Weekly Visitor Questions

Kia ora and welcome, whether you're here for a week or you've been here since the town had one supermarket.

This is the thread for visitor questions. Itineraries, day trips, where to eat, which lake activities are actually worth the money, whether you need chains in July, what to do when it rains for three days straight. Ask away. No question is too basic and nobody here is going to sneer at you for it.

Why we ask you to use this thread: r/Queenstown is a small subreddit for a small town. When a dozen separate "3 days in Queenstown, what should I do?" posts land in a week, the front page becomes entirely holiday planning and the local stuff (roadworks, rentals, council nonsense, lost dogs, the state of the traffic) gets buried. That's not great for the people who live here, and it's honestly not great for you either, since a scattered post gets three replies while this thread gets the locals who actually know things.

So: enthusiasm very much welcome, just pointed in one direction. Consolidating it here means you get better answers and the locals stay calm enough to keep giving them.

Before you post, a quick nudge:

  • Have a scroll of the previous weekly threads, most questions have been asked before and the answers are good
  • Tell us your dates, budget and how much you like walking uphill, it makes the answers ten times more useful

Locals: be generous in here. These people are the reason we have that many restaurants for a town this size.

Posts asking general visitor questions outside this thread may be removed and redirected here. Nothing personal, we just like being able to find things.

Looking for a guy I met Monday am (3:00-4:00am), from Wales and a skydiving instructor.

It was in the Queenstown cbd

He was wearing a white shirt, and has hair to his shoulders.

He asked for my Instagram and I wish I gave it to him.

Dog flea / worm

Evening, we have just moved here from UK with our dog.

In the UK we'd get flea and worm treatment from the vet on prescription, as over the counter stuff wasn't effective.

My wife's family don't use flea treatment and only use supermarket worm treatment if their dog shows signs of worms. (They are in rural central Otago).

Thoughts / guidance appreciated.

Thanks!

E-biking in Queenstown

At the end of the year I’m road tripping the South Island bike parks with the family, all on e-bikes.
What’s the take on skyline bike park and cardrona - are people riding up or throwing their bikes on the chairlift/gondola?

PSA: Last day to enrol to vote is tomorrow 11:59pm or you won't be allowed to vote. Also if you need to change address, you have to do it by tomorrow night too or your electorate vote will be thrown out.

Let your kids know if you have any - 1/3 of the youth group isn't enrolled and most aren't aware. 80,000 Kiwis could be struck off roll compared to 2023

Hi all

I’m wondering if anyone has had the same issue. We have had nearly 50% of our windows fail (new in 2018)
(started fogging between the double glazing).

They come out and replace them but it’s always a big wait time.

Wondering if anyone else is having this issue? There are some windows we will never know if they have failed or not due to their position in the house.

Solo Earnslaw Burn Hike

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the help in my last post. Much appreciated. For new viewers I’m 20M and planning to do the Earnslaw burn hike solo this Saturday. Weather seems to be pretty clear and sunny all day. Just a few questions on what I should pack.

  1. Should I get waterproof hiking boots? I’ve heard there is mud everywhere and river crossings. Will I actually have to walk through rivers. Also will it be muddy this time of year?

  2. I’ll be bringing a spare change of clothes. I’ll be wearing a thermal, t shirt and jacket as well as long pants. Will be bringing short pants in case it does get hot. Is there anything else I should bring or is that enough?

  3. Any notorious crossings or bits of gear I’m missing or should be aware of?

  4. Is the water flowing down the waterfalls at the end view points or is it pretty dry. Anyone with recent photos please send them. I’d appreciate that.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated and any knowledge would also be great. Thanks

Solo Earnslaw Burn Hike

Hi Guys,

Just a few questions about the Earnslaw burn track hike. I’m 20M and looking to do the Earnslaw burn track solo. I’ve seen videos on TikTok and read reviews all over the internet and it seems to be a pretty hard hike. Are these reviews credible or just bad reviews from inexperienced hikers who realised they weren’t fit for the challenge. I’m looking to go over the next couple of days and am staying in Queenstown.

  1. Is there phone coverage for most of the trail or is there no reception?

  2. How long does it actually take to the view point and back?

  3. How easy is it to lose the track and is most of the track marked with arrows on the trees?

  4. Has anyone done it recently and can give me a good idea of the current conditions?

  5. Has anyone got photos of the viewpoint recently?

  6. Is it doable to do the whole hike in one day?

Any help or knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Flame and Grill Bar

How do you guys really feel about the ribs? I just want to rant a little. I did my research on this subreddit and almost everyone recommended the ribs at Flame and Grill bar.

I don't know, I was quite dissapointed. The meat fell of the bone when you really tried your best, the meat itself was dry, chewy and tasteless as it was not dry rubbed or seasoned before probably put in a sous-vid. The sauce wayyyyy too sweet (which was actually a good thing as the meat itself was dry as sand).

I had expectations and they were not met to say the least. I did really like the ribeye 350 grams though! Delicious, tender, well seasoned. Made my night with their delicious fries and mushroom sauce.

Gay Queenstown?

How is it to live in Queenstown as a gay guy?

I currently live in Auckland but thought a change of scenery would be nice. I know there's Winter Pride and surely other gay events throughout the year, but in general how is it to be gay and live there? Are there enough guys around? Looks like lots online. Is it easy to make friends generally and with other gays? I'd probably only look to live there for a year or two so not necessarily looking for long term friendships. Also what's the general attitude of the people who live there like who I'd be working with, are they gay friendly? Is it less corporate/'conservative' feeling than Auckland? Thanks

Former Clutha Mayor voted National for years, explains why he's changed his mind

Folks, here's the video if anyone wants to see it

It's from the Press article where they note:

Former Clutha mayor Bryan Cadogan has defended his political comments as his own personal views after a video interview with The Press was widely viewed.

In the video, which has been watched nearly 200,000 times on Instagram and TikTok and shared widely, Cadogan explains why he switched allegiances after being a National voter for years.

“There’s going to be a day of reckoning coming. For many years, I voted National ... They're not the party that I used to vote for,” he said.

One of the most memorable quotes is where he says young people sometimes just need a hand up to get their life back on track but National is choosing to give them a fist down, which he says shows how out of touch the party is with ordinary Kiwis

We're spending Christmas Day in QT and don't want to cook a dinner. Are there bars/restaurants that do Christmas dinners and would also be good fun?

Queenstown hotel booking up for grabs Nov 24-27

Hi all! Posting this in multiple subreddits to try and cast a wide net. My husband and I had planned a big New Zealand trip this November, with a bunch of fun things lined up across the South Island that we were really excited about.

Unfortunately, our dog recently got sick and started having seizures, so we’ve made the tough decision to cancel the trip and stay home with her.

We have a prepaid booking at Hotel St Moritz Queenstown that’s non-refundable, but they are allowing us to transfer it to another person.

It is for 3 nights- November 24-27 that we paid about $1700 NZD total for.

We’re hoping to find someone who might be interested in taking over the reservation. We’re not expecting to get back the full amount and would be very willing to give it away at a significant discount. At this point, we’d be happy just to recover some amount that can go towards vet bills.

If anyone happens to be around Queenstown around those dates and is interested in a mini getaway, please send me a message! Happy to share more booking details over DM or hop onto a call to figure out something that works for both of us.

Books to Give Away

Hi folks, I'm making a post on behalf of my mum who lives in QT who is hoping someone might take a few boxes of books off her hands. No charge, pick up only (Quail Rise).

She has around 100 books to give away, including approx:

~20 Lee Child (Jack Reacher series)

~10 J. D. Robb

~10 Simon Scarrow (series about Rome / Legionnaires, etc)

Other assorted titles, some classics. Many have been bought new and read only once, others she picked up second hand and are a bit worn.

She has tried donating to places like the Red Cross, etc, but most places are only interested in taking five or ten books, not several boxes worth. She is looking for someone to take the whole lot off her hands at once, if at all possible!

Anyone interested? Could make a cool Christmas present for a reader in your life, or someone looking for printed text for craft supplies?

EDIT: Thank you for the help lovely people, our books have found a new home!

Queenstown/Wanaka Hens Recommendations

I have a basic idea of things to do in the QT/Wanaka region, but I wanted to see if anyone had any unique or fun suggestions for a hen do in the Spring - mostly around Wanaka but starting in QT. Not a big party group - think more outdoorsy, foodie, crafty.
