Bot Commands!

Hi r/NoPoo! I've been learning more about AutoMod and had an idea that I think will really help the community: Bot Commands!

The basic idea is that you type a simple command and the bot replies to the comment where the command was used with frequently used information. I've created a small collection and used them already, and plan on expanding them to replace the clipboard I currently use to do all of this. I've made a new wiki page that will contain all of the ones available here:

Bot Commands for r/NoPoo helpers

Have fun helping!

Oily buildup on scalp - 3 months no poo

I have not used any conventional shampoo or conditioner for three months. For majority of the time, I have been using egg yolks and honey about weekly / bi weekly (whenever my hair needs it), and in between, I will usually do an ACV rinse, but I am trying to ween myself off of having to use ACV in between yolk washes. I have medium to thick straight hair.

I actually started no poo because I wanted to live a more sustainable lifestyle but I have also just had a really greasy scalp and had tried everything except for no poo to help with my greasy scalp. Often I would wash my hair and it would be greasy the same afternoon, but now after my egg washes, I can go three days or so confidently without it being greasy.

However in the last few weeks, I have had a lot of buildup. It is thick and oily, and is generally not flaky. Before washes and most days I will massage my scalp with a wooden brush to try and remove the buildup, but it doesn’t really seem to help.
The buildup can actually cause some very slight pain, however it is not visible at all until it is scratched up.

I am thinking that it is just oil buildup, but I’m not sure and would love to hear what others have to say / how you think I can manage this.

Why is my hair oily

I have no idea why my hair has suddenly started getting so oily just 15 hours after taking a shower.

I’ve even stopped oiling my hair because I’m worried it might make the problem worse.

The condition my hair used to be in after 2 days without washing is now exactly how it looks just 15–16 hours after washing. Literally, it hasn’t even been 24 hours since I washed my hair, yet it looks and feels like I haven’t washed it in 2 whole days.

This has never happened to me before, and I have no idea what’s causing it. Has anyone else experienced this? how can I fix it?

Reports on Flakes/Scalp Issues 1 week only water and scalp is no longer extremely flaky

One week in and my scalp issues are pretty much gone. There’s still some flakes here and there but for the most part they’ve cleared. I did no shampoo aside from getting my haircut for a long time and could never quite get rid of the flakes no matter what I tried, but I never tried brushing my hair with a pin brush and that seems to do the trick. I’ve been brushing it thoroughly once in the morning and once at night and rinsing my hair after while massaging my scalp with my finger tips gently, but thoroughly.

My one question though, and the reason I come on here:

My hair has felt surprisingly dry in this first week, which is the opposite of what I was expecting. Usually it gets super oily and then regulates a little bit, but this time it’s been mostly dry with minimal oil production. Do you think this is a good sign or a bad sign?

Replacement for J.R.LIGGETT'S Shampoo Bar Original Formula?

I haven't tried all that many different brands. I tried out a bunch of JR's scents years ago when it was more affordable, and only the Original Formula perfectly matched my hair needs.

(Also, Broo Bourbon & Spice was great, but they stopped making bars ☹️ )

I'm hoping to find a bar that works just like either of these bars that isn't so expensive!

Anyone here LOVE Original Formula and have another brand that also works for you??

Thanks in advance!

Can someone help me confirm whether what I have is fungal dandruff specifically?

I have been on no poo for 2-3 weeks now. I use egg to wash my hair. This photo is unshowered and unwashed, so ignore the grease.

I have used ACV twice in the past few weeks, but perhaps I need to use it more

Reports on Method/Technique Application/AMOUNT for ACV rinse, herbal tea rinse, etc

I've been going through the guide, articles, etc (what a helpful, yet overwhelming, amount of info! thank you!) and can't seem to find info on what I'm sure is common sense to other people here.

When using, say, an ACV rinse... do I spray this on with a bottle? Dump it out from a cup? Use a washcloth? If I have a recipe making a cup total, is that meant to last 3-7 times/daily use of a week, or meant to be used in a single cup/dump? I'm worried that the spray bottle with ACV in it is making acne around that area worse, and it's also hard not to spray it in/around toddler's face.

Are "herbal rinses" any different? Like is it really just 'brew a cup of tea, maybe take some sips, then dump it on your hair, the whole cup of tea"? Or are you meant to stretch a cup over 3-7 showers or longer etc etc.

I have no idea of the scale here, especially as it's such a different texture than a 'normal' shampoo/conditioner. Please help me figure this out. Thank you!

Also: my (wavy/curly depending on location and... mood, traditionally) hair looked BETTER during the first 7 days of the transition. Greasy at times, which I hated, but I had these glorious curls. Now the grease is mostly gone. I'm losing a lot less hair. Things are great... but the curls are mostly gone. I was initially using a castile diluted shampoo, then an ACV rinse. I've recently stopped the Castile soap shampoo, using only the ACV rinse, and now my scale is no longer irriated/itchy and I'm also still less greasy hair-wise. I don't think Castile soap helped make it curly, especially since it was so irritating. I've never heard of anyone having better hair during the first 7 days! Was it just the extra hair oil/greasiness making it moisturized enough to be curly?!

Currently just doing an ACV/herb type rinse every 1-2 days. My suspicion is that my hair needs more moisture, and I also LOVE the idea of just boiling tea and using that in the rinse. I'm not clear on what that actually entails or looks like, though. I'm showering at this point mostly just because I like hot water (yeah, I know, hair works better with cold) and like long showers. Hair does look better after just water or rinse.

Have been doing this maybe 3ish weeks total? Hair is maybe high porosity, scalp/hair tends to be very sensitive and maybe dry (or oily? It's confusing, like my skin), and hair can range from straight to bouncy tight curls depending on climate/mood.

Bad odor from scalp/hair

I’ve been doing no shampoo for 3/4 years now. I shower my hair using just water. It doesn’t look greasy afterwards but maybe feels a bit waxy after drying. I’m fine with the look of it, however my family members say my hair smells really bad, like an ‘tramp’ or an ‘old man’. I’ve tried different methods: acv, baking soda, essential oils, aloe Vera, yogurt. But none fully get rid of the smell. I’m thinking I need to use a natural shampoo everyday instead of doing a cleanse once a week however all the natural shampoos i see contain ingredients which don’t seem natural. Can anyone recommend me a shampoo or home remedy that they use every time they shower. Most cleanses are time consuming as you need to part the hair to apply to the scalp compared to shampoo where it spreads evenly throughout hair and scalp.

What are the best natural alternatives to shampoo?

So I’ve been on this non toxic shampoo journey for over 10 years. I get an oily scalp after about 4 days depending on how much I sweat and that’s when I wash my hair.

I have washed my hair with non toxic shampoos, clays, soap nuts, baking soda with ACV rinse, Castile soap and shampoo bars.

Rhassoul clay was working great for a while and then stopped. Baking soda cleans my hair soooo well but using it often leaves my scalp feeling stripped. Soapnuts aren’t strong enough. Castile soap didn’t fully clean my hair either. It looked waxy once it dried.

I keep feeling like I’m meant to find something in nature that washes hair thoroughly without stripping my scalp.

I do live in an area with hard water and wonder if that has something to do with some things not working.

The only thing that works wonders is my ACV with hibiscus rinse but that’s used more like a conditioner. It leaves my hair soft and my scalp happy. It unfortunately doesn’t remove the oil and dirt.

Every time I go back to store bought shampoo and conditioner even if it’s considered natural, I’m left disappointed because my hair usually looks really frizzy and it doesn’t feel like how hair should feel.

So what are your best alternatives or suggestions that I can try. Thank you!

How do you keep hair clean during no poo?

I did it and I loved how my hair looked;

However my hair started falling off from excess sebum / dermatitis that I've never had before.

I've now taken medication shampoo to remove excess sebum, but I miss my no poo hair - I don't know how to look after it without it gaining trapped sebum again

I tried this no poo thing and it is going horrible

So, i watched some dude on youtube who was talking about haircare. He was giving a lot of advice and telling his story, and one of the things he mentioned was how he was losing hair, but after he stopped washing it with shampoo and switched to nopoo it reversed his hairloss and that the shampoo was causing his hair to fall out, something along those lines. i love my hair and that scared me a lot, so i decided to try it out. he did mention a transition period of 1 month from hair overproducing oil

well... it's been about 45 days since i stopped using shampoo, washing it only with water, and i do not see any kind of improvement. i look like im homeless because of my hair. its very greasy and looks terrible. i tried brushing oil out with my hairbrush manually. and that did not go anywhere either, my hairbrush got FULL of oil and i had to continuesly clean it to continue brushing my hair, and after brushing it for a while it did not improve much

at this point i am wondering if it even works and i think today i will probably return to shampoo. but i am scared of that thing that dude said about shampoo causing hairloss. does anybody know anything about that, and how to prevent losing hair? i personally have not experienced that yet but the mere possibility is quite frightening

FAQ How do you keep your hair smelling good?

reposting without naming the products i use

I’ve been looking into nopoo. I have long hair that smells really good from the products I use after showering
like dry hair oil (my hair loves this) and hair perfume. They add gloss and softness and smell delicious together.

I presume that as I wash without shampoo, I will also stop applying these products? If you also are a person that loves well-scented hair — what has been your solution?

Alternative Washing Why not baby powder?

I’ve used baby powder (when dry shampoo wasn’t accessible) for years before I ever learned of no poo. And I’ve not yet seen anyone in this community talk about using it (most I see report using flour).
Is there a reason?

Where would I get said kind?

What measurements should I use?

How do I prepare it?

How does it compare to bentonite clay?

How does it interact with curly hair?

Thank you for any and all help!

nopoo for several months now - looking to elevate my haircare

I've been shampoo free for several months now - at least since June. this has involved no shampoo, no conditioner, no gels, no serums, nothing. I've used shampoo only twice since i started my nopoo journey to get hairspray buildup out, and other than that, the only product I've been using is an argan oil after every shower. and my hair has been amazing since!! I've got volume, curl, and no dandruff, which was such a problem before.

now though, I'm wondering if there are other things I can do occasionally to step up my hair game. I've heard of pre-shower hair oiling, but I don't know if it's something to avoid if I don't use any shampoos to get rid of the oil after the fact. I've also considered using a (potentially diy) saltwater spray for texture, and I've heard about using acv in hair but I don't know to what end. I'd like to further define my curls, which I know is normally a gel's job, and get more lasting moisture.

(info if it helps: my hair is shoulder length, thick and coarse, somewhere between 2b and 2c. no treatment or chemicals on this hair. not prone to breakage. i use heat a handful of times a year)

Reports on Flakes/Scalp Issues Dry scalp and flakes

Hey yall - I’ve been on and off shampoo for 5 years or so. I have coarse, dense wavy hair that gets even more volume and texture when I don’t wash it and I love the way that it looks. Only issue is that in the past it’s gotten flaky when I don’t wash it, and I believe it’s just dry scalp, as the flakes are very small but I suppose it could be dandruff.

But over the last 5 years, I was no poo until may of this year when the flakes got too annoying and I started shampooing again, hoping it would help. Right after washing it felt better but they would come back after 2-3 days and just as bad as they were before but my hair looks worse 😭😂.

I come here to ask if anyone has been in a similar situation and was hoping to get some advice on how to handle this situation, so that I can continue no shampoo but at the very least have less flakes.

I also use a shower filter to filter out chlorine and other hard chemicals in the water.

Thanks fellas!

This may not be a correct place to ask but, I shampoo my hair twice a week. There is this oily stench on my hair. I wash it with Pantene, I know it’s not good at all. Can anybody recommend good/healthy shampoos

How to make your hair wet look all day, is it possible without products because with products you need shampoo.

As a man. I seen people on no shampoo and their hair stay back as messy slickback without any products
