High arches causing severe pain when running

Hi everyone,
I’ve had high arches since birth, and one of my legs used to be longer than the other. I wore orthopedic insoles for years, but about three years ago, the difference in leg length corrected itself. My doctor told me I no longer needed insoles, but warned me that my high arches might cause problems with finding suitable shoes.
I’ve been trying to get into running for the past two years, but every time I run, I develop severe pain around my arches after just 200 meters, forcing me to stop. I’ve tried different shoes, lacing techniques, running surfaces, and other adjustments, but nothing seems to help.
What’s confusing is that I regularly play football with my friends, including matches where I sprint a lot, and I have absolutely no pain or problems there.
I’m honestly getting desperate because I really want to run, but I have no idea what to try next.
Has anyone experienced something similar or found a solution? I’d appreciate anything.

Do you actually change your runs because of air quality?

I've seen plenty of discussions about running during wildfire smoke, but I'm curious about regular days when the air quality isn't great, just not terrible.

Do you normally check AQI before a run? And has it ever actually made you change your plans?

Like running earlier or later, choosing a different route away from traffic, switching to a treadmill, or just skipping the run.

Or is air quality something you only think about when there's visible smoke?

Also curious what apps or sources you trust for checking AQI.

Sneezing fits post run

I cannot stop sneezing after any kind of distance running. It's been happening for years and it's miserable for about 90 minutes after a run.

Any suggestions for dealing with this?

I built a tool to generate custom Garmin workouts in seconds

Hello runners 😃

Tired of rigid training plans? I built SegLab, a tool that generates custom, personalized pace workouts for your Garmin watch in just a few seconds.

It is currently built exclusively for Garmin, but others platforms will be coming soon.

The beta is live (I'm looking for my first users except of my friends, it is free to use), and I'd love to get your feedback: https://seglab.fr/

I've never been a great runner and I have coughing after I go runs with intense cardio. What could be the issue?

I've been trying to train so I can join the military, and one of the things that I'm pretty weak at has always been running. I'm trying to improve my time so I can potentially join the Coast Guard.

One thing I've noticed as the weather has gotten colder though is when I go on intense runs, I'll have coughing issues after I go running. It will usually last a few hours and then I'll feel fine.

From reading here, I'm not sure if this is exercise-induced asthma or perhaps something else? I don't have a history of having any lung issues, so I don't know if it's weather-related or maybe a heart thing?

I don't have a ton of money right now to see doctors about this, and I'm kind of afraid to tell a recruiter since I'm supposed to go to MEPS soon.

Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated.

Pain near my Achilles 10k November 15

Hi while running a 5k yesterday I started to feel pain (feeling like a cramp) around my Achilles tendon on my left foot. I stopped did some extra stretching and then went on felt fine. I was running with a friend new to running and she asked me to walk for a km I agreed nbd but while I was walking it actually hurt!! It scared me. When I picked back up to a jog it felt better. What could be happening?! I have a race around the corner and I'm trying to stay calm. Could it be my shoes? I feel fine walking around my house doing normal things this only happened twice now both during training.

Always feel unwell post hard effort/race

Hello, I've been running for over 15 years and have run races from 5K to half marathons. Without fail, anytime. I exert myself to the max, especially in heat (but also applies in cool weather) I get a headache afterwards and I get very warm/unable to regulate my temperature well.

I am a salty sweater and I take in a very good amount of electrolytes/sodium, I fuel myself well before and during a run and afterwards I always consume juice and other sugars to replenish myself.

Still, this persists. This does not happen after training runs, unless it's a really intense speed day then I will get a headache, but I'm just wondering if anyone else experiences this and if there are any thoughts on how to avoid it? I really getting old at this point.

I did a half marathon today and I really gave it my all and here I am very flush, have a headache that won't go away. Not feeling good. It kind of sucks the fun out of racing.

Thank you!

Struggling with my running progress latelystuck with a low VO2 max and inconsistent heart rate despite 6 months of Zone 2 training, so I’m trying intervals now to see if that helps me get faster. Any tips on how to structure my 4 runs a week to actually see some improvement?

My zone 4 hr is like 7:30 pace and zone 2 is 9min and zone 3 os around 8:30 I use the huewei gt6

What bugs me is that my zone 2 is at 9min plus pace and im 5ft9 and 83kg

Knee pain?

This is especially for any other heavy runners like myself but if anyone at all has tips, please share! I am running often and enjoying it, but being a bit overweight, my knees tend to experience a bit of pain, especially after a run. I am not limping while running or anything like that, but there is definitely a noticeable discomfort both during and after a run. Do any other bigger runners with sore knees have tips for how they deal with the pain or how they helped mitigate it? I have dreams of doing a marathon at some point in the future and don't want to risk a big injury or anything in the meantime.

Ex-runner looking to get back into running with my young child

All throughout high school I was a varsity cross country and long distance track athlete. Humble brag but I was pretty good lol. I was offered a scholarship for college based off my running but covid happened my senior year and life had other plans. Fast forward to now, it’s been 6years since I graduated and I haven’t run AT ALL and I’ve gained a good 80lbs of adult weight after being anorexic my whole high school life. I now also have a 4.5yo child who I’d like to get into running with as a sport to build self confidence and personal endurance for them. How do I get them to build that endurance?? It’s finally starting to cool down so I want to take them with me to the park to start but I’m nervous they’ll run for maybe 5minutes and then be over it. I was the type of runner who just needed to go and push through it to finish. Again I have not run AT ALL since I graduated high school in 2020 so we’ll both be starting at nothing. How do I build that drive to keep going and pushing through the uncomfortable feelings to finish for my child?

Shin splints

This is the second time I’m getting shin splints.

I think the major cause is that I play football also and my legs overload.
Last Tuesday i went for a run in the morning and football in the night. Next day, I’m done.

It’s actually irritating lol. I realised that it also happened to the fact that I reduced my strength training for legs. The stress accumulation is real.

Is there any way to recover faster 😬?

Tendinitis sucks and I want to run again

Age: 25 - Male
PB mile 7:55
Miles per week average peak: 20
Current miles per week: 0 ;-;

Starting in late 2024, early 2025 I began my running journey. I was at 255 to 260 pounds, and did everything right. I started slow, and increased my mile times, and how long I would run each time. After about six months, I was addicted. I would be running every single day and trying to get 5 miles in an hour or setting PB mile times. I was putting on 20+ mile weeks, and I loved it.

As of six months ago, I was experiencing terrible pain in my knee, and pushed through. After a rough start, each run was still awesome, then the next two or three days would suck. Going down the stairs was awful. I hated it. So I started biking. Eventually, the same thing happened.

Go to the doctors to talk about it, and it was most likely my shoes. He diagnoses me with tendinitis.

I want to run again so bad. I think about it every day. For runners who have experienced the same thing, or have anything similar, when did you go back to running? When did you feel confident even being able to go slow compared to where you were? Even biking sucks, and when I go to the gym (yeah, I'm on a treadmill and exercise bike at planet fitness) it bothers me. What should I be shrugging off and what should I avoid?

For context, now I'm at 215lb (I wanna get back down to 195lb) and got a new pair of proper running shoes. I also have beefy legs for lifting. I can max out the leg extension machines at planet fitness quite comfortably, and have been making an effort to try and train the tendons specifically by holding the extension for as long as possible during a lift.

Anything else I can do would be appreciated.

Feeling pretty good about my running but Coros been hating.

Post image
2 Upvotes

I just started running again back in August (2months ago). 48 year old male who was a competitive high school runner then a smoking party animal for years. I’ve been a very active mountain biker for years, also. Sometimes congruently.

In the past three years I’ve done a few multi week bike tours, I ride 50 mtn bike miles a week for the last couple years. The point is, my aerobic endurance is compromised but way good compared to those years behind me.

Today I ran my first 10 mile run. 1,000 ft. elevation. 2hours. I realize Coros is a clanker but dam, she dropped my running fitness score. Not significantly but it dropped. It may not really matter but I was pissed. A month ago, I don’t think I would’ve even finished that run.

I’m not trying to ditch my new watch but I’m not so interested in listening to her drunk sister. that’s for sure.

Anyway, mybcurrent goal is to complete a half many the new year, a marathon by next new year. Any advice from the community?

Shin and ankle pain

I’m a very active person (lift 5x a week) but never been serious about running. I’m trying to get into it as I train for a spartan 10k super but I experience so much shin and ankle pain/strain when running. I feel like I’ve tried everything: running outside vs. on treadmill, getting new running shoes and breaking them in, different stride lengths and paces, flat terrain vs. hills, taking longer rest periods. By a half mile in, my shins and ankles are in enough pain that I’m forced to stop and walk for a while before continuing to run, but I’m still pushing through the pain.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Pain while running

Very often when I go for a run I will get very bad shin splints even at a slow pace where my feet sometimes will go numb and I’ll have to stop. After stopping for 10 minutes or so I’m ok. I usually run 2-4 times a week 3-7 miles at a time. Is there a way I can better warm up to prevent this? Or could it be another issue?

IT Band and NYCM

Im a little under 2 weeks out from the NYC Marathon. During an easy run on October 5th I started experiencing extreme sharp pain in the side of my right knee while I was on a downhill. Ever since then I’ve been dealing with on and off pain in that area. Through internet research and speaking with a PT (family friend) everything is confirmed it’s my IT Band. Last week on October 12th I attempted a long run after resting the previous week and was only able to make it to 10 miles. I was limping and dealing with sharp pain for days after. Since then I’ve been resting, stretching, and doing specific glute and quad exercises as instructed by the PT. I even got a band for my leg to relieve the pain. Sometimes it hurts to walk (today specifically) and sometimes the pain is gone. I’m feeling really discouraged and had a sad realization the other day that I might have to defer. As of right now there’s no way I could run 26.2 and I have a gut feeling the pain won’t go away in time for marathon day. Has anyone gone through a similar scenario? I have a feeling I will have to defer ):

For those who got injured and can't run. What do you do to cross train?

Hi! I recently had an injury and I saw recommendations that I should consider cross training. Do you have any suggestions? I'm considering the elliptical trainer or maybe the bike. I honestly don't know. Give me some suggestions. Thanks!
