Discussion S21E6: Critique Thread

This week is the street wear challenge!

Please upvote the designs you like, downvote those you don't, and leave un-voted anything you're neutral on. Some of our members like to look at the designs without knowing the outcome, so please use spoiler tags if you're referring to how a design did (or if you wish it had been out/ won). Thanks all!

Freeform isn't posting photos, so we're having to wait on the contestants to post on social media. For now we will post the names so discussion can begin, and we will add photos as soon as they are available. Thanks for your patience.

I think Ethan must have a secret team of little Cinderella birds and mice that live in his workstation or something because this is just too complex and pretty for a one-day construction, omg.

I physically can’t comprehend how Ethan did that in a day. Why only critique 4 people when there’s only 7 total?!

I think I would have liked it better if everything wasn’t all the same fabric.

Isn’t this a design challenge? How can we say where her inspiration came from? It’s irrelevant. PERIOD

someone else pls tell me they loved Ms. Joan's look, because i could absolutely see a whole streetwear photoshoot with her look and some different styling. listen "looking old" doesn't mean it isn't a LOOK and old folks still wear streetwear

i feel like yuchen just made a look he would wear, and i agree his own outfit was much better... it made me really sad to hear law say he wanted to beat him up over this look and then hear the apology yuchen gave. given what he's already said about his difficult upbringing i wonder how many times he's apologized before about not being able to meet the "expectations" others have of him and actually being beaten up by his father before. He's mentioned physical abuse and emotional trauma to the point he was unable to make eye contact with people... I already felt horrible for him and to hear law say afterwards that it makes him feel powerful to make other people cry? truly, i am disgusted. i recognize this is a tv show and in the fashion world which can be notoriously harsh, but this left a terrible impression on me and my heart goes out to yuchen.

ethan's look was insanely good! but idk if i love it for streetwear

edit: I tried to make this it's own post but was deleted because "Your post/comment is related to a recent episode and would be a better fit for the discussion thread."

So here is my expanded commentary on the whole law-yuchen moment no one asked for lol

even though i didn't like yuchen's look and i agree his own outfit was much better, it made me really sad to hear law say he wanted to beat him up over this look and then hear the apology yuchen gave.

I know law wasn't being literal and that kind of talk fits within a subculture where it's clear that isn't literal, but i dont think it's appropriate on a show like there where not everyone on the show shares that understanding AND this show is available to audiences globally of all ages. i can absolutely imagine some kid hearing this and thinking it's appropriate to make comments like that as part of a sassy persona and getting in real life trouble for it. maybe i'm reading too much into this based on what i've seen irl

also given what he's already said about his difficult upbringing i wonder how many times yuchen's apologized before about not being able to meet the "expectations" others have of him. he's actually been beaten up by his father before, he mentioned experiencing physical abuse and emotional trauma to the point he was unable to make eye contact with people. the look in his eyes shown by the cameras felt familiar to me, like a "don't show you're impacted, don't be weak, don't react" look of stepping one foot into detachment/dissociation. And the apology he gave felt like something he's given before, about apologizing for disappointing someone who literally said "i almost want to jump out the chair and beat you up" for a fashion look. I know law wasn't serious but it left a poor taste in my mouth. I already felt horrible for yuchen and to hear law double down and say afterwards that it makes him feel powerful to make other people cry? truly, i am disgusted. even if he said "this time" it didn't feel good. like really? how many times have you pulled this type of thing, how many people have you made cry and felt "powerful" in your own words? i recognize this is a tv show that seems to be upping the drama for their current target audience and is in the fashion world which can be notoriously harsh, but this left a terrible impression on me and my heart goes out to yuchen. i know maybe editing played a role, and maybe law was unaware of yuchen's background, but still. that potential lack of awareness is not an excuse, but rather highlights how inappropriate this kind of behavior is, especially in this kind of setting where there is a power differential, critique should be made productively, and it is being broadcasted. you never know anyone's history regardless of how they might present, which is why professionalism exists.

i used to be a fan of law, especially his work with zendaya over the years, but with the behavior displayed on this show? i'm feeling disappointed i was ever a fan.

maybe i'm reading too much into this and projecting based on my own life experiences but idk. am i being dramatic here? does this sound like projection? what do you all think?

edit 2: i'm not going to make anymore edits here and i can't believe i have to say this, but i'm not trying to "come for" law or execute some kind of take down based on his identity... i don't think it's inappropriate to comment on this behavior/commentary that didn't sit right with me. i understand that maybe people have said worse on the show in the past, but i would think we've progressed since 2004-2012, when MK was on, for example (i would certainly hope the type of talk about women in the public eye then would not fly today, but i know it has continued in many spaces and may be making a comeback just in a different way). i would like to think that it's 2025 now and we collectively have seen enough unkindness and violence in this world, but maybe i'm being too much here and i should stick to gentler shows. i'm not trying to police anyone's language or behavior, but it did hit me in a certain type of way and i wanted to hear what other people had to say. i will admit i'm not someone who enjoys drama or reality tv based on drama, my favorite person on old PR was always Tim Gunn because though he sometimes told people he didn't like their work or made faces, it always felt actionable and given gently with his own flair/form of sass. I never liked the drama/conflict or seeing the designers get ready in the housing the show provided for them. I recognize i am likely no longer the target audience for this show. i've seen people mention RPDR, partially because of ethan/utica, but i don't watch that so maybe i'm just out of the loop on this. i'm sorry if what i had to say came off as a targeted attack to anyone, that simply isn't my intent, and maybe i also had a stronger reaction due to my own experiences. maybe yuchen isn't even upset, but it did feel shitty to me and i'm sure it felt shitty to others who have also experienced similar. i also *liked* law and was excited to see him as a judge, so maybe my disappointment is stronger than if i had just been initially neutral.

E6...that ridiculous outfit Heidi wore at the first 'hello' to the designers was a freaking joke!!!!! An ugly, boring, beige shirt dress with a beaded curtain hanging to the floor????!!!!! Had any designer ever sent that down the runway...IN ANY SEASON...they would have been ripped to SHREDS!!! JUST HIDEOUS!!!

Glad Yuchen swapped the hood - the old one looked like Oogie Boogie’s cousin showed up

Who cares if Law likes someone’s story… IT’S HER STORY. I truly think he’s bias and should not be judging.

Antonio and Joan had a lot of similarities: ugly fabric, fringe, pants. Joan's sleeves were too much tho.

Do they crop a lot of cristians advice from the show? Cause this episode he's doing the consultation and all they put in is Cristian making fun of doing funny comparisons like please let us see the actual advice!

I feel like they purposely took the clearly stronger designers out of the top this week to “keep it interesting” (it didn’t- but they tried?)

Like is Belania or Antonio winning based on what we’ve seen? No Is Joan or yuchen? No. And I’m sorry Belania a winning look? I like her vibe and see her thought process, but you’re telling me you see someone on the street in that and that’s cool? That’s not they fell into a goodwill bin and did their best? 🤷‍♀️

The quality of designs and always having 1 day sucks. When I think back on previous seasons and some of the amazing things shown this show isn’t it. Law Roach 🪳 should just STFU already. He wants to talk about attitude? Come on. He’s 100% attitude 100% of the time. If Belania wants to inanely talk about Audrey Hepburn let her. Inspiration is inspiration you can’t tell someone to change it 🤦🏼‍♀️ let her explain her silly story of her awkward outfit (that you liked - love to see someone wearing that silly polka dot top in Brooklyn and look cool 🙄)

Heidi too- her commentary is a waste of time. No value in anything she says.

I think Christian is trying to fit into this weird format they’re going with. Of course Tim Gunn was a completely different approach, but I feel like Christian has always been like able as a coach overall- Tim is just irreplaceable!

Not showing the loser each episode is also such a lame move. I have always loved project runway but after being excited for a new season every episode has been a let down. Episode 6 and where are the stunning designs? Where is the cinematic feel? Where is there a judge we give a F about? It’s like the great value version of project runway 👎

It feel like they clearly picked the top two for the storyline. Not that they did not deserve it, but every single challenge we have at least three people on top. Why not criticize all the looks when there are only 7 contestants? Too much riggery this season

I have to be honest and this is just my opinion of streetwear. I feel like no one this week delivered on streetwear, I view streetwear as a little grunge and honestly a little gentrified. Belenia being top was wild to me her outfit gave pinup girl with some one that pinned clothes on their model. But really no one hit the mark of streetwear. yuchen understood streetwear but it was very basic so understand their critique (not the laws)

Law Roach is a really mean jerk and was so wrong in what he said to Belania!!! Her inspiration from Breakfast at Tiffany’s was real and he had no right to be mean to her !!  He literally said at the end of the episode that he enjoys seeing other people cry ?!

u/zaksag Aug 29 '25

I think Balenia's design should have been just safe. It was basic streetwear, not runway level. Veejay deserved a top two spot instead of her.

Ethan's outfit was amazing, but it was too elevated for the streetwear concept. Maybe it was better suited for futuristic streetwear.

Law Roach needs to calm down. Sometimes it feels like he makes controversial comments just to go viral on social media. He seems to be trying too hard to secure a permanent spot as a judge.

I do not understand what's going on with the judging. To me, the three safe ones were the top three looks. I also feel like the twin that was at the top should have been at the bottom.

u/vchmnuio Aug 30 '25

the judging this season is genuinely unbelievable. i dont know if its just me but belania winning over antonio?? neither veejay, ethan, or jesus being in the top this week?? joan being in the bottom???? like what??
