2k erg pr first year
Hey guys 35m 5'10 190lb I started rowing first time this summer on the water. I loved it and was usually in a boat 3 times a week. Kept up with the erg as well.
Just sharing my experience with a max effort 2k on the erg so someone might be able to learn from any of my mistakes or positives.
I'm coming out of a decade of chronic pain and being able to be active again is incredible for me, I just want to wake up every day and be grateful I'm not in that state anymore and can run and play with my kids, be the dad and man I want to be.
I think my first 2k on the erg was around 8:20,
Sept I had it to 7:12 with stroke rate around 26.
I wanted to break 7 so started reading on the sub and technique and got comfortable stroking around 30 spm.
I did two erg workouts a week(hard 500m intervals and a 5k) plus my regular weight training.
I had intervals scheduled for today but it's been about 2 months so I wanted to see where I was at.
I've been eating really well for about a month, did a bunch of positive reflection on why I could do this scary task in front of me. (Family and friends that love me, great day at work yesterday, good sleep last night, lots of water, beautiful sunshine, basically took a few minutes and thought about all the wonderful things while also acknowledging this was going to be very difficult but something I had prepared for , was short in duration and worthwhile.
I wrote down my race plan (I found on here) 7:00 = 1:45/500m. Aiming for stroke rate 30-34
1st 500m: 1:47 2k +2
2nd 500m 1:46 2k+1
3rd 500m 1:45 2k
500m-200m remaining 1:44 2k-1
Final 200 : 1:38
I had it on a piece of paper next to the erg. Committed to memory. Did a warm up 2k , maybe 2:20 / 500m .
Then I went for it.
1: felt great.
2: felt good. (Surprised at lack of pain here)
3: feeling it now but knew that I was going to do it.
4: struggling. 7/10
5: 9/10 but I could have probably started that sprint at 250 to go. Max 300m. Had to lay on ground after for a few minutes but I could get a few words out so I still had some left.
I was honestly surprised how well today went and I'm grateful for all the things in my life that let me do it including this sub. Thanks guys and good luck to everyone with their journeys.
