First Run Karhu Fusion 5.0 first impression
About me: 28M, 5'11, 155 pounds, 70-80 miles per week, 1:23 half PR. Easy pace is around 7:30-45 per mile right now. I’ve always been interested in trying Karhu since I work at Fleet Feet and we’re the only store in the US that physically carries their shoes. Finally got the Fusion to add to my already way-too-crowded trainer rotation (Novablast 5, 1080 v15, Launch 12, Mach X 2, Mizuno Sky Prime, UFO, Sonicblast and an Alphafly and Vaporfly I don’t use for races anymore). Did 8 miles in them today. I’ll organize my thoughts below (TLDR, loved them.)
Fit is pretty much true to size in men's 8.5. Toebox is quite roomy, which I enjoyed. Lockdown was secure all throughout the run, laces were flat and nicely textured. I walked around in them for a couple hours at work to get used to them and I thought the tongue and instep were a bit shallow at the time, but had no issues on the run, didn't feel cramped at all. Could feel my left big toe rubbing against the end of the shoe for the second half of the run. Not enough to reeeaaaalllllyyyyy annoy me and I was wearing pretty thin socks anyway. And honestly, with how big my rotation is, I'm only gonna be wearing these once or twice a week, so I can't ever see it becoming a problem.
They're already some of my favorite shoes aesthetically (come on, there's a bear on the heel tab). Heel and tongue have plenty of padding, nothing to complain about as far as upper comfort. I did read a couple reviews online that mentioned they warm up pretty easily. It's only 60 degrees where I live right now so this wasn't an issue tonight, but I see what those people meant. There are no ventilation holes at all. And considering the color way I got, I doubt I'll be using these much in the summer.
Specs: Karhu claims 9.8 oz and a 33-27 mm drop. I didn't feel much reason to dispute those, though they felt slightly thicker+taller than 33 mm. Midsole is beaded ATPU with a fulcrum located near the midfoot that's meant to be more propulsive than supportive like it is in other Karhu models. This is not a soft shoe. I'd probably compare it to a less-aggressive Azura or a lower-profile Hyperboost Edge. The rocker is there but much more subtle, and the ATPU + fulcrum provides a ton of pop. I felt like the shoe wanted me to keep increasing my turnover the deeper I got into my run. They're probably too heavy to use for track sessions but they're basically as fast as I ever need from a daily trainer. If you like ground feel, you'll probably hate this shoe because there is pretty much none. But I enjoyed the strong energy return, shock absorption and never bottomed out like I might in a softer shoe. Their thickness/firmness makes me optimistic that I'll get a pretty long life out of them. My arch felt nicely cradled as well.
I ..... think it's appropriately priced at $170? It feels like it sits somewhere in between a standard daily trainer and a premium trainer. If you love a fast, rolling sensation but think the Fuelcell Rebel is too soft/the Azura is too unforgiving/anything like that, definitely worth checking out.
