Is it the TV or my eyes? Soap Opera effect/cheap look occurs more often now
Hey, I'm still watching on my Panasonic Viera TXP42V. Recently watching Movies or Shows feels off for me. A lot of the content I watched, looked cheap and the off frame rate. I always used it in THX Mode, 24p, frame creation turned off (per input channel) etc. The last 5 years or so, I only used a FireTV Stick to watch either, Netflix, Prime, Disney or Paramount. Recently i got some Blu-rays, and since my old Panasonic BR Player died, I bought a new one, the Panasonic DP-UB154.
It immediately looked like crap, everything i watched was heavily affected by the soap opera effect. So I updatet the Player, likewise the TV, resetted both, not solving the issue. Then, after days of troubleshooting, I turned 24p in the Blurayplayer OFF - and voila - it works. Movies got the same smooth cinema look again. so far so good. When I then watched something via stick, the framerate looks off, and it has that cheap vibe again. I went into the dev-mode of the TV Stick and checked the stream specs. It says the Film is in 24p. The info label of the HDMI Port tells me, it's running in 1080p/60hz. I think this si because the stick always runs in 60 Hz. But it is set to adaptive framerate, based on the content.
For Some movies, it looks great, likr real 24p, others look like 30 or 50. New shows mostly look very cheap. However, my wife doesn'r see it at all. For her it only becomes apparent, when I switch intelligent frame creation on. But for me, it looks like this, albeit not so extreme, even on THX 24fps.
Is the TV dying? Or is it my eyes? I even notice this effect in the Cinema or at my friends house, when we watch via DLP Projector. It's seems to occur more often recently, and wasn'T such a big Problem 10 years ago, or maybe 5. I'm also sensitive to Laser speckle noise. My Wife and my Buddy see coherent and even bright surfaces; to me it's a grainy mess. Is it me, or are movies becoming worse in Quality?
What can I do?
