Managed to find a replay for last week's game in the NWSL Zone on Roku... but no such luck this week (at least not so far).
Anybody find a replay anywhere?

Gia Corley and Trinity Byars helped San Diego take a second-half lead, but Boston rallied to earn a draw as the Wave set a new club record for goals scored in a regular season.

OK. OK. OK. I'll get there, but wanted to start out on a few high points before getting into the rougher feelings coming out of the stadium tonight.
1.) Calmate, calmate. Would we have locked in the #2 spot with a win, yes. But thankfully tonight's draw didn't cost us too much if we take care of business next week. I'll cover it more in my updated Playoff post, but the only two scenarios it knocked out was us passing Gotham if they drew next week and us keeping WAS from passing us if we lose next week. We still leapfrog Gotham with a win and them losing (tiebreakers ensure we pass them) and still lock in the 2 spot with a win or draw. We just gotta take care of business next week and one half of the bracket will go through the snap.
2.) We OWNED the midfield for the first 60' and was great to see them just control every attack and time and time again put BOS on their back foot. Do I wish we had gotten 1 or 2 goals in the 1st half? Yes. Do I think we deserved 1 or 2 goals in the first? Yes. Was it just pretty to see the combination work in the first 15' of the second half result in 2 goals back to back? Hell yeah it did. Just great control from Dali and Ascanio just keeping things humming and locking in our control.
3.) B&B(&G) GOAL FACTORY BABY! The run is continuing and I know she is listed as our left MF, but Corley primarily playing the left forward position has just turned on the jets for our offense. Her constant hustle work breathing down the necks of our opponents has to be so unnerving on one side, while Barcenas' footwork is just gotta be a bit of a mind-mess for the defense while Byars stays steady, just loping through the middle until she surges for strikes at key moments. All three of them were just having some fun out there (when they weren't getting hacked....more on this in a bit) and Barcenas' slotting it to Corley on the left for her to then finish through the defender and under the GK to hit the inside post for the first goal....beautiful. Barcenas then dribbling away from the defender in her normal spot to then cycle the ball to the outside right and around to Dali for a beautiful center to a streaking Byars touch....love it. This group just works so well together it is nothing but encouraging, even on a draw.
4.) But I will say it was a tale of 2 halves for Barcenas. In the first half, it became clear Boston had trained to focus on denying her the spot just outside the box on the right that she loves or when they can't get to her, just block her shooting lanes, even at the cost of leaving others open. They rightfully feared MelB's shot, but also wanted to get her frustrated and just keep shooting. And by the end of the first half, it had worked pretty well. Don't get me wrong, you gotta let shooters shoot and I was fine with MelB calling hre own number and letting them rip. Abad bounce or glance of the defense and that is in the back of the net. But then her adjustments were perfect in the second half. I'm not sure if it was her or the coaching staff that helped make it, but she still attacked her spot regularly and occasionally let it fly, but more often she played her dribble and sucked a couple of defenders to her as she just made them look silly trying to get the ball, leaving others open to move the ball around her. She had multiple times where she looked stuffed only to take her quick touches and end up slotting it to another player in a nice attacking position that opened up opportunities in the second half. And that one woman show deep in the box late int he game....so sweet and mean at the same time...
Now we shift to the not so great things that happened:
5.) I truly struggle to decide, are Boston that dirty of players or is this the ref's fault entirely? Boston has always been a physical team this season and look to disrupt the fluidity of the game and use physicality to take control and leverage their size on attack. No fault there. But there is physical and then there is dirty. Running through our players multiple times with no intent of playing the ball, dirty. Constant elbows to the back on every missed header after the ball was hit, dirty. Shoving our player to the ground clear as day after the play is called dead, dirty. But here's the other thing, if the ref doesn't ever call it or calls it but never gives a yellow card, why would you stop doing it? This was something that drove me insane when I coached my daughters rec team, is if the ref doesn't teach the players (in this case kids) that something is a foul, why would they ever change how they are playing? There was a point where one player had back to back late hits in 15 seconds of play taking our player out twice (after 30' minutes of chip checks and body blocks), and while both were called, you can't not give a yellow card as a ref to that, especially with how physical it was up to that point. You need to keep it in check or else what happened during extra time is a best case scenario. That was truly embarrassing what Boston did (refusing to play the ball to the sideline for a called throw in, then passing it around like a game of keep away with Bonansea having to swat the ball out of the keepers hands to try and get play back going) but that was inevitable because they didn't respect the ref AT ALL and NOR SHOULD THEY! I'm knocking on every bit of wood I have to say I'm just glad that we walked away from this game without a major injury (although I still hope Gia and MIMI are doing alright) but that shouldn't be a consideration if the game was actually refed well. I'm not saying call everything (we saw that two years ago in the SEA game with 35 fouls, 8 yellows, and 2 reds), but you can let the play be physical while still keeping it from getting dangerous for the players. This ref (looking at you Matthew Corrigan) failed entirely.
6.) Our bench is starting to worry me a little, especially in the Midfield. I think we do have solid option in Forward positions (Ludmila and Bonansea) and our DEF (Looking at you Courtnall), but right now our Midfield 2nd wave tends to kill our momentum. I am assuming some of this is to save legs for the playoffs and not risk injury on a regular season game when we are locked in to top 4 (and top 2 most likely), however when we lose Dali, Ascanio, and Godfrey, the ball just dies in the MF. Harbert and Fazer can both hold there own without question, but when we need a goal, our only real play is to go direct from DEF to FOR and skip the MF. That is not our best play as we do not have the service legs in the back to do it. McNabb gives it a hell of an effort, but it is one thing to send it to a waiting Forward (with a DEF on her back) and another to send it over the DEF to catch a breaking Byars or Ludmila. We can do it from the midfield, we just need someone there to help marshal it. I think either Fazer or Harbert can do it when paired with some of the starters, but when we do a full swap, it just hasn't had the chance to gel as well as we need it to at this point. Like I said, may only be a regular season issue as we are saving legs, but I'm hoping that is the case...
7.) Last item and leaving it on a high note: LET'S GO SNAP!!! I'm still waiting on the final attendance numbers, but San Diego SHOWED OUT tonight and had the place going at key points in the game. If Byars had scored on that cross from Morroni, the metaphorical roof would have exploded off the stadium. I hope we see all of this in two week when we host the QF and was a blast to be a part of. LFGSDWFC!!!!

I know I posted about this earlier in my thoughts, but I did a little side project this week to check myself on if the feeling I had was real. In my mind, San Diego has played extremely well against top teams, but has stumbled against lower ranked teams, what could be referred to "playing to the level of our competition". And I wanted to check that out, so I ran the records of every team against each other and tabled it out.
How to read the table is every row represents each team in order of the current standing, and then going across the row Green means they have a wining record vs. the team in the column header, Yellow means they are .500, Red means losing record. You start seeing some interesting patterns like with WAS, they have struggled a bit vs top teams (red to #2 and #5) but have thrived against all others. Also Gotham also dominates lower competition, while staying even against the upper tier (DEN is their kryptonite), leading to both their low loss total, but also their high draw total (reminds me of days of Stoney).
And then we get to the Wave. LET"S GO!!! We have the best record (& points) vs. the Top 4 competition by a decent margin, vs. all current playoff teams (Top 8) also not all that close, and have the highest win total in the league with two matches to go. We look great against our matchups and love to see it!
That said some items do pop out: (1) We have lost both games this season against our current first round match up - SEA. (2) The losses to lower competition (HOU & BAY) could cost us the shield.
For SEA, it is important to give context to both as the first loss (2-0...oof) was during a time when we were still figuring out our attack after Dudinha was lost to SEI, this was Panos' first start and had issues working it out of the back (as shown in the goals being scored in first 20') because we were also missing Dali to injury in this game as well. For the second match, this was the MVZ red card game where we lost her at 13' and Courtnall got thrown in for the first time out of nowhere. Even with that, we controlled the ball (59% possession), out shot, and had better chances while their keeper had a dominant game to keep us off the board. I say, BRING THEM ON! The factors that hurt us in the first two matches have been ironed out and I would LOVE to exercise the demons, both for this season as well as them beating us (and dominating us) in the 2023 Semifinals that kept us from playing the championship at home. The Reign have our number historically, as we have only 1 win all time against them (1-8-2 W-L-D record) and let's get the record straight.
For the losses to lower competition, this is where it helps tell the story of this whole season and how proud we should be of what the team and staff have gone through in finding their current best in class formula:
From each of these situations, we emerged stronger and helped build who we are now:
All of this gave us reasons to experiment, shift, and adapt to a changing roster and NWSL landscape and they have done a great job doing so. I doubt our coaching staff or back office will get recognized by awards, but they should as they have put together not a team of superstars like Gotham, but of excellent players that know how to play together. If we can become the NWSL version of Barcelona and be the best "team" year in and year out for the NWSL, I'll take that. Love this team and let's do this!!!

LA and San Diego are in the running to host!
Could you imagine the Wave being able to play in the host city!

We Clinch:
Playoff spot: LOCKED! LFGSD!!!
Host playoff game: LOCKED AND READY TO ROCK THE SNAP!!!
Host playoff and semifinals: Win out or 1 L from WAS or 1 D from WAS (although this is tough as GD would probably push to WAS unless we blow out a win)
NWSL shield: Win out and 1 L from NYG or 1 D and better goal differential (likely go to us as tied currently so will be +1 at minimum)
Key Matchups:
10/25 - WAS at KC
10/25 - SD vs BOS
10/1 - SD at Bay
10/1 - NYG vs UT

Girlfriend and I opened a box of NWSL Donruss Optic the other day and only had one single Wave player but last night we opened packs of the Donruss flagship product and had a bunch of really fun hits including these two gorgeous cards. Nowhere else for me to really show off. Has me even more excited for the last home regular season game this weekend and the playoffs!

Crazy according to this chart wave attendance is down 10% from last year when the team is playing better
One thing wife and I have been doing is they’ll let you exchange up to 3 season ticket games for games later in the season
So we’ll exchange the ones we can’t attend and invite friends with the extra tickets. Doesn’t help with attendance but helps with exposure anyway
Some teams don’t let you do that type of exchange so it’s nice to have that option

Barcenas! Another absolute banger. She must practice those mid-range shots a ton with both feet. Her improvement has been tremendous. I’d love for Ascanio to do the same.
A short drought is over for Byars. One of the things I love about her is that she has different gears and runs just fast enough, which makes it hard to defend her. She ran past the defender and then got between the defender and the goal so that she didn’t need to rush. Ice cold composure.
Except for several holy sh-t moments, we played like champions. Luck was on our side too.
I’ve been impressed with Bonansea’s ability and willingness to do whatever the team needs in the moment, even getting dirty for defense.
Mimi made two awful errors and we paid for one. But everyone makes mistakes. My biggest problem tonight was her choosing to cross to Fazer, who has never scored, with 30 sec left in the game. We could have easily held the ball for the win, but her decision gave NC one more possession. I hope she gets coached.
Dali is an asset, I know, but she’s also a defensive liability. The way she retreats without closing the distance even though the back line is set behind her. This team has been very good at fixing tactical errors, and I’m surprised this has not been fixed.
This team’s grit. The will to win is peaking. Love it. The only exception is Fazer. The team needed her to run with her fresh legs and do the dirty work in the MF, but nope. I would not be surprised if her contract isn’t renewed.
I’ve been overall impressed with the bench’s choice and timing of substitutions lately, but I think they made a mistake today. They used up all the MF subs before subbing Corley even though we know Corley doesn’t last 90, so they had to put Courtnall in and send Moroni up. I don’t think this was planned??
Ok that’s too much negativity but hey, five in a row, for the second time this season!! I seriously think we are now the favorite to win the Shield given how NY looked today. Love this team. Go Wave!
