Read this before you post here

Welcome to r/SALEM, and thanks for your interest in posting here. Before you do, please be aware that — like many city/area-focused subreddits — we have some topics that come up very frequently. Sometimes that’s okay, and is an inevitable part of being a long-running community-focused forum, and sometimes it is super annoying and will lead to people down-voting your post because they’re tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.

If you’re about to post about any of the following, please first use the search function (right up in the upper right hand corner, if you’re viewing this on the web!) to see if something similar has been posted recently. If it has, please contribute to that thread rather than starting a new one.

Frequently posted things:

Did you hear that boom/firework/gunshot/weird noise?

This comes up a lot; frequently folks are concerned they may have heard gunshots and/or fireworks and are looking for reassurance. First, know that it probably was not a gun shot. There is a very good chance that it was fireworks, or somebody with an altered muffler, or, if you also noticed a power outage or blip at the same time, a transformer exploding. Second, if you’re actually seriously concerned about gunshots, you should probably be contacting the police, not Reddit. Third, if you live near a vineyard (and, if you live anywhere in the Salem area, you do!), you should be aware that vineyards use acoustic devices — basically massive noisemakers — to scare birds away from grape vines. This is especially frequent in the late fall, near harvest time.

OMG what is that smell?

Salem, and many surrounding areas, lie in the Willamette River Valley. Due to the topography of the area, we experience temperature inversions) with some regularity. An inversion occurs when a layer of warmer, more elevated air overlies a lower, cooler air layer. Effectively, this traps the air in the valley underneath the warmer layer, which means that smoke, vehicle exhaust, rotting vegetation smells, etc., cannot escape. That’s probably what you’re smelling.

Is there any good <insert cuisine here> in Salem? Where can I buy <thing> in Salem?

These types of threads come up fairly often. The restaurant scene in Salem is decent, but not exceptionally dynamic — places do not close all that often, and new places don’t open all that often either. If somebody has asked this question within the last couple months (again, use that search function!), the answers that they got are almost certainly still relevant.

Why is the train stopped or blowing its horn?

There are a number of freight lines that route trains through Salem. Occasionally, they will need to stop to onload or offload cars, which may result in a longer-than-usual wait time at a crossing. This is normal.

Sometimes, unfortunately, there are train-versus-pedestrian collisions. When those happen, the train will need to be stopped for an extended period of time to allow police to investigate the scene.

Finally, while many portions of Salem are zoned (and signed) as “no train horn” areas, it remains at the discretion of the train engineer as to whether or not to sound their horn, and some of them, well, tooting their horn just toots their horn.

What’s going on with all the cops?

We don’t have any way of knowing. You may be able to consult PulsePoint, but they only report on fire and EMS, not strictly police. You may also be able to find an online police radio scanner relay; those are typically time-delayed.

OMG what is going on with the low-flying helicopters?!

The Oregon Air National Guard has a helicopter squad that is based near the Salem Municipal Airport. They do routine training missions, which frequently involve lower-altitude flights, most often at night. The Salem police department does not have a helicopter, so any low-flying helicopter you’re hearing is almost certainly the Oregon Air National Guard. frequently. Sometimes that’s okay, and is an inevitable part of being a long-running community-focused forum, and sometimes it is super annoying and will lead to people downvoting your post because they’re tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.

Reminder: Emergency preparedness night this week! Wednesday at 6 pm. Baxter Hill Community Hall.

South Gateway Neighbors is hosting an information night on emergency preparedness and general safety. We'll be having Joe Hutchinson, Salem's emergency manager, give a presentation and answer your questions. This will be at 6 pm, October 28, at Baxter Hill Community Hall.

You don't need to live in South Gateway to attend! This information is important for everyone in Salem. We will try to have this on Zoom as well, though we encourage you to attend in person because we often have audio difficulties. As of now, we're planning to use our monthly meeting link, which can be found in our agenda, but this may be subject to change.

Parking at the hall is limited, so you will probably need to park in the church parking lot. We've had occasional confusion about which building is the right one due to some strangeness with the address number. The building says Baxter Hill Community Hall when viewed from the street. It is up some stairs from the church parking lot.

QUESTION Trailer and RV's in south salem

What's with all the RV's that keep stacking up in the back of the chefs store parking lot? Are they allowed to be there now or something? Could've sworn there was signs saying they'd get towed. The group just keeps getting bigger and bigger and they're almost all the way up to the front of the parking lot now. Right now they're blocking the drive path with one of their trucks. Full on perpendicular to the drive path and are just in the way with their big ass trailers. Lowkey annoying.

EVENT Pre-Halloween Party @ Westside Station (w/ Co$tume Conte$t)

Post image
7 Upvotes

For those brave enough to cross the river, Thursday night will be the ideal start to the Halloween weekend.

Also, wondering what this year's "Joker" (overdone costume) will be. Nikki from Obsession? A yellow box labeled "Backrooms"? Susan Dell?

I don't know how much the DJ vote counts for, but I am biased in favor of originality.

Dog agility

Hello community, I was wondering if there were any dog agility clubs or dog agility equipment in or around the city? I have a 10 month old puppy that needs to burn some energy and have a job. Thanks!

Looking for friends around my age

I made a post on here recently asking about where to find friends and saw that a lot of people here are also struggling with making friends. I thought it would be worth a shot seeing if anyone here would want to be my friend. I've tried making friends in person, but I haven't had much success.

I'm 21m and I live near salem. Some of my hobbies include hiking, going to the movies, video games, concerts, arts and crafts, and lots more. I'm mainly just looking for someone to hangout with regularly, and I'm open to trying just about anything together. If anyone else is struggling with this too, I hope to hear back from you❤️

Did it go out of business? No more sign and it looks like a bunch of the used cars are gone from the lot. I used to bring my car to Leroy there.

MISC Missing cat, West Salem

This cat came up to my partner and I during a walk in Wallace Marine Park, near the softball fields. It was left with the bag of food that you see pictured with it.

We will be taking her to the vet, cross posting to other social media sites for owners to claim her but if you know who she might belong to please feel free to PM me.

She appears to be a <6mo tortoiseshell cat and fixed. She was extremely friendly as well, so I assume was someone's pet beforehand.

MISC There’s some missionaries going around my apartment complex right now.

It’s 8pm. It’s also two females like teenage females. Very weird. They had name badges that gave LDS vibes and there were bikes in the middle of our complex but what church sends two young girls out and about at 8 pm on a school night? Very wierd.

EVENT Best bar to watch the World Series?

I want to watch game 4 at a bar tomorrow. I watched game 2 at Half Court, which was ok, but I don’t really like sports bars where there are a million TVs all showing different stuff. Does anyone know of a relatively mellow bar that will be showing the World Series and only the World Series?

I know you’re just trying to avoid the speed bump, but please stop driving in the middle of the road.

It’s amazing to me how many drivers will try to straddle the entire speed bump by driving in the middle of the street. Feels like that kind of behavior is also unsafe and illegal… but maybe that’s just me.

Anyway, please stop doing that.

LDS South Salem

Not really a point to this post other than ranting. I live within walking distance of the senior center, in a private (NOT fancy or anything lol) community. I'm assuming these are Latter Day Saints riding around on bicycles. We have big private property/no trespassing/no soliciting signs right by the office and yet these people apparently can't read/think that doesn't include them. I've been stopped numerous times (by the same women, even after telling them no thanks lol) and told they would love to see me at service if I'm interested. You can visit people here but that doesn't give you free reign to walk around and pester people in a PRIVATE community. I'm not at all religious and it is pretty annoying when they automatically assume everyone would be interested. Do they have a quota or something? 🤔

From Salem's residential bartender wannabe comes a spine tingling, blood curdling cocktail menu that will make you question the adjectives he just used. Come on in to be thrilled and chilled but please don't spill.

Also, big thanks to anyone who came for Simpsons Night and you have my heart forever if you got a cocktail there.

POLITICS Some drop box advise

Here's the Secretary of State's drop box locator. Please remember to vote!

Some advice from trying to do it this weekend:

  1. Reminder that the Marion County Clerk drop box is not open on the weekend
  2. I ended up going to Marion County Health, google maps lead me to the west entrance, but it's actually on the other side. I didn't see it before but there is a sign pointing to it from Center St.

Anyone go here regularly and know what rows are the best seats? Last time I went, the bottom of the screen was obscured by people's heads which was not ideal. I'm trying to get a better seat this time, Aud. 1 for reference. Would appreciate any help!

REQUEST Big Boom + Police Swarm?

Near the Willamette University campus, massive sky-brightening boom happened and a whole bunch of cop cars came in, lights were shut down, and supposedly there were people getting carried out on stretchers. Anyone have any info?
