Should we move from Gauteng to PE?

**Considering relocating from Gauteng to PE – would love some honest advice!**

Hi everyone!

My husband has been offered an opportunity to relocate to PE through his current company, and we're seriously considering it.

We're currently living in Gauteng and have two children, aged 8 and 13, as well as quite a few pets (3 cats and a small dog). My husband would be working around Life St George's Hospital.

We've never been to PE, so I'd really appreciate some honest opinions from people who actually live there!

A few things I'd love to know:

**Areas:** Which suburbs would you recommend for a family? Ideally somewhere safe, family-friendly and not too far from Life St George's Hospital.

**Rentals:** What can we realistically expect to pay for a 2- or 3-bedroom house or townhouse, preferably in a secure complex? Are rentals generally affordable?

**Schools:** Both our children currently attend a school that caters for ADHD and Aspergers(autism), although they're both following the mainstream CAPS curriculum in LSEN schools and doing well. Are there any good schools in PE that offer similar support? Ideally, we'd like them at the same school.

**Safety:** How does crime in PE compare to Gauteng? Are there particular areas to avoid?

**Lifestyle:** What's it actually like raising a family there? Are there plenty of things to do with children?

**Pets:** How difficult is it to find rentals that allow multiple pets?

We're currently quite settled in Gauteng, so moving would be a big decision, especially with children and animals involved.

I'd love to hear the good, the bad and the ugly! Would you personally recommend making the move from Gauteng to PE?

Any advice, suburb recommendations, rental agency suggestions or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

A few things I'd love to know:

Areas: Which suburbs would you recommend for a family? Ideally somewhere safe, family-friendly and not too far from Life St George's Hospital.

Rentals: What can we realistically expect to pay for a 2- or 3-bedroom house or townhouse, preferably in a secure complex? Are rentals generally affordable?

Schools: Both our children currently attend a school that caters for ADHD and Aspergers (high autism) , although they're both following the mainstream CAPS curriculum in a LSEN school and doing very well. Are there any good schools in PE that offer similar support? Ideally, we'd like them at the same school.

Safety: How does crime in PE compare to Gauteng? Are there particular areas to avoid?

Cost of living: Is PE generally more affordable than Johannesburg, or should we expect expenses to be similar?

Lifestyle: What's it actually like raising a family there? Are there plenty of things to do with children?

Pets: How difficult is it to find rentals that allow multiple pets?

We're currently quite settled in Gauteng, so moving would be a big decision, especially with children and animals involved.

Late-in-life activities (37 year old child)

Hi everyone! I feel rather silly asking this out loud: at my big age, I'd like to start getting into more sporty activities, I have never really participated in anything because I was not interested. Give me a TV, or play me some music, a Harry Potter book, an encyclopaedia - I'm THERE. Sport, not so much. To the point that, my bicycle was sold, as a child, with the price tag on it.

Now I want to know is there any kind of activity where there is a beginner's class for tennis, riding a bike, swimming, whatever. I'm not fit at all but I can go on an 6-8km walk in my neighborhood and not die.

No idea why I didn't want to do anything, even vocal training (I can kinda do a very crooner-like sound a'la Tony Bennett) I have no idea how to access the upper register and all that. Or musical instruments.

I don't mind starting at the bottom but maybe not in front of kids 😅.

Live Music In GQ 24 Oct

Hello fellow GQ people. I'm looking for a spot to listen to some live music, eat and have a drink.

Frankies only has live music until 15:00. The silver fox ends at 17:00. And I have no idea if anything is happening at Bridge Street Brewery as they're not answering their phone.

So I come to Reddit seeking knowledge of the people.

Where can we find live music, food and drink and good vibes on this Saturday night.

Any clusterheads in PE? Never actually met one in person

Hey — I'm in PE and have cluster headaches. I've been dealing with this for a while now and I've never actually met another person who has them.

I'm not looking for advice or a support group. I'm just curious what it's like to meet someone who gets it without having to explain. I'd also be interested to hear how people handle the day-to-day stuff during a bout — like how do you get through work or social stuff when an episode hits? I know it's different for everyone.

If there's anyone around, I'd be up for grabbing a coffee or just saying hi. No pressure at all.

Shoot me a DM if you're local.

Crafting spaces or groups?

Hello, I'm looking for a community space or casual crafting group/club. Does anyone know of anything like this? Or perhaps know of a space that can be used for a small group of people to get together semi-regularly to hang out and do our own crafts?

Woolies food discounts

Hi guys, new to PE here, one of the evenings I went past one of the woolies at an Engen called Bluewater Bay and noticed they had discounts on all their groceries that is on the last day of their sell by date. (I totally didn’t mind because sell by date doesn’t mean it’s off). Does anyone know which other woolies have this? It’s just a little far for me to go there daily. I remember they used to do this at the woolies close to where I live in Cape Town as well.

Another unexplained power outage

The only update that you receive is that they are aware of the power outage.

We know this.

They are unable to let anyone know what the issue might be, which means they have no idea.

Been off for four hours already with no indication whether the idiots in charge are on site, or even at work today.

Sitting in the dark pondering whether raw macaroni is edible, watching my phone battery deplete...

Apologies for the vent, just a warning to anyone even contemplating on moving to this shithole municipality.

As the title implies I’m looking for cassette tapes.
Are there any shops in PE that still sells them or even if you know of people who sell them.

Thank you!

Looking for casual members

I have started a small, casual film club here (online only for now).

We pick a film, everyone watches it in their own time, then hop on a Discord call to talk about it - what you loved, hated, or really wanted to tell someone

The aim of this group:

- A social activity for homebodies who enjoy films

- No social pressure in the group, other than films, so we can stay focused

- To introduce others to films you enjoy, especially when your own friend group thinks you're the odd cinephile

- To expand your own knowledge of films, while also bringing your own flair to the group

We have had a few sessions already, but the initial group has since moved on:

Some info:

- Online via Discord -> Meeting slots depend on member availability, but I try to keep them non-intrusive, and sessions no longer than 1 to 1.5 hours

If you're interested, drop a comment below, and I'll follow up with details

Update_1: Thank you to everyone who commented! I have reached out to you via a DM.

Update_2: I think I've dmed everyone with the Discord link. If not, here we go:

Looking to sell my Oculus Quest

I'll be moving away soon and I'm hoping to sell my Oculus, it's a Quest 1 with 256gb storage. It has no damage to the lens or controllers as I kept everything sealed when not in use. It will be reset to factory settings to ensure none of my info is left on the quest. If anyone is interested, in getting this as something for their kids or for themselves, send me a message and I'll give more info and we can discuss a price.

Edit: I should mention, that I'll include the adapter and charger I used for it, which let's it connect to a pc if you want to use it that way

Trying to find a recipe…

A long time ago, about 30 years or so, there was a shop called C’est Si Bon in the little side entrance corridor between Shoprite Checkers and The Bridge at Greenacres. They had cookies that you could buy per kg in brown bags. Two of them I remember very well - one was a sort of walnut meringue, the other had chopped cherry pieces on shortbread I think.

Does anyone remember this place? And more specifically, if anyone has a recipe link to either of those biscuits / cookies… let me know! #niche

Riempies for dining chairs

Can someone maybe recommend me someone or someplace who can replace the riempies on some dining chairs for me? I’ve tried asking on FB, but I must not be asking on the right groups because I’m not getting any answers.
I’m also looking for someone /someplace who can repair an antique chair that’s leg was broken during our move here.

Is anyone else experiencing pre-paid electricity disappearing overnight? I went from using about R350 worth p/m to +-R1200

Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone can give me some advice.

I moved to a new place in June, only about 1 km from my previous home, but my electricity consumption has increased significantly.

At my previous place, I used approximately 80 units of electricity per month during summer, with slightly higher usage in winter. Since moving, I'm now using around 12 units per day and spending approximately R1,200 per month.

For context, I work from home - so my PC is on most of the day, and my son (I am a single parent, so one one else is in the house) also uses his PC regularly. We have a fridge and a small deep freezer, and mainly use a gas stove and airfryer to cook. The geyser is only switched on when needed (for 30min - 1 hour every 3 - 4 days), and I switch off plugs when appliances aren't in use. I have a washing machine I use once a week, sometimes twice (barely), my router, 1 small indoor camera and 2 small LED floodlights that barely goes on as it is in the back and on motion sensor. Most of our appliances are also energy-efficient - including my lights.

The only additional appliance compared to my previous place is the deep freezer, so I can't understand why my usage has increased so much. I have kept the same habits at both places.

Could this be normal consumption, or could there be an issue with the prepaid meter or wiring? i definitely have no one stealing power from me - as I have no neighbours around me. Has anyone else had this issue, and should I be contacting the municipality? I have no idea where to begin.

I'm down to my last units, and payday is only Friday, so I'm quite worried about making it last. Since I work from home, electricity is essential for me to keep working - but my overall quality of life has decreased a lot, due to the fact that I had to cut costs elsewhere to make sure I am able to afford to buy the new amount of electricity I need in a month.

I'd really appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thank you!

Need advice on accommodation

Hi everyone.

I’m not from PE but I’m going to coming in for an operation at Edge Day Hospital and will be needing to stay in PE for a few days after that.

I’m looking for places that are less than 15 minutes away from the hospital. I’m also looking for somewhere that is safe. And something that won’t break the bank too much. I also don’t need a big place as it will be just be and one other person. Oh and I’m also not looking for any house shares.

Any advice on what areas to ideally go for or what areas to avoid? Or even some recommendations on good accommodations that you know of ?

How bad is traffic from Lorraine to Walmer?

Hey guys, so I'm starting a new job in Walmer at the end of the month.

However I'm a little worried about the commute it's at the back of Walmer so it's about 12kms I think.

I stay in Lorraine, I am mostly worried about the traffic as it's a busy route.

Any tips on the route and best time to leave to avoid traffic? Hours are 8 to 4,30.

How many potholes do we have to endure in Port Elizabeth?

Most roads in PE have potholes, deep ones that can potentialy damage your car's tires. When they are repaired, by who knows who, it feels like you are driving over corrugated iron. What the eff is happening to our beautiful town?

Piercings

Out of curiosity & keenness. I've been wanting to do a genital piercing (frenum) & as far as I know East Coast Studio formerly at Baywest was the only piercing studio offering the kind.

Is there anyone who knows a studio here in GQ offering such services.

Thank you😊

Is PE safe?

I’ve been studying in Durban for the last 7 years and it is now time to decide whether to stay here or move home to PE. How are the current citizens of PE feeling? Do you enjoy the city you’re living in? Or should I rather stay in Durban?
