Read the rules before posting or commenting!

Due to a large influx of people not reading the rules and how small of a Mod team we are this is here to serve as the only reminder of the rules. Just to be clear asking or commenting about prices is a permanent ban, the internet is not the place to judge if prices are "fair".

Rules are available on the sidebar.

Any other plumbers ever deal with tennis elbow?

Just wondering if any other plumbers on here have dealt with it. It's looking like I may need to take a month off to let it heal.

How scewed am I?

So, long story short, my toilet was flushing extremely slowly, like ot would take 30 seconds to complete a flush, so my dad took the toilet off and the flange off, and the drain pipe under it was filled to the top with insulation from somewhere and sitting about a foot under and cocked to the left where the flange should be connecting to it. How do I fix this without tearing up my bathroom floor and costing me an arm and a leg? We bought a renovated house, but only on things we can see; everything else has been a nightmare, from HVAC to all the plumbing. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Does this water heater need to be replaced?

First time homeowner here! My spouse said the first thing we should do it replace to water heater, due to the rust. My dad said not to until its absolutely necessary?

Our showers are long and hot, there's no water gathering at the bottom. However I've been told the rust puts the water heater at risk of exploding? Its located in a closet in the master bedroom.

I appreciate your time and input!

Editing to add: Thanks everyone! We'll be replacing it and will be spending the next few weeks finding a plumber. I appreciate it!

Do I have a water stealing gremlin?

I got my utilities bill this month, and it says for the past two months, I’ve been using an extra 1000 gallons per week. So 4000 a month. I called them to figure it out, they said “oh your toilet has to be running”.

But it’s not. I know it’s not. I’ve dealt with that before. Math would say I’m losing 133 gallons a day. And that would be very noticeable and it would be running all the time.

It’s not my sprinklers. That valve is turned off, and if it was losing that much in my yard, again, it would be noticeable.

I made sure not run any water for an hour, and the meter didn’t move. So in that hour, somehow I didn’t lose any. Then I figured it must be a bad meter? So I filled a 5 gallon bucket, and the meter read exactly 5 gallons.

Anyone got any ideas? I’m totally lost.

Does this sewer pipe need to be lined?

VIDEO IN COMMENTS: We're breaking up concrete and digging down to do a spot repair. When it's opened up, should we also line the rest of the concrete pipe? The spot repair is just outside our house, where the cast iron and concrete pipes meet up with each other. The concrete pipe is about 75 years old.

Grandfathered?

I’m trying to sell my house in St. Louis and the occupancy inspection dinged the plumbing for my garbage disposal.

(P-TRAP SHOULD BE DIRECTLY UNDER DISPOSAL)

Question wouldn’t this be grandfathered?
He’s making me have a plumber pull a permit
Just to fix the issue. This seems a little overkill to me.

Good quality inner/outer reamer for steel gas lines?

Post image

I have to mega press a huge run of gas line tomorrow and it’s been awhile. I’m going to pick up a new inner/outer reamer tomorrow morning but I’m not sure which one to get. The rigid ones are expensive and do not mention they are capable of doing steel gas lines. Does anyone have a preference that can save me some headache? I’m worried to cheap out on a husky one and it nick a seal.

How to remove this filter faucet??

I need to remove this filtered water faucet, but I can't figure out how to get these toggle bolts off from underneath. Seems like the faucet itself should come off, or apart, so I could get to the screwheads. It doesn't want to twist apart, and I can't see or feel anything in that little pinhole. Advice??

What shutoff valve is this?

So, long story short, had a hot water leak under my house, couldn’t get to it from under the house so I had to go through the floor. I’ve replaced all of the floor except around the toilet because it’s the only one in the house and I’m trying to limit the amount of no toilet time. I went to shut the water off to the supply and…. Wtf, where is the shut off? I don’t even know what I’m looking at. Is this galvanized? The line suppling it under the house is copper. I bought a toilet wax ring kit that came with a quarter turn shut off with a new braided supply hose that I was going to change out when the time came but I don’t even know how to take this off. Is it as easy as turning off the water and unscrewing this off and replacing?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Hi all,

I need to replace the temperature sensor bulb that sits in the well of my Raypak natural gas hot water system and can't find installation instructions (photo attached).

Model: Raypak 538BOO

Serial: AN94081882

Fuel: Natural gas

Does anyone have a service manual or install guide for this model, or tips on swapping the bulb (thermal paste, retainer clip, etc.)? Any help appreciated.

Thanks!

Plumber can’t solve water hammer multiple attempts

Had new pipes installed through the house over a year ago. Get very loud knocks when washing machine runs (there are water arrestors on both hot/cold lines) and when the sprinklers change zones. Rest of the house is fine. Had the contracting company come out so they could hear and they agreed it was an issue. The plumber has come out 3 times, first he tried strapping down all the pipes more, second time he added even more clamps, third time he added what looks to be a valve to the pipe in the garage. Still the problem remains. I’m not sure what to do at this point. I don’t think this plumber can’t solve the issue himself but I think the contractor will say we have to use him.

Update: To answer many of the replies i measured today and it was 90psi, the entire house was repiped a little over a year ago, sprinkler system was installed after that, new water heater with expansion tank installed about 3 months ago and still get the same noises

Local 98 aptitude Test

I have to take all four tests for the UA Local 98 plumbing union. I have been studying my ass off and figuring it all out slowly. I have to score a 6 on math a level 5 on the other two and a raw score of 48 on the last test. Is there any advice you guys can give me to make me feel more confident. I’m a smart kid but not to smart when it comes to math and reading and comprehension, I have my test this Monday and feel very intimidated. Anything will help!

Can I route my water softener discharge line to my basement floor drain?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I recently purchased an Aquasure Harmony 64,000 grain water softener and I am limited for where I can install it in my basement due to outlet locations. My question is will my basement floor drain accommodate the amount of water this system generates during the regeneration cycle? This floor drain currently has my HVAC system condensate line draining to it.

check-valve sounds like a jackhammer

this is a spring-loaded check valve. When flow-rate is low, it sounds like a jackhammer.

If I touch it when it's making a noise, I can feel the vibration which is not enough to do any harm, but the noise is insane.

The above valve is all I can find at the big box stores.

Can anyone recommend a decent brand & model that's near-silent? Something I can buy without a trade-account at wholesale supplier.

thanks for any help .
