Guide RTL-SDR compatibility list v.2 [work in progress, please help!]

This is now on a wiki, see here for the latest version

I'm starting a new post because the amount of comments in the last one were making things a bit hard to manage. Please start a new text post if you have something to say/ask that's unrelated to this list!

If you're just looking for an online source to buy a compatible tuner, see this list

/u/itdnhr had the great idea to start a list of compatible tuners, so here we go:

1 Should be, but untested.

This list is not guaranteed to be 100% accurate as similar looking devices may use different hardware. For info on Terratec tuners see here, for other tuners you can try here.

Please note the following:

  • Any chipset other than the RTL2832U is unsupported by this project.
  • The frequency range depends on the tuner chip (the E4000 has the broadest frequency range, and highest compatibility).

Please leave a comment with details of any new tuner you've tested, or found somewhere for cheap!

Michele Bavaro was able to use a Newsky TV28T to receive a number of GPS satellites and graph their orbital positions on 1575 MHz.

http://michelebavaro.blogspot.it/2012/04/spring-news-in-gnss-and-sdr-domain.html

He has high praise for the utility of this RTL2832U/E4000 combo - considering the price.

Sweet, post that article so more people can see it!

Is there anywhere for a hardware hacks yet? Just considering a crystal heater to improve the frequency stability ala http://www.minikits.com.au/kits3.html#eme177 this one is too big but I have seen a smaller simpler one using a thermistor, transistor & a couple of resistors(the heaters) which may even fit inside a large dongle case.

Caution on the 2nd one listed: "EzTV ISDB-T" on eBay. Just received mine sold by "top-gift-shop". It's incompatible. lsusb shows: "187f:0201 Siano Mobile Silicon Nova B". Opened it up to find a single chip branded "SiANO, mobile silicon", SMS1140 - no joy.

Couple pics (obligatory crappy cell phone comment):

Sorry to hear that. I don't think that one's the same as the one on the list though. Seem like the one I was referring to is all sold out now, removed it.

This looks like the Newsky but I have no further information on it.
This one looks like the Unikoo. I sent an email asking for information but have not met a response.

I have not received any information from Dealextreme since I was told that my prospective replacement was also out of stock and they have had my money for about a month now so take that into consideration before you place an order with them.

Apparently some come with Realtek chipsets, some don't. If you can track down some more info then I'll add it.

Could we please add a column 'frequency range' for the ones that are known to work?

1

u/roger_ Apr 12 '12

The frequency range is determined by the tuner chip (e.g. 1700 MHz for the E4000). I can add a legend if someone gives me data for the FC001x chips.

Please add a note next to the P160 about the P320. Someone might not see the P320.

Good idea, done.

u/atomicthumbs Apr 13 '12

Do any of these function better than the others in any way, or is it all just cost/appearance/reliability of source?

1

u/roger_ Apr 16 '12

Some have better tuner chips (like the E4000), and ESD protection diodes. Not sure if any have LNA's or other features.

I just received a Terratec Cinergy T Stick Black (rev1). http://www.terratec.net/de/produkte/Cinergy_T_Stick_Black_107610.html It contains RTL2832U/FC0012. VID 0CCD PID 00A9. Tested with EXTIO.

According to Terratec, the rev2 contains an E4000, but so far I haven't seen any rev2 stick.

Just got an EZTV646, which definitely has the 666/668 guts in it.

I've got P160 (Uniko), VID 0BDA 2832 MI 00, with device hint RTL shows as Hama Nano and I get lot of errors like "While setting frequency: I2WriteByte: the control request was not supported by the device [-9] @ E4000_gain.." when runnung hdsdr.. After few reinstalls of the extio driver (used with hdsdr, xp) the extio shows an old frequency set and does not tune.., PS: the plug/unplug of the dongle helps, then the hdsdr restart sets the last freq entered in hdsdr

BTW I think that's a driver issue, it works better with librtlsdr.

ezcap EzTV668 just received from DealExtreme - lsusb:

Found 1 device(s):

Using device 0: ezcap USB 2.0 DVB-T/DAB/FM dongle

Found Fitipower FC0013 tuner

Benchmarking E4000 PLL...

E4K range: 1 to -1 MHz

E4K L-band gap: 0 to 0 MHz

A lot different results than the other one that I ordered earlier. Seems sloppily made with no light and stock antenna bore hole too large to screw on antenna. Might want to consider different source or if you order one, check it right away when you receive it.

Note: Tuner change from E4000 to FC0013. At this point don't really care, just wish it was functional.

Hi, I have the dongle with R820T tuner which is not supported now. I can use it with direct conversion mod only. I wonder do you plan to support it? It looks like many devices with this tuner instead of E4000 are sold on e-bay. It has 42-1007 MHz range and pretty good sensitivity on FM (with native SW). http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30247616/R820T/120903_RTL2832_2836_2840_LINUX%2Brc%2Bdab%2Bfm.rar http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30247616/R820T/R820T_datasheet-Non_R-20111130.pdf Password for PDF 12JAF05
