Can I swing this garbage around safely?
Do you think I can swing this around without it breaking and shattering into a million pieces and flying into my carotid artery? I wish I could afford a sweet piece of steel but I can’t so this will give me a chance to swing something around as long as it’s safe I guess that’s the most important thing

I mean it’s a bar of carbon steel. It’s probably fine to swing around but it’s not winning any awards for style

It’s gonna look even worse once I’m done swinging it into everything so for me I think the price is right and the style is proportional. Thank you for helping me decide!

Depends on what you mean by "swinging it into everything". It's a sword. It's not an axe. It's not a crowbar. It's not a sledgehammer. Don't use it for things you would use those things for, and you're probably fine with UC.

But to counterpoint, its a $50 slab of metal. He can absolutely abuse it to do all of those things and have fun and nothing of value would be lost.

Oh, sure, and I'm not worried about keeping the $50 slab on metal in pristine condition. I'm much more worried about him snapping it and sending fragments of metal through the air/his flesh.

Why would you buy this instead of, say, a cheap munitions grade kukri?
Ghurka House has $50.00 models that were made to cut through the jungle

Personally I prefer the Cold Steel gladius machete, and I can attest that it'll take a beating

It will be machete quality, so yes. I have the cold steel one, quite good for what it is.
I'm surprised to see 1060 from United Cutlery. Their while M48 line is cheap stainless. Like the war hammer that is proudly advertised as cast stainless lol
But then, they have a lot of sub brands. Looks like this whole Combat Commander line is 1065. Bottom shelf premium 👍

Modern and cheap doesn't always mean garbage, and United Cutlery sometimes has some budget gems. For $50 I'd give it a go

I own their version of the spartan sword from 300 and while heavy it can take some punishment.

You can swing it around and hit things but just keep in mind swords get wear and tear and break and if you start hitting steel with that you will find that nice edge chipping off and flying around.

I have one, my mom took it when I was younger and used it as a machete. It didn’t break or chip, and she was chopping brush. I still got it only thing wrong is the very tip broke off

At under 17", I'm not sure it even qualifies to be called a sword. It's styled in the fashion of a gladius but really poorly if you're even the least but into historical accuracy. It it is truly 1060, it should be safe enough to swing around, though a blade that short is more knife than sword in my opinion and definitely much more of a thruster than a cutter.

I bought this on a whim in my 20’s and actually forgot until it arrived. Blade develop a wobble fairly quickly. I have other brush wacking tools.

Yes, 1060 is great for large blades and United Cutlery does a great job with these types of blades. They're supposed to beat shit up (for a while).

I bought a cheap "tacticus" style like that and found that the blade was so overly heavy it wasn't safe for any purpose. It swung back at me way to easily and with a crappy grip there was a constant threat of dropping it.

If you aren't sure, I'd recommend saving up for a good piece than to resign yourself into buying something you won't like and be farther away from buying the real deal.

Yes, I had one for a while just for shits and giggles. You can beat the crap out of it and if you do break it, whatever. It’s cheap enough to replace. I never broke it, but bent it a few times swinging at tree branches. I just bent it back and kept swinging lol. It can take a nasty sharp edge too.

This line from UC is surprisingly decent.
I have the spartan one and it’s quite good with a great temper. It bends like crazy and comes back to true like nothing. Holds an edge nicely too.
I don’t know how well the handle material would hold up if you were to hit a hard object, but you’re not supposed to do that anyway.
I’d say go for it. It’s worth the money. And easily replaceable if you break it.
