-Every verse in the original Sanskrit with its recitation. Each word lights up as it is recited, so you can follow along even if you don't read Sanskrit fluently.

iOS app will have the latest updates available on Android this week.

Thank you, and if you have any comments please do share.

🙏

Best Raghuvamsa Publisher?

Like this, I want. I am not able to find any publisher who has similarly like this. I even saw some publishers who had Alankara mentioned along with it. If that is also added, that would be good, but at least the bare minimum would be best. I'm not able to find a similar physical book.

Old book

Sorry about my english in advance, The thing is that the first time when I tried to read and understand with the help of a guru, something happened to me at the same night, first problem is you need a proper translator and who can explain the meaning of that, anyway the same night after reading couple of pages, around 3:30 am in the morning, someone or something kicked me and knocked me out from the bed, I am not a light person, nearly 300 pounds, I got scared and turn on the lights, woke up my parents but no one was in the house, nothing on the cameras too, and when I figured out where that kick or push came from or the direction, it came from the same direction where I put my book, next day I went to the guru and talked about it, he said there could be two things, either you are not ready for that kind of knowledge or someone was waking you up to read it. Maybe you guys or whoever try to read it, may not experience the same thing. Can i send you the pdf for research?
