Hi all, this is your friendly neighbourhood mod here. After some internal debate, we’ve decided that we will no longer allow posts requesting to identify a rock. These posts have taken over this sub, and it’s not the point of the sub. There’s already a community focused on IDing rocks, and most of the posts here are cross-posts from there.
So, what is this subreddit about? It’s about celebrating our love for rocks. This is a place to celebrate and discuss our niche passion of rock collecting or admiring pretty rocks.
Please remember to be nice to each other. You rock.

I was excited to find this. It initially had debris in the hole so at first glance I wasn’t sure if it was a hagstone, but despite the little lump, it is! I am unsure what kind of rock it is though.

Hi, I recently received this large chunk of pyrite but after cleaning it up I realized it had all of this greenish stuff on it. Googling it, I learned about pyrite decay but I keep seeing conflicting answers on how I might be able to deal with it. This is my first time dealing with anything like this and I really hope there's something I can do, it really is a gorgeous stone 😭

Are rocks allowed to be wet forever? Or will they get soft.

found this while digging for shells in the ocean with my feet LOL. At first of course I thought it was a fossilized shark tooth but no… just nature making it look exactly like one.
