This sub really is just a circlejerk about how we’re so much better for pirating huh.

18

u/RubiiJee Sep 05 '26

When pirating becomes their entire personality....

-12

u/pattern-recognizer Sep 04 '26

It can be, sometimes.

Bud, we ARE the pirates and we are telling you that we are more likely to look like the first guy than the second one.

"Neckbeard" is a nerd stereotype. People who pirate digital media are overwhelmingly nerds. Sorry you had to find out this way.

2

u/EfficientAd5073 Sep 05 '26

Keep telling yourself what you need to hear to massage your insecurities. It was always the neck beard to embrace this stuff first. The guys in the other picture are too busy going on dates and enjoying life with friends to worry about what VPN to use with what torrent. But with that said these are both online extremes and as of everything life is somewhere in the middle. I would certainly say I look closer to the guy in the bottom photo. I have a wonderful hot girlfriend who loves me and I also pirate lots. The fact of the matter is this post is just dumb.

Bro shut up already! This one clearly hit close to home. Everyone here except you can accept that someone who has qBittorrent, Emule, and NAS are neckbeards.

You're really gonna tell me that someone who has all that stuff downloaded looks like a chad?! At least we accept it, unlike you who got their panties in a bunch.

OP posted a funny meme and ItepK's comment was a funny reality check that everyone accepted except you.

-71

u/pattern-recognizer Sep 04 '26

That's the fun part lol

21

u/wassimSDN Sep 04 '26

what does that even mean??

So the joke is he's just a poser (just a joke tho)

Unironically painting yourself as the gigachad is never funny. Its just cringe.

1

u/pattern-recognizer Sep 04 '26

True. But sometimes I like to be cringe and make people uncomfortable lol

-1

u/pattern-recognizer Sep 04 '26

I don't want to be invasive, but you probably come from the northern countries. There, culture completely rejects boasting or superiority. On the contrary, they appreciate humility and going almost unnoticed while doing great things.

Don't get me wrong, I also appreciate these things, but sometimes you don't think superiority is just a fact? And what harm would there be to be proud of it?

I know the questions are quite complex, and you don't have to feel compelled to answer them. But I would be genuinely curious to elaborate on your point of view.

4

u/spitfiredeluxe Sep 05 '26

Pirating doesn't make us superior bro

2

u/pattern-recognizer Sep 05 '26

Sorry, it was not referred to the superiority of pirating. It was more about the general concept of superiority.

OhHa eMule still alive?
Ya kids know this?

394

u/Cruffe Sep 04 '26

Replace emule with *arr stack and Jellyfin/Plex, then we're talking a functional replacement for a modern pirate.

59

u/Otherwise_Task7876 Sep 04 '26

Already have a Jellyfin *arr stack! Plus some extra QoL things for me. It is amazing.

32

u/jsomby Sep 05 '26

Imagine dropping dead and still all your friends will get their favorite shows and movies just because you automated things so well and it's stable.

12

u/hannes3120 Sep 05 '26

How are people automating disk-space usage though?

Having to keep an eye on that and from time to time archive some shows/movies to another disk to free up space is the most manual work I have these days

9

u/jsomby Sep 05 '26

With current prices I can't get more space so it's manual task for me when alert comes up (around 2%).

6

u/Advanced-Feedback867 Sep 05 '26

How are people automating disk-space usage though?

I encode everything in my library to av1 and delete every torrent that didn't had any activity in the last 3 months.

2

u/Otherwise_Task7876 Sep 05 '26

I would assume people either auto-delete shows/movies after a certain period of not being watched. Though I'm not sure the program people would use. There are very likely plenty available though.

1

u/SoulReaver9510 Sep 05 '26

Maintainerr for me

3

u/Otherwise_Task7876 Sep 05 '26

Ahh unfortunately I have no friends to give access too anyway XD. Well 1, but he's to technologically illiterate to use it properly. Though I do have it setup to be automated using Jellyseerr, so a non-admin can make a request for a show/movie to auto-download.

I also made it be able to survive a full power off and power on and everything automatically starts (which was much of a bigger pain in the ass than you'd think). That was mostly due to power outages though.

5

u/KidAnon94 Sep 04 '26

Literally me with Jellyfin (though I also use Riven for debrid support for those obscure titles that just don't have many seeders). I also have a Toonami Aftermath stream going from it too which is neat. I do have local channel streams too (used FastChannels docker container), but that's less cool.

14

u/Saw_Boss Sep 04 '26

The *arr stack is just silly. I only use Radarr, Sonarr and Prowlarr... But I can just pick a series or film and it'll do all the work. I set mine to download everything overnight, so it'll all there the next day in the right place, visible with metadata in Jellyfin.

It's ridiculous.

6

u/Cruffe Sep 04 '26

By *arr stack I mostly mean Radarr, Sonarr and Prowlarr, although more can be added to it for other media.

I share my Jellyfin with a few close friends and family so I use Seerr as well to give them a nice platform to request exactly the content they want. It talks with Radarr and Sonarr to grab the content which in turn just shows up in Jellyfin without any manual intervention. I even use Seerr myself because it's a decent platform just to explore what's out there.

The free open source automation tools for this are actually insanely good. So good that once set up correctly even an idiot can use them, the barrier is setting them up correctly though.

1

u/UnclearMango5534 Sep 05 '26

Is there any good tutorial you followed?

3

u/Cruffe Sep 05 '26

Personally I just set up each service one by one by reading through their respective documentations. I have heard good things about TRaSH-Guides though, being beginner friendly for setting it all up together in a single step by step guide.

4

u/NerdGuy13 Sep 04 '26

I was wondering what emule was. I hadn't heard of that one before.

14

u/Cruffe Sep 04 '26

Then you're not old enough to know. It was a P2P file sharing program along with Kazaa, Limewire and a bunch of other similar alternatives. Sort of like torrenting, but everything built into the program. You could search, download and easily share your own content by adding it to the network, all from within the program.

Sounds good until you realized half of it was porn or malware because it was totally unmoderated...

15

u/TurtleFetus Sep 05 '26

Real old here: back in my day we called it eDonkey2000

4

u/Cruffe Sep 05 '26

I remember that one as well. Damn, I'm getting old...

9

u/NerdGuy13 Sep 05 '26

I'm 43 and started off my life of piracy ripping CDs to convert them into MP3s and using Napster....

But I will take that as a compliment because I've been feeling very old lately. 😂

7

u/Cruffe Sep 05 '26

I'm 35 and my first experience with piracy was my aunt copying a casette tape with music. Yes, it was kid's music because I was a small kid at that point.

1

u/dhondooo Sep 05 '26

Was introduced to DC++ in uni back in 2015 and I think they still have it

2

u/lookamazed Sep 06 '26

People hate on Emby but they don’t ask questions.

6

u/rmbarrett Sep 04 '26

Don't forget to add 2 dozen docker images for things that run fine on bare metal. And double VPNs including some that are known for selling data. And ChatGPT to make it all happen. Let's get real.

19

u/StatedFailure Sep 05 '26

Just because something can run on bare metal doesn't mean it should.

-1

u/rmbarrett Sep 05 '26

I mean, if it does, and there are official packages, and it upgrades nicely, and stores config in an easy to access place, it's hard to justify wasting time configuring it to run in a container unless you are deploying it to multiple machines regularly. Is that what most self hosters are doing? Or are they trying to learn to be self sufficient? What should be run in a container? Or, rather, why shouldn't you run something on bare metal? Explain it to us.

6

u/Rexysmexy Sep 05 '26

Everyone has their preference, bare metal or containerization. I personally find containerization more convenient.

1

u/-LongRodVanHugenDong Sep 05 '26

It's my understanding that Dockerized apps provide more security when facing the web. I run almost everything in docker through Ubuntu server VM. Feels more organized to me, since it all lives in appdata. I don't have to hunt around for files or clean anything up when I delete.

I guess the only real reason is security for me.

1

u/Cruffe Sep 05 '26

The box I host this stuff on is using Linux, containerization on Linux is equivalent to running on bare metal in terms of performance. There's no emulation or translation. The case is different for Windows though, which does emulate a Linux environment when running Docker.

I prefer Docker Compose, it couldn't be easier to store ALL the config files in an easy to access place. I can mount whatever directory I want them in.

I don't know what you waste your time on with this, but in my case it's copy/paste some Docker Compose example and make a few small edits to it before running docker compose up -d. It pulls the image and brings up the container. Takes a few minutes and I'm not even some Docker wizard who knows all the ins and outs of it.

It's convenient, particularly on Linux! It's easier to downgrade a version of a Docker image than to fuck around with the system package manager to do it, in case there is a bug with a particular version that affects me.

Ultimately it's just more convenient and I do not understand your argument for how it's so inconvenient, unless you just don't really understand how containers work.

5

u/daubious Sep 05 '26

This sounds like a take from someone who doesnt actually homelab (perhaps you have, idk). But Docker containers simply make installing services easier, one VPN is plenty (in my experience), and ChatGPT is not necessary. I would rather a VPN company sell my data than get in legal trouble.

0

u/rmbarrett Sep 05 '26

I have had a home lab since the 1990s. I used to have to compile drivers and more. But I will admit I'm a bit of an exception. I was testing ultra low latency audio and Video streaming from my home web server as a partner developer through Macromedia when the average user was still using dialup. There is no need for a vpn here in Canada. If it only comes as a container, what choice do I have? I'm not shitting on the people doing it. I'm shitting on the echo chamber that is pushing people to fast answers and solutions without providing the foundation. You're right that it's convenient and easy. You can even set up a home server remotely through your phone with minimal typing. It's nice the people are able to. But the knowledge is becoming lost. Inaccessible while remaining in plain sight. I see people running single binaries in a container and struggling to set it up, such as torrent clients. I regularly help friends and colleagues with their home servers and have to turn off multiple layers of VPNs and proxies that ChatGPT told them to use. It's relevant to this sub because all of us have followed tutorials at one point without understanding what we were doing. The thirst for content makes us do that. And it can be used to manipulate us too. Or lead us to make mistakes and not know how to fix them.

1

u/Johnny_Trousersnake Sep 05 '26

Wats *arr

12

u/Cruffe Sep 05 '26

Prowlarr: Connects to indexers for both torrents and Usenet. Basically the search engine to find content across multiple indexers. Basically you don't even have to go to the torrent websites, Prowlarr automatically searches and grabs the results.

Radarr: Automates finding movies, using Prowlarr as a backend to search all the indexers simultaneously, grabs the result best matching a defined profile for what you want, sending it over to the download client (like qBittorrent) and then adding it neatly organized into your media library.

Sonarr: Same as Radarr, but for series. Auto downloads new episodes of a series as soon as they're out.

The libraries automatically organized by these are compatible with Jellyfin and Plex, you almost never have to manually manage any files to have it show up properly.

Together it provides a self-hosted solution where you just add the content you want and it does all the rest for you. Finds it, downloads it and adds it to your library completely automatically.

Add Seerr into the mix and you have a single platform for finding any movies or series you may want. Basically click the thing you want, wait for download to finish and it's there on your own personal streaming platform (Jellyfin or Plex).

A bit of a hassle to set up if you don't know much about that sort of thing, but super easy to use.

1

u/doct0rdo0m Sep 05 '26

I was using pyMedusa up till like a month ago but after so much time of it being broken over and over again, I went with arr and haven't looked back. works so well.

1

u/Ieatsand97 Sep 05 '26

Plex is deep on the enshitification rabbit hole so its kinda garbage.

1

u/Cruffe Sep 05 '26

Yeah, I started with Jellyfin and it does what I want it to do while being open-source. If there is a good open-source alternative I always go for that. I just mentioned Plex because people might know about that one and not about Jellyfin, I would recommend Jellyfin.

Not just stremio RD?

1

u/Apart_Thing_5569 Sep 07 '26

What are those?

2

u/Cruffe Sep 07 '26

Jellyfin is a media server solution. You run the server on a PC pointing to a media library of movies and shows. You connect to the server using a client app or a browser, it then presents you with an interface similar to most other streaming platforms. What it shows is everything in your media library, when you play it the server streams it to the client. It has the expected streaming platform features, like saving where you stopped watching so you can continue later, changing subtitles and audio tracks and presenting the next episode of a show on the front page.

Plex is the proprietary alternative to Jellyfin, but you have to pay to access all the features. Jellyfin is completely free and open source. They do the same thing, being a media server with a streaming platform frontend. I'm not a fan of Plex.

The *arr apps are a collection of apps ending in arr, hence the name, that automates pirating media. This includes finding the content, downloading it and neatly organizing the files. The most used ones are Prowlarr, Radarr and Sonarr.

Prowlarr handles searching and finding torrents. You can hook it up to multiple indexers (websites where you can find torrents). It can search all of them simultaneously and present the results conveniently in one place.

Radarr handles movies and provides a nice and simple interface to search any movie. It integrates with Prowlarr to search for torrents for the movies you add. It also integrates nicely with qBittorrent, so if a matching torrent is found Radar grabs it and sends it over to qBittorrent to download. When the download completes it can hardlink the media into a neatly organized media library that can be directly used by Jellyfin. It can do all of this automatically, so what you do is click the button to add the movie and it shows up on Jellyfin once download finishes. Assuming of course there is a torrent of it on any of the configured indexers.

Sonarr works the same way, but it's for shows rather than movies. It can auto download new episodes as a torrent of it becomes available. Basically you can set it to get an entire season of something before it's even released and it will get it for you as soon as it's available. Like, you can go sleep and wake up to fresh episodes ready to play on Jellyfin.

Btw, you can also add movies to Radarr that hasn't released yet and similarly have them automatically download the moment it becomes available.

That's the setup I have. I add what I want and it just shows up on my own personal streaming platform if or when it's available. I run it on an old PC that I leave on 24/7. I have the Jellyfin app straight on my TV.

It can be a bit of hassle to set up if you haven't dabbled in hosting stuff before, but once it's up and running it's super easy to use and extremely convenient. A lot more convenient than manually searching various torrent sites, manually adding the torrents to qBittorrent and playing them in a normal media player on the PC you downloaded it to. Playing it on any other usually involves moving the files around on a USB drive or other inconvenient methods. Jellyfin can stream to a bunch of different devices, like any PC on your LAN, any phone/tablet, a lot of smart TVs and you can even set it up to stream across the internet so can watch from anywhere.

To sum it all up, they're solutions to making piracy very convenient.

I got a 32tb drive before prices went tits up. I hope it lasts a loooong time

32

u/Draminian Sep 04 '26

I built a 90TB NAS (with redundancy) near the end of 2024 when the two 16 TB drives in my PC were about 80% full. I was worried one could die and take its contents with it. I'm now around 50% full on the NAS and hoping HDD prices come back down to earth before I need to start upgrading drives.

1

u/Pootisman16 Sep 06 '26

Is there a good, easy guide on how to do that on Linux?

-3

u/mofugginrob Sep 04 '26

You don't need the entire Internet, bro. JK you probably download remux.

4

u/Draminian Sep 05 '26

I don't know what a remux is. When I download a show or movie, if it's something where the visuals aren't anything special, I get the highest seeded 1080p file with the most reasonable file size. If the visuals do matter, then I grab the highest seeded 4k version. I used to do 4k for everything that had it available, but realized regular HD is totally fine for something like Slow Horses.

0

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '26

2

u/Aragornargonian Sep 05 '26

I'm not gonna lie I sprang for a 26tb drive and dropped almost 600 on it. Yeah it's a lot, like way too much BUT it should last long enough.

3

u/Cruffe Sep 04 '26

I got a 20TB literally a week before the first price increases. It's about half full now, I've still got time. I use private trackers so I'd rather keep permaseeding everything I can, but if prices don't normalize before it's full I will have to let some of it go unfortunately.

2

u/PartialChicken_Wing Sep 05 '26

I have some shucked drives in my NAS that are almost at a decade. If one fails I'll have to get the knee pads out.

48

u/75percent-juice Sep 04 '26
