i accidentally thanked an automatic door today
i was leaving a shop earlier and someone was walking out just ahead of me. the door opened and i instinctively said "thank you!"
except the person hadn't held the door, the door was automatic!
the person turned around and looked at me and instead of just laughing it off, i pretended i was talking on the phone but i wasn't even holding my phone (gosh so embarrassed!)
but anyway, apparently i'm polite to doors now

I've responded to people talking on the phone via earbuds so many times I'd just assume that was it. You're all good!
And the doors have been working hard so they deserve it. 😉
(Edited to fix typo)

I always thank ATMs. One day the machines will rise up, and the ATMs will remember that I was polite to them. Fact.

In the late 90's/early 00's (can't remember exactly when), our local Taco Bell got a trash can that has a recording that says "Thank you" when you deposit trash into it. The first time my mom went to put stuff in and it said it, she said "You're welcome" back and then seemed really distressed, trying to understand if someone was actually talking to her. Me and my sister were dying laughing.

I try to be polite to the robots. You never know when skynet becomes reality.
