News Introducing Rhino Maps: A plugin for City, Terrain, and 3D Tile Data
I'd like to introduce Rhino Maps: a plugin to stream and download satellite imagery, 3D cities, and terrain directly into Rhino.
I’m looking for beta testers before launching. If you are interested, you can let me know here or in the comment section of my youtube channel. I mainly need to test multiple OS and computer specs to iron out any remaining bugs.
I’ll make an announcement with a tutorial on youtube when it is released, so the best way follow development progress is to keep up to date with the youtube channel.
I made this plugin over the past couple months after finding getting geospatial data into Rhino still being cumbersome and not leveraging performance techniques that have been used by web applications for years.
Key features:
- Tiled streaming of base maps, terrain, and photorealistic tiles
- Explore the globe at 60FPS, then set a boundary to render a hi-resolution site map.
- Stream editing: Edit, texture, mask, and apply display modes to streamed data, without needing to bake the geometry into the scene, preventing file slowdown.
- Full geometry import: bake the streamed geometry into the scene for offline use, for both local (OSM fetch) or regional data (PBF upload).
Streaming is an approach to keep the Rhino document lightweight. You can explore the entire planet and streaming will automatically handle the loading and unloading of the geometry that is visible to the camera. This alleviates a lot of the common bottlenecks of a heavy rhino file, and gives the user more room to explore and focus on their task at hand without hitting performance limitations.
Formats: Poly and Mesh Building and Base map streaming (CARTO or Mapbox styling)
Photomesh 3D Tiles (Google 3D Tiles)
Terrain (Higher quality than Photomesh for terrain only - AWS Terrain Tiles)
Looking forward to gauging if there is interest, and what you might be interested in using it for.
