Discussion [AMA Announcement] I'm David McKenzie, former Lead World Designer on New World. I shipped Nighthaven and Brimstone Sands. Doing an AMA next Wednesday, March 11th at 2PM EST / 7PM GMT. Drop your questions here!

Hey Aeternum,

Long-time lurker, first-time poster here (at least with this account). I'm David McKenzie, and I spent several years at Amazon Games as the Lead World Designer on New World. My biggest shipped credits are Nighthaven and Brimstone Sands, but I'm genuinely here for all of it.

I've been out of AGS for a while now and I've been wanting to do something like this for a long time. There's a lot I can talk about, and honestly some stuff I still can't, but I'll be as open as I'm able to be.

I'll be back on Wednesday, March 11th, at 2PM EST / 7PM GMT to answer questions live.

In the meantime, post your questions in this thread and I'll use the week to think through the ones I want to tackle first when the AMA kicks off. Upvote the questions you most want answered so I can prioritize.

Fair warning on what I can and can't cover: I'm happy to dig into design philosophy, zone-building, lore decisions, what made it into the game vs. what got cut, the realities of live service development, and what it's actually like working on an MMO at that scale. I'll do my best to be straight with you on the hard questions too. What I won't do is break NDA, or throw anyone under the bus, or get into anything that's genuinely confidential.

See you next week!

— David McKenzie ( www.david-mckenzie.com )

Update: I'm blown away by the support and love from the playerbase! I'm working my way through the questions now, and I'll continue to answer questions throughout the rest of the evening.

Update: Continuing to answer questions as I get time. If you have a question and it doesn't have an existing answer, I will probably get around to it!

Update: I'm just gonna keep answering questions whenever I have time until I finally answer every single one. Cheers, and thank you so much to everyone for the support, kindness, and love. New World will forever be in my heart, and the players made it happen, made it real, and made it the honor of my life.

DEV-Response A Message from the NewWorldGame Mod Team

(edit: dev response flair is automatically added when a dev posts a comment below) The thead here is from the subreddit Mod team, who are all community members and do not and didn't work for Amazon.

The last couple of days it's been hard to put my thoughts together, and this has been a tough post to write.

By now, most of you have seen the news. Amazon Games has announced that new content development for New World is ending. Season 10 and the Nighthaven update will be the last major content release the game receives. While the servers are slated to remain online "through 2026," the active development of Aeternum is over.

This news comes as part of a much larger, heartbreaking wave of layoffs across Amazon's gaming division, with the Irvine studio that poured its soul into this world being hit particularly hard. It’s a gut punch, especially because it feels like it came out of nowhere. The community was buzzing again, player counts were up, and Season 10 felt like another strong step in the right direction. To have the plug pulled now, right at what felt like a new peak of potential and revitalization... is a special kind of cruel irony that I know many of you are feeling.

For me, this isn't just the loss of a game. This is the loss of a massive part of my life for the better part of a decade. It's the loss of a world I helped shape, a community I helped raise, and friendships I'll always cherish.

My Journey in Aeternum

My own story with this game is nearly as old as the game itself. I was there at the 2016 TwitchCon reveal when New World was just a bold idea alongside other ambitious projects. From that moment, I was hooked. I became one of the first members of the public to set foot in Aeternum as part of Wave 1 during Alpha 1 tests back in 2018, and have been a part of nearly every closed test since, even in concurrent new world servers during early and post-launch. All counted somewhere north of 10k hours. Over 8 years...

I was there for the wild days of the open-world PvP base-building sandbox. I saw the good, the bad, and the ugly of that system firsthand and provided feedback alongside the rest of that small, initial group of testers. I've watched this game fundamentally transform, pivot, and evolve over the years, and I've been in the trenches testing it every step of the way. This game, its development, and its community haven't just been a hobby for me; they've been a constant, driving passion for over eight years. To see it end like this feels like losing a piece of myself.

Building Our Home: From a Few Thousand to 300,000+ Strong

In parallel to my time testing the game, I was here, helping build this community from the ground up. I didn't start as the lead here but have been for nearly 5 years As the lead moderator. I've had the incredible privilege of building this space from just a few thousand curious adventurers into a bustling hub of over 300,000 people. With more than 9 million views per month. and... in the last 12 months 66,288 Moderation actions... God help me...

Some of you may even remember our old name: r/new_world_mmo. As the game evolved and its launch in 2021 approached, we decided to transition to r/newworldgame. There was a lot to that choice, even temporary fracturing of the community, but that's long ago history. It was more than a name change; it was about making this the one central place for the whole community and shedding some serious problems, eventually combining subreddits in the form it takes today, more or less. Witnessing the following growth, seeing the connections people made, the guides they wrote, the accomplishments they had, the stories they shared. It has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. As far as volunteer, unpaid experiences go, it has not been easy, but I stayed because I love this game and wanted to build a space where people could discuss the game, the good and the bad, and share it with the rest of reddit.

A Partnership Effectively Built

The relationship between this subreddit and the development team went far beyond simple bug reports. I personally knew over 30 developers, artists, and community managers who were passionate people who loved Aeternum as much as we did. This is as close to an inside perspective as it gets, which is why I often publicly defended Scot and Katy; they were in the trenches with us, reading our feedback and genuinely caring. Many people do not understand the long development cycles of expansions. For instance, content for Brimstone Sands was already in development at launch, and Nighthaven content had started before the Angry Earth expansion was released. This context shows the immense long-term planning required while simultaneously fixing immediate issues.

The Subreddit had/has an active relationship that led to a vital, unseen collaboration. The subreddit had a direct, private communication line to key AGS staff, which I called the "bat phone" used from launch until February 2022. When game-breaking exploits like gold dupes were found, we did not let them spread on the subreddit; we used the bat phone to tell the developers directly. This is why the mod team could confidently say the devs were aware of an issue while asking users not to share the exploit steps. We used this line to report mass server crashes and many other issues. This direct line was essential for relaying critical information during the chaos of launch queues when official channels were overloaded.

This tool was a necessary partnership born from the game's technical volatility and the developers' trust in us as a reliable alarm system. It was almost always a one-way street: we provided critical information, and in return, we got a better game and occasional subreddit art. Despite this closeness, the subreddit always maintained its independence. We never removed content unless it violated our own community-developed rules, which AGS had no input on. They respected our independence and never pushed the issue when we said no. This mutual respect made it one of the most effective community-partner developer relationships I have seen. The results of getting things fixed speak for themselves, where in one instance, I was the first to report a gold dupe issue that surfaced on Reddit, and resulted in a full market stop within 45 minutes.

That method changed in February 2022 with the formation of the "New World Experts Group," a fact I can now confirm exists (with permission from Amazon Legal), along with my voluntary membership. Scot also outed the existence of this group 3 years ago in an interview. This active group included expert players of all styles and developers, allowing them to discuss and test content in development. While I cannot share specific conversations, it allowed me, as someone who saw nearly every subreddit post and 10K hours of playtime, to provide direct feedback. The more that group was trusted, the better results we saw. It was a privilege to be part of this group and to gain the development context I mentioned earlier.

To Our Friends at Amazon Games

This part is for you, the developers, artists, Videographers, Sound Designers, Combat systems engineers, Server and backend Azoth Engine developers, designers, and community managers who are reading this.

Thank you,

Thank you for the countless hours, the passion, and the creativity you poured into Aeternum. Thank you for listening to us, for engaging with us, and for never giving up on the game, even when the feedback was harsh or the technical hurdles seemed insurmountable. We saw your effort. We felt your dedication.

Please know that the community's current anger and disappointment are not directed at you. We know this decision was not yours. It was a corporate one, made in a boardroom far removed from the world you so carefully crafted. You are as much victims of this as we are, and for that, we are truly sorry. You deserved to see this project continue to grow and flourish. The talent in your studio is off the charts, and we can't wait to see what you all create in the future. We wish you the absolute best.

The Future of This Subreddit

With the servers remaining online for a while, this community still has a home. But what it's for is going to change. The mod team is already talking about what to do with r/newworldgame long-term, and we want you all to be part of that conversation.

What should this space become?

  • A Living Archive: A place to preserve the incredible guides, lore discussions, databases, and memories we've all created. A monument to the game and its community.
  • A Community Hub: A place for players to organize final in-game events, "end of the world" parties, screenshot contests, and farewell tours of Aeternum.
  • A Diaspora Network: A place for players to connect, share what games they're moving on to, and for companies and friends to find new worlds to explore together.

These are just ideas. We are open to your suggestions. This has always been your community, and you should have a say in its legacy.

This is a sad day, but our journey isn't quite over. Let's make the time we have left in Aeternum count. Thank you all for being a part of this incredible adventure.

A Thank You to My Team.

Lastly, I want to thank the Reddit Moderator Team. We are community members like you. Both the Current and former team members for everything, honorable mention u/joshrice for years of service and tens of thousands of moderation actions. This isn't a paid job, and it's not an easy job. but someone has to do it. for that, I can't thank them enough for their help in building and shaping this community.

u/commanderaze

I'd love to hear more stories from everyone else about their time in New World as we continue down the path forward.

Question I’ve been seeing posts about azoth

I love this game and unfortunately when I played I did not have a pc yet so I only own the game on console. I was so excited about the azoth servers when I first heard about them but it brings me a few questions.

Will it only work if you owned the game on steam?
Will you be creating a crossplay version if not already planning on it?
If no cross play would there be a way to play if you do not own the game on steam? (Because I only owned it on PlayStation)

Question What does this game mean to you?

Bit of a tangent post but I'm currently writing an article about gaming and wellbeing with a specific focus on what gaming means to players. (I am a gaming-informed therapist in the UK and psycho-educational wellbeing provider)

I am a former NW player myself and having seen what's happened to the game, I'd be really interested in how people are feeling about it?

Grief in gaming is something very few mental health professionals understand or even consider and I want to shine a light on it.

If anybody is comfortable to do so, I would really love to hear peoples thoughts on this.

Is this a community that you rely on, and without it feel an impending loss?

I'm happy for people to reply publicly or via PM.

Question Are there any dumps of ripped models for the game (specifically armor) anywhere?

I'm looking to try and port some armors from the game to Skyrim and some other games, does anyone know where I can find the full quality models without having to rip them myself?

Video New World - Music & Ambience - Elysian Wilds

Thumbnail
youtube.com
91 Upvotes

Greetings Adventurers, Matsume here back with another video this time featuring Elysian Wilds.

This video features 1.5 hours of scenery from Elysian Wilds composed of 180 clips of the 32 PoIs scattered about it's 12 regions.

I'm not gunna lie, part of me didn't want to make this video because I'm still upset the devs destroyed First Light for this zone. Also, the ambient sound effects are kind of annoying (non stop howler monkeys driving me crazy, smh). Finally, the giant deformed fungal trees and vegetative overgrowth make it very difficult to capture aesthetic scenes. Nevertheless, and for the sake of completion, I grit my teeth and did what needed to be done. I hope you all enjoy it.

With the conclusion of this video, only one zone remains - Night Haven. I'm going to try to record as much of the Night Haven footage as possible between now and next sunday at which point I'm going to take a break to enjoy the Adrullan Online public test starting sunday nov 1st. If you haven't already, I highly recommend checking it out. It's just fun.

Anyway that's all for now folks. Have fun out there.

Cheers, Matsume

Discussion What is the next thing we may get closest to New World

So I am certain I have seen this already but today I decided to put my words in the ring

I have been hearing a lot of people say that Archeage Chronicles is the next New World as the design and such is close. Though I would argue it isn’t quite there. Chrono Odyssey is giving me the most new world vibes from watching gameplay but there is still little that is know about chrono and we won’t know more until more is released

Looking backwards

GW2 is definitely the best option of games out to play that has a solid player based and variety of things to do but it definitely doesn’t fill the void that is New World to most of us. I want to be in the trenches running quests from the village clearing all the side quests on the map and also doing dungeons, PVP, faction war, faction missions. All in one smooth run. As well as working on my stat points and being able to make changes as I want while also seeing what it is affected as I do the point exchange. The quickness of PvP while also because very technical (I’ll admit I wasn’t good at PVP until I made my tank that just mopped up dmg given)

So guild wars 2 is out.

I hear people talk about runescape. Now I haven’t played runescape dragonwilds but the gameplay I have watched gives me hope that runescape 4 whenever it may come out is going to be a great option and having the great company that is Jagex when it comes to listening to the community I hope it takes some of us but at the current state runescape doesn’t give the action combat we all came to love

WOW, aion 2, Final Fantasy are probably great games but we also had new world with an optional pay to progress (aka materials and skin not actual levels and gear stat points just materials to attempt to make that gear) I can’t comment on Final Fantasy other than the pay to play that happens after the free trial. And Aion 2 feels like a mobile game brought to a PC which it is but it’s very blatant.

I hold high hopes for Chrono Odyssey and Archeage Chronicles but Archeage has some things I will need it to change personally before I consider it the next New World and as for Chrono Odyssey we will need to wait but I have the highest of hopes it is the one. But time will tell

Tell me your thoughts and games you have found that fill the void while also still staying with the MMO part. (Which is the hardest part for me)

Question Starting fresh

Hello! I've not played since they announced closure! But decided to give it one last go!

I've currently got 2 characters that are heals and a tank, but since my company is no longer in existence and worlds are all merged, I'm creating a new character

I never usually play DPS, but considering I don't have anyone still active to play with, any tips on building a DPS character would be great!

Unless people think it's still viable to play a healer or tank these days? (I'm on EU server if that makes a difference)

Video Juxy's Return to Aeternum - Part Three of my Animation Series

Thumbnail

With the one year anniversary of the announcement coming up on 10/28 and all of the amazing progress that's already happening to bring about a second life to New World Aeternum, I want to release part three of my animation series.

If you haven't seen the others, you should watch them first.

I've had a lot of fun making these and hope you enjoy them!

Finally, as excited as I am for what lays beyond January 31st, the official servers are still up right now and I'm still playing most nights and releasing regular pvp videos. If I've stirred anything up for you, I'm really hoping that you decide to return for the final three months. Would love to see some old legends pvp again.

See you on Valhalla!

---

Edit: I initially decided that I wouldn't respond to the negative comments being posted here because it seemed obvious to me that the kind of person who would make these kinds of comments did not and probably never would try to understand what my intentions were or where I was coming from. They could never be persuaded of any argument I could put forth on any topic so there was no point in attempting a response. My goal of sharing my video to the New World community was already completed.

But there are also those who exist somewhere in the middle who can be more reasonable. So to those of you who just have a philosophical objection to AI, you are right. I totally agree with you about all the real and potential harms of the technology. But I also believe that it isn't going anywhere no matter what we do or how we feel about it. It is very likely that I too will eventually lose my job to AI. And if it happens, it happens and until it happens, I might as well use it to fulfill dreams that I thought were forever out of reach.

I've always loved animation and always wanted to make my own. And now I can. It seemed the perfect way to give new life to the character I played in New World for thousands of hours while also sharing my passion for the game with those who are also as passionate. So I will keep doing it regardless.

To those who don't understand the story, I get it. I threw a lot at you and it would be even more confusing had you not watched the first two parts as I suggested. It's actually a very difficult task to convey a complex story without dialogue and keep the whole thing to the length of one song. I'm sure you all can do better than I did and I encourage you to try.

Lastly, everyone is totally entitled to their opinion, positive or negative so feel free to jump on the "AI Slop" bandwagon below if that's what you want to do. =P

Question New MMO

Hi! So I’ve been trying to fill in the void of New World being gone. I tried the demo of Archage. While i think it has potential, it’s still not hitting like new world. It reminds me of crimson desert, but with better controls and actual people running around lol.

I’m looking forward to project Azoth though!

Discussion My experience with Project Azoth - the new world private server project

Hey folks, br00d here.

As many of you know from previous posts on this sub in the last few weeks, Project Azoth has been showing off videos and updates on their private server.

yesterday, they opened it up for an initial playtest to a number of people in their disc community. I wanted to share my thoughts below:

for those that want a video to follow along and see gameplay from the private server you can do so here:

I Tested Project Azoth’s New World Private Server

For those that just want a text summary I will post my thoughts below:

  • playtest was very impressive, it has it's own launcher, it was easy to setup.
  • this was their very first open playtest and its purpose was to show the community it does work and to stress the servers and finally to have more people report bugs and issues.
  • my overall experience was S tier, the game worked, I was on the private server with a handful of other players running around. There were laggy moments, some hit registration issues with mobs and mobs being a little janky, but the devs have already noted that this is early early on, and these things will be ironed out in the long term.
  • I left feeling excited that there might be some sort of preserved version of New World.. let me know what you guys think if you played in the playtest or are just curious about their project.

Discussion Updating Azoth [Day 10] - Our First Playtest

Day 10, everyone.

Over the past few days, we've seen a lot of discussion, speculation, and skepticism about Azoth and whether we're actually building something that works.

We understand that. It's a big project, the timeline is ambitious, and videos can only show so much.

So we decided to do something about it.

We opened Azoth for its first playtest.

Even though the project is still in its very early stages, we wanted to let people experience what we've been building for themselves, rather than asking everyone to simply take our word for it.

The goal wasn't to present a finished game or pretend we're further along than we actually are. We wanted to put our work into people's hands, see multiple players connecting to our server, gather feedback, identify issues, and prove that this project is real.

And that's exactly what we did.

Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to put together a proper video or a detailed breakdown of the playtest for this post. However, some members of the community have already started sharing their experiences, so feel free to look around and see what people are saying.

Where We Are Today

Azoth is still a work in progress. There are bugs, unfinished systems, and plenty of challenges ahead of us.

We're not claiming to have recreated all of New World, and we're not pretending that building a complete MMORPG server is an easy task.

But we're making progress, and now people have had the opportunity to experience that progress firsthand.

For the latest information about our development, what we're working on, and where the project currently stands, visit our website:

Project Azoth: https://projectazoth.com

You can also join our Discord to follow development more closely, talk with the community, and stay informed about what's coming next.

Discord: https://discord.gg/Ya8xM2NaGf

The Dream Continues

We started Azoth because we didn't want to accept that the end of New World's official servers had to mean the end of Aeternum.

That goal hasn't changed.

We're still here, still building, and still working toward giving this community a way to keep playing a game that means so much to so many people.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us, questioned us, tested our work, shared feedback, or helped spread the word.

We know there's still a long road ahead, but the first playtest is another important step forward.

The dream of keeping New World alive is still standing. And we're going to keep working to make it happen.

See you in the next update.

Question If New World gets miraculously saved by any of these Projects, how long would that last?

I've been researching all these reverse engineering projects meant to "save" New World. I won't pretend to know how it's being done. But I've seen multiple projects making a play for this.

Let's say it suceeds. We get to play New World after the shutdown. How long will that last? There will be no new content, the game will simply stay as it is. And while that could buy some extra time, sooner rather than later the game will fade.

PS. Why don't all these different projects just combine forces. Wouldn't this make the progress faster and better?

Question Looking for @Legend, the kind stranger who gifted me diamonds and colorful clothes in New World (May 2022)

Hey everyone! ❤️
I’m hoping Reddit can help me find someone I met while playing New World back in May 2022.
My username was Mariia14, and honestly, I was TERRIBLE at the game 😂 But there was this incredibly kind person whose username was Legend. They made me beautiful clothes in pretty colors and even gifted me diamonds! 💎
I still remember how nice they were to me 🥹
Unfortunately, my husband convinced me to move to a different server, and I lost touch with Legend. I never got the chance to say a proper goodbye or thank them for their kindness.
It’s been years, but I still remember this random act of kindness, and I’d genuinely love to find them again!
Legend, if you’re out there, it’s Mariia14! Do you remember the girl who couldn’t play properly but loved her colorful outfits? 😂
And if anyone happens to know someone who played under the name Legend around that time, I’d be so grateful for any help!
Let’s see if Reddit can work its magic. 🤞✨

Discussion One last run

Hi! Like probably a lot of you, I’ve been trying out different games to scratch that NW itch, but nothing has really hit the same. So I’ve decided to just enjoy it while it lasts and do one last run in one of the best games I’ve ever played.
Drop your favorite or most fun solo builds for me to try! I’ve always been a healer, but I’m open to anything. :)

Question Med or heavy sns/spear build?

New World only has a few months left and I want to return for a bit and enjoy it while I can.

When season 10 came out, all my gear was outdated and the reworked perks completely changed everything.

I ran virtually every build, but one that I want to try again for the close of NW is a med/heavy SnS spear build, probably using scorpion for maximum disrupter.

Can someone recommend a build?

I played a bit of season 10 when it came out, but I struggled with the meta because I felt so squishy and everyone felt tanky. So I know I need to adapt.

Discussion Thank you..

I dont talk about this personal stuff very often just in general let alone on the internet but I want to thank each and every person on Valhalla that made the years in new world fun wether it was pvp or dungeons.

I picked up NW shortly after a 6 year relationship failed, I lost an animal, my job at the time and had to move back home with my parents. Its safe to say that new world was the only light I had in that darkness that kept me moving every day.

And to those who struggle with mental health I hope you find your "new world" as it was and will be remembered by me

Discussion New World will always have a special place in my heart. Here's why.

I played New World during all three betas.

Back then, I was single, had plenty of free time, and was really excited about the game.

When it finally launched, I played all the way to max level, but eventually quit because of all the issues it had.

Fast forward to 2025.

I'm married now, and in July, my first daughter was born.

As any new parent knows, those first few months can be pretty exhausting. My wife and I started taking turns staying awake with our daughter so the other could get some sleep.

I usually stayed up until around 3 AM.

One night, I started wondering what I could play on my PS5 to help me stay awake and pass the time.

That's when I decided to give New World another shot.

And man, the game had changed so much.

There were people everywhere, the game felt alive again, and I remember seeing peaks of around 40k concurrent players. It really felt like things were going well.

I was genuinely enjoying it.

Night after night, I'd be sitting on the couch with my daughter sleeping in my arms, playing New World while my wife got some much-needed rest.

Sometimes I'd be gathering, sometimes doing quests, sometimes just running around Aeternum.

Nothing crazy, really. Just enjoying the game while my little girl slept and my wife got some rest.

Then, after what I thought was one of the best updates the game had received, we suddenly got the news that New World was shutting down.

I was honestly surprised. The game seemed to be doing so well again.

After that, I decided to stop playing.

By then, a few months had passed. My daughter was sleeping more regularly, and those long nights were slowly becoming a thing of the past.

And now, knowing that Aeternum will eventually disappear, I can't help but feel a little sad.

Someday my daughter will grow up, and she probably won't even know what New World was.

She won't remember those nights, but I will.

I'll remember sitting on the couch at 2 AM, with the TV on and my daughter sleeping in my arms, just wandering around Aeternum.

It's funny how a game can become part of such a specific time in your life.

Thanks for the memories, New World.

I'll miss this game...

Video I've been reverse-engineering New World since August to build a server emulator — Devlog #01

Since the servers have an end date, I've been working on a server emulator so the game can keep living after that. I started in early August and kept it to myself until now; today I finally decided to show the progress.

What already works in my test build:

- Melee combat and weapon abilities with cooldowns

- Status effects, crits and perks

- AI creatures (boars) with crowd control

- XP, levels, weapon mastery and talent trees (with respec)

- Loot, gathering, skinning, woodcutting and crafting

- Store, death and respawn

Still in testing: multiplayer. Other players show up and animate, but sync still has bugs.

Devlog (1:54): https://youtu.be/cW0u3of50Jc

Not a launch, just progress. Happy to answer questions about how it works.

Discussion I ain't missin you at all (I am)

I gotta tell you, even with all these new (new-old) MMOS rolling out soon, I miss this game. The PVP was a blast.

I am curious which aspect you all enjoyed/miss the most?

While I hold to my previous statement, I loved the PVP. Last build I was running was VG/Flail. It was probably trash (or I played trash) but it was fun. However, what I really miss is the Music tradeskill. Playing music was so much fun. I had always dreamed they would have expanded it.
