I want to share my experience so other Santa Monica College students don’t potentially fall for the same trap. I came across a post advertising a free MacBook giveaway through the SMC Alpha Gamma club. The person contacted me using the name Harley Cute. The scammer claimed that they wanted to give away a MacBook Pro M3 for free to someone who was struggling to get a new laptop. As an SMC student who needs a reliable laptop for college coursework, I was genuinely interested. Because the giveaway appeared in an SMC-related community, I initially felt more comfortable trusting it. However, what happened afterward raised serious concerns.
Here’s what actually happened:
I was asked to pay $70 using an Apple Gift Card.
The person said Zelle wasn’t working and asked me to purchase a $70 Apple Gift Card and send it to their email to cover shipping. They had initially presented the MacBook as a free giveaway, so this payment request was unexpected. I purchased the gift card and sent the $70. I later attempted a separate $70 payment through Venmo, but Venmo displayed a scam warning and stopped that payment. I did not proceed with that Venmo payment. I also noticed the actual name in Venmo changed to someone called Whitney - Stepan. That clearly made me realize that this might be a scam. The shipping documentation raised red flags. After receiving the gift card, the person sent me a shipping-details screenshot claiming the MacBook was being shipped to me. The screenshot listed USPS as the carrier, but I couldn’t find an obvious tracking number. Some of the figures on the document also appeared inconsistent, and I became concerned that the screenshot might have been altered. I asked for the actual shipping receipt and tracking information so I could independently verify the shipment. Obviously the photoshopped image l helped me confirm my suspicion. I was asked for another $50 Apple Gift Card for supposed insurance. The person then claimed that because the MacBook was being sent from Canada, they had to pay an additional insurance fee of $55. They asked me to send another $50 Apple Gift Card to reimburse them. They also said they had already paid the insurance fee themselves, but later claimed that the delivery was being held until I paid it. In another message, they said the MacBook was at a UPS location in Los Angeles, despite the earlier screenshot identifying USPS as the carrier. They repeatedly pressured me to send the additional money, saying that the MacBook would be delivered within an hour once the fee was paid. I also noticed that an insurance fee is actually optional and not required. The explanations kept changing. When I continued asking for proper documentation, the person said they had misplaced the original receipt and that the screenshot they had sent was an emailed receipt. They told me to calm down, said I was delaying the delivery, and insisted that the MacBook was already mine. They also mentioned using the insurance money for their girlfriend and asked me to reimburse the supposed expense. I still had no independently verifiable tracking information establishing that the MacBook had actually been shipped to me. Communication stopped after I refused to send more money. I eventually made it clear that I would not send anything else without verifiable shipping documentation. The person became defensive and stopped responding after I said I was no longer interested. I cannot independently prove every detail of their intentions, but the sequence of events strongly suggests a possible gift-card scam.
Why I’m sharing this:
I lost $70 on the initial Apple Gift Card. I refused to send the additional $50. I want to be clear that I am reporting what happened to me, not claiming that the college itself endorsed this person. I don’t know whether the original post was officially affiliated with SMC or whether the person was actually an SMC student. If this person or giveaway has appeared in other SMC club groups, I hope the moderators can investigate and warn members if appropriate.
Has anyone else encountered this account or a similar MacBook giveaway? I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has experienced something similar.
Please be careful, and NEVER send Apple Gift Card codes to someone claiming they need them for shipping or insurance. Note: The scammer also attempted to delete the photoshopped image as a means of tampering with evidence but thankfully I had saved the image previously. Thank you for your time.
