If you are this person I saw walking up Headington hill this morning in armour I didn’t have the courage to ask you what the reason was?

Firstly mad respect but also secondly I curious to know what you were up to?
And follow up question: the electric bike implies you either weren’t expecting to walk or the bike couldn’t take the weight?

If you are out there. Please let us know how to emulate your swag

For anyone in Oxford struggling to build a social circle: highly recommend checking out Round Table

• Upvotes

Living in Oxford as an adult can make it surprisingly tough to build a decent group of mates outside of work or uni. I was in a proper routine rut until I ended up joining Round Table locally a while back.

Having a regular group of lads to meet up with for pub nights, random weekend activities, and local events has been a total game changer for my social life.

Just curious how other people around here manage to make proper friends? Have you found joining local clubs actually works, or are there other events in Oxford people recommend?

What is living in this part of South Hinksey like in the Winter/Rainy months?

• Upvotes

I mean the part of South Hinksey that is a small village on the Oxford side of the A34 (within the ring road), the other side of the train tracks to New Hinksey.

Just from maps it looks to be quite isolated, only one way out by car (A34 slip) or bike (devil’s backbone). If you have a bike can you still get into town easily in winter/if it’s flooded? Thanks ☺️

Oxford Hospitals Staff Accommodation Experiences

Hello, I have fortunately received an offer to work in the John Radcliff Hospital and I will be moving to Oxford, does anyone have any experience with the hospital accommodation for staff moving to the area? Where do healthcare workers usually live? Are there any places to avoid if walking home late after a shift? Would appreciate any advice from fellow hospital staff as I don't know anyone in Oxford

Thank you

Hello all,
Which streets/ spots are the best to go trick or treating? We are going for the first time with our two years old, he is extremely excited and keeps practicing saying “trick or treat”(:
Ideally close to city centre or easily accessible by bus. Any help would be appreciated

Club (plush) entry times

Repost because my original post was on the Oxford Uni sub -

My ticket (for plush) says entry before 11pm, but I'm wondering how hard and fast they actually take this rule? It seems like most people show up later regardless, but I could be wrong!

First time ever in Oxford: the Rāmāyaṇa live on stage this Diwali (Sat 7 Nov, St John's)

Post image
4 Upvotes

Oxford India Society presents, This Diwali we're putting on a full-length stage play of the Rāmāyaṇa, the ancient Indian epic with all Oxfords student cast.

It's the first time ever that it has been staged as a play in Oxford!

It follows Hanumān, who meets Rāma, the exiled prince of Ayodhyā, and helps him rescue Sītā from Rāvaṇa, the king of Laṅkā. Along the way he discovers the path of dharma and the powers he forgot as a child. There's music, action and drama, and the cast are all Oxford students who've been rehearsing for months. (I'm playing Vāyu Dev and Sugrīva!)

Details

* When: Saturday 7 November (the eve of Diwali), 11:30 AM or 5:30 PM, about 2 hours

* Where: Garden Quad Auditorium, St John's College, St Giles', OX1 3JP

* Language: Hindi with English surtitles, so you don't need to know any Hindi

* Tickets: Free, but please book so we know numbers: https://ois-presents-ramayana-epic-stage-play.eventbrite.co.uk

Families and kids are welcome. You don't need to know the story beforehand; it's a great introduction if you've never seen it.

Happy to answer any questions in the comments!

Can anyone help me remember the name/location of this building?

Edit: SOLVED! It was the Jacqueline Du Pré building at St Hilda’s. I love Reddit, this has been annoying me for so long.

I’m really into mid-20th century architecture and interior design, and am trying to remember the location of a building with a beautiful interior. But my memory is VERY hazy.

So…I went to a concert here (a violinist I think) many years ago. All I remember is that the lobby was a large atrium with lots of wood, very 1960s. Eames style furniture and classic mid-century lighting. The door to the room where the concert was held was to the right of the reception desk. I think it was somewhere in the vicinity of Magdalen. Any help would be massively appreciated!

Hypothetically, which Oxford river/body of water would you use for drinking?

This is more of a thought experiment but let's say all public services collapse including provision of clean drinkable tap water. You have a camping water filtration system (water filter plus purification drops). From where in and around Oxford would you get your water?

Looking at maps etc, the upper Cherwell would seem a good place. Or Farmoor reservoir.

Any churches with young working adults?

We're looking for churches in the area (not in Oxford City Centre) where there are ministries for young working adults. Any pointers will be appreciated. Thank you.

Recommendations for pubs in Witney?

Hi, me and my partner just moved into the Witney area. I want to have some smaller bday meetup with a few friends in one of the pubs on Saturday. Does anyone have a recommendation for a pub with a nice atmosphere that's not super loud. Must have Guinness on draft and a decent selection of non alcoholic drinks as some of my friends don't drink.

Thanks!

Botley Road…again

I’m reasonably certain that the issue on Botley Road is the series of uncontrolled junctions at the retail parks where traffic outbound from Oxford stops to let traffic cross into or exit the retail parks.

Leaving Oxford now, once past Aldi the traffic clears up completely. Inbound it is free flowing. Yes there is more traffic outbound given the filters but driver behaviour and road layout is causing the issue not necessarily traffic volume.

Men’s haircut in Oxford

Hey there. I can’t get to my normal men’s stylist this week and was wondering what salon you all recommend? I was looking at Toni&Guy, which I’ve used elsewhere before but I’m sure there are alternatives? Please share and save me from going into London this week… please!

Swan stuck on A34 South just past Peartree junction (above the godstow road)

Did anyone see the swan stuck on the edge of the road? Is it still there? I drove past about 30 mins ago and tried to find somewhere to stop but there was too much traffic. I am not sure whether to call 111. The wildlife rescue said they wouldn’t be able to get it :(
