Self-Promotion I made an open source, self hostable pirated movie streaming site with thousands of movies at the age of 14.

I made this site and hosted it with minimal ads that give all profit to the suppliers of the movie.
The site is completely open source, the github has a guide for self hosting and there are no ads apart from ones that I cant remove.

I made it at the age of 14 for a hackathon called Hack Club Arcade

Github: https://github.com/IM-THE-GRASS/movie-streaming-site
(If you could give it a star I would be eternally grateful 😊)

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 25 '24

tysm lol

140

u/OG-CJ-GSF Aug 25 '24

Now u just need to add tv shows and anime and its a god tier website for any Pirate😂👍

78

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 25 '24

I think I might be able to do TV shows, I'm not quite sure if I can do anime tho

381

u/rierrium Aug 25 '24

I used to cry watching cartoons at 14 bruh. Starred

52

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 25 '24

lol ty for the star !!

12

u/nickmaran Aug 25 '24

Yes, yes. I stopped at 14. I can assure you that it never happened again

7

u/kyoer Aug 25 '24

No shit 😂 what's OP doing making all this at 14. Good job though OP

2

u/Particular-Doubt-566 Aug 26 '24

Futurama. Jurassic Bark. Cried for both my dead dog and Benders jealousy of fry's dead dog. Robots have feels too.

28

u/EventPuzzleheaded129 Aug 25 '24

gotta give you a star! ima fork it incase it gets banned, hope thats fine with you

29

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 25 '24

Yeah ofc! I encourage people to fork it, modify it and self host it, that's why its open source after all

9

u/EventPuzzleheaded129 Aug 25 '24

thank you! great website as well!

80

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '24

Forked it in case the original gets taken down (you never know with those big companies like MS)

61

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 25 '24

I also happen to have a local copy and an off-site one on the server it's hosted on lol

24

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '24

yeah I'm probably gonna clone it directly to my home server, maybe one day I (or someone else) patches in SMB support for local files. I have many movies on my NAS

15

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 25 '24

that's so cool, I always wanted to make a NAS for movies but I never had a spare computer for it

1

u/SirAlex505 Aug 26 '24

What does “forked” mean 😅

9

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '24

It is a copy of the original repo, most often used to make your changes on your copy and then ask the original developer to pull your code back into the original repo (thats called a pull request)

0

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '24

How to fork?

2

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '24

You click the Fork button (have you ever even used GitHub?)

9

u/watermelonpiss Aug 25 '24

Redirect are annoying, ad blocker does help a little

24

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 25 '24

I might add a source with no ads in the future but the quality on that source is way worse

4

u/maatemmer Aug 25 '24

Dude seriously, depending on where your from be very careful. Some countries will seriously go after you for this type of stuff. Not trying to scare you, if you get caught it's not gonna be as bad because your under 18 but still.

2

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 25 '24

im in canada and idrk the laws here but if anybody tells me to take it down i def will, also this site is just a wrapper for https://moviesapi.club/ and im not distributing them so i hope i dont get in too much legal trouble

1

u/maatemmer Aug 26 '24

You could be in legal trouble maybe idk the laws in Canada. Its always good to learn about Opsec various youtubers have great opsec tutorials.

11

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '24

so you basically made a wrapper

10

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 25 '24

yeah or else i would be afraid of legal action 😅

-9

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '24

Ofcourse. I also made things like that with javascript and python at your age. It is fun. However, have you tried delving into serious programming like C or C++?

2

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 26 '24

I've used some c and a little bit of c++before, im just not sure what to make with the languages except for stuff with Arduino

10

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '24

bro for god sake, what do you mean by "serious programming". this is a 14 y.o kid which did something 99% of people can't at their age. please be a bit encouraging.

5

u/guserrrr Aug 26 '24

My guy what is this attitude. Show us some of your serious programming. Not implementations. Real work

3

u/greenbeforeblue Aug 25 '24

Op I tried on my computer with Firefox and it plays but after a short period of time it says, This video file can’t be played. (Error Code: 233011)

1

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 25 '24

have you tried refreshing? that happened to me one when i was testing it on the Iron Man movie and I just refreshed and it worked

1

u/greenbeforeblue Aug 25 '24

I refreshed but if I hit continue from where I left off it gives the error code again. If I refresh and start over it works. It seems to only be giving the error if I scroll to a later part in the movie.

9

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 25 '24

actually i managed to reproduce it and I think this might just be a bad internet connection or the server being a bit overloaded considering theres 2k people who went on the site and ive never tested it before with any more than 1 lol

5

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 25 '24

I was able to refresh tho and it worked fine so idk

2

u/dwehlen Aug 26 '24

The ol' Reddit hug-o-death, UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL!

Give it a few hours, it'll clear itself!

3

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 25 '24

huh thats really odd, i dont think i can fix because idrk how to reproduce the issue

4

u/Strong_Magician_3320 Aug 25 '24

This happens a lot with me with other streaming sites like bingewatch, hdtoday, and 1hd. Every time it happens it's only caused by bad internet (for me)

11

u/NickyNice Aug 25 '24

I'm confused about the ads. You are using them as a way to claim that the producers are paid for all content watched? Then you recommend using ublock origin to avoid the intrusive ads.

But if your site has ads then it is not generating the producers revenue it is producing YOU revenue and that seems like a huge legal issue to me.

42

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 25 '24

No, its not providing me or the producers any revenue, the revenue goes to the person who recorded and uploaded the video, because i am getting the videos from https://moviesapi.club/ and they are the ones who provide the video and the ads, also I'm going to remove that statement abt ublcok since I would perfer you to watch the ads so we can keep these sources free.

129

u/hippopotam00se Aug 25 '24

I've been trying to get every Stephen King movie, and this is the first site I've seen out of at least 2 dozen that had the night flier. Amazing site, especially for being only 14. Would love an option to download the movies, but still great as it is.

57

u/2fast4u180 Aug 25 '24

Lets keep this kid out of trouble. Im sure theyre smart but this competition is tied to his or her name

19

u/hippopotam00se Aug 25 '24

They've done nothing wrong; Another site handles receiving the IMDB id and returning an embedded video of it.

75

u/Elegant-Lack-4483 Aug 25 '24

it looks cleaner than some paid streaming services nice job

23

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '24

Beautiful.

11

u/Fujinn981 Aug 26 '24

Becareful, companies may be after you for this. I hope you're taking good steps to hide who you are, or are in a country they can't reach you.

7

u/No_Room4359 Aug 25 '24

wow super cool im a little less and still only making basic ahh c stuff

13

u/the_psyche_wolf Aug 25 '24

hello, this is fbi. please open your door.

7

u/keypa_ Aug 25 '24

Damn man this looks hella good. It looks better than some paid websites. Hats off to you for doing it at 14 🙌. You deserve your stars on github and all my respect.

Again, freaking awesome! Keep going you're on the right track!

2

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '24

FBI here, what's your address? /s

Cool site!

2

u/scull-crusher Aug 25 '24

Woooo another Hack Clubber!!! Good job btw

2

u/Vicv_ Aug 25 '24

Looks really good. It still has that standard 3 popups in new tabs before you can start watching, but I was able to find a couple movies I usually Can't find on places like fmovies. Great job kid. Thank you !thanks

1

u/crowbayashi Aug 25 '24

Wow. Kudos. Thank you

There are subtitles when I have tested on my computer but I haven't really tested much on mobile so I may have overlooked some scaling issues, thank you for telling me about this.

1

u/janaxhell Aug 25 '24

Hi, congrats! It seems I have a too new version of the expected component:

ERROR: pip's dependency resolver does not currently take into account all the packages that are installed. This behaviour is the source of the following dependency conflicts.

twine 5.1.1 requires pkginfo<1.11, but you have pkginfo 1.11.1 which is incompatible.

2

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 25 '24

try doing it in a venv because it sounds like the packages are conflicting with packages already installed in your system. https://packaging.python.org/en/latest/guides/installing-using-pip-and-virtual-environments/ Heres a guide on how to use a venv

1

u/janaxhell Aug 25 '24

Thanks. Any chance you'll make a docker container version?

3

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 25 '24

I dont really know how to use docker lol, maybe someone else in the community could make one 😅

-2

u/Walter_HK Aug 25 '24 edited Aug 25 '24

That should take you all of like 30 seconds to do yourself. Ask ChatGPT and it’ll give you instructions in like 4 steps

Edit: shit if y’all wanna downvote I’ll do it to prove how easy it is

1

u/Craigg75 Aug 25 '24

Starred. Very good job

1

u/fojam Aug 25 '24

How are you able to host this without worrying about recourse? Are you doing anything to protect your own anonymity?

5

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 25 '24

I am hosting it on a server that is provided for free by hack club (the hackathon i mentioned in my post) for students and if someone tries to take legal action I will def take it down bcuz im not doing anything to protect my identity lol

but its open source so i bet another person will just pop up in my place and host it on a diffrent domain

1

u/ljmt Aug 25 '24

How do you give the profits to the movie suppliers? I’ve been curious how I could support movies without buying them for awhile now

2

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 25 '24

By movie suppliers i mean the people who recorded the movie, not the movie makers. I dont know how you could do that

1

u/ljmt Aug 25 '24

Oh gotcha. Cheers

1

u/Zahradn1k Aug 25 '24

How did you make the website?

2

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 25 '24

I made the frontend and backend in python using a framework called Reflex ( https://reflex.dev ) and i ported a few components from react like the slider on the homepage

1

u/T5-R Aug 25 '24

One bug report for you.

Android running Firefox.

When you close Firefox while a video is playing, it continues to play in the background, with no way to switch it off other than restarting the phone.

1

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 25 '24

oh that doesnt happen on my phone... I also use android with firefox so i dont think this is an issue with the site

1

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 26 '24

damn bro how did you make this all on mobile? what apps did you use? also the site is super impressive considering it's made fully on mobile

1

u/ItzNesbro Aug 26 '24

Thanks. i made using online ide called https://gitpod.io and i had this external keyboard and mouse and i used that for more better coding experiance

1

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 26 '24

have you heard of hack club? sometimes they give away free stuff to student programmers like laptops and you rlly seem like you need it lol

1

u/ItzNesbro Aug 26 '24

Btw can you also help me? Im trying to get into the hack club thing so can you help me with it

1

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 26 '24

oh yeah ofc what do you need help with?

1

u/ThemoocowYT Aug 26 '24

That's awesome! What inspired you to make it?

1

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 26 '24

Wish. This is pretty cool. One thing. I will suggest is to figure out a way to optimize the javascript on this. I tested if out but it seemed slow to build the GUI and stuff. Im not a dev so I dong know but I would presume its either because of server load or seeing to load a lot of javascript crap because its rather pretty.

1

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 26 '24

its def because of server load, the server has to deal with multiple thousand users now when before i only tested with one lol

1

u/Aggressive_Testicles Aug 27 '24

how did you host it with your domain? can you explain?

1

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 27 '24

For the domain i bought it with Namecheap and switched the DNS to cloudflare, then i made a couldflare argo tunnel and made the tunnel point to the port that the server is running on

1

u/ioshta Aug 29 '24

I am assuming for accessing stuff like this the usual protection is advised, vpn ad blockers right?

1

u/IM_THE_GRASS Aug 30 '24

ad blockers sure but you don't really need a VPN because it's not torrenting

1

u/jacman480p Jan 15 '25

I think it's down now :(
It was working just a couple of weeks ago

1

u/IM_THE_GRASS Jan 16 '25

yea I might make an updated version soon because I checked and everything's broken + my domain is about to expire, so just wait until after final exams and I'll make a rewritten version

This is pretty amazing. At just 14?? I can’t wait to see what else you create. This is really amazing on a mobile device. How on earth is there zero buffering for a 1.5 hour movie? So many streaming sites’ mobile versions I usually get 14 ads popping up, 5 windows that open, and awful stream quality, etc. This is awesome dude.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '24

I've been testing it, it works amazing! Keep the work up :)

1

u/TrulyChxse Aug 25 '24

Amazing work!

1

u/Luckydude717 Aug 25 '24

You made a pirated movie streaming site for a hackathon? Lol

1

But stil good job man

1

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '24

cool

1

u/New_Personality_151 Aug 25 '24

What an amazing idea and great that you did it for your age! Can you also put all Louis de Funes movies on there? I’m searching everywhere, but other then what YTS has to offer it is very hard to find stuff

1

u/potato_and_nutella Aug 26 '24

I made one when I was 15 but yours is so much cleaner than mine

1

u/BinkDonks Aug 26 '24

Make sure to consult a lawyer doing this type of stuff! Don't get slapped with a lawsuit. The companies will do it.

1

u/AlienMoon Aug 26 '24

Congrats, it'll be nice if it gives all the details you get in PLEX.
I like to see the cast and the ability to click on any cast member, bringing up a list of all the movies they've made,
Pretty neat work through, Nice one :)

Added to my GitHub watch list :)
