Defective G.Skill return turned credit card dispute with Newegg
I’m sharing this as a warning for anyone buying expensive components from Newegg and as a reference for how they handle defective items. I’ll update this later once my credit card dispute actually finishes.
The Setup & The Defect
Late last month, I ordered a 96GB G.Skill DDR5 kit from Newegg for a gaming and AI build. It wasn't cheap.
Soon after building, I started getting random crashes. Debugging hardware is stressful, especially with return windows closing fast. Tests on the RAM didn't show much, so I did a swap with my wife's PC, which I built earlier this year and is completely stable.
I put the 96GB kit in her PC and her RAM in mine. Almost immediately, my PC stabilized, and hers started crashing just like mine. The problem followed the sticks on a known working system. It was definitely defective RAM.
The Mistake (My Warning to You)
Here is my biggest warning: Do not touch the stickers on your RAM.
When installing, I peeled the serial number stickers off because I was worried the heat would melt the adhesive. I didn’t throw them away. I put them safely inside the original box. I had all the original packaging, but Newegg (and manufacturers) are very strict about detached labels. Just leave them on.
The Return & Communication Breakdown
Since Newegg didn't have replacement stock, I chose a refund. I was well within the 30 day "hassle free" window, so I thought it would be an easy process.
Here is the timeline: * October 14: Newegg received the returned package. * October 21: After a week of silence, they finally emailed me questioning the detached serial number stickers.
I called support hoping to clear it up. They told me the returns department doesn't have a phone number. You can only respond to their email and wait. I told them over the phone that if I didn't get a reply the next business day, I would do a chargeback. I followed up by email again 5 days later (3 business days). Nothing. Complete silence.
Taking over a week to process a defective return under 30 days is ridiculous. It feels like mentioning a chargeback made them just pause my return and ignore me.
The Credit Card Dispute
Since communication went dark, I am forced to begin the dispute process.
I understand packaging policies, but contract law still exists. If you buy a product, it should work. Missing packaging or detached stickers doesn't change the fact that the product was defective. A retailer’s internal policy doesn't just erase basic consumer rights.
My goal here is to give y'all another point of reference for Newegg returns. I’ll update how my dispute shakes out!
