Native Player 2.0 brings LOSSLESS TrueHD Atmos and DTS:X with height channels preserved. Plus AV1, Dolby Vision Profile 10, SMB and more.

Hi everyone,

about two months ago we released Native Player v1, the first player to deliver the height channels of Dolby TrueHD Atmos (and later DTS:X) on Apple TV. Before that, your only option was a lossless 7.1 downmix with the height channels thrown away. Our Atmos path kept the heights, but it was lossy, even at 4 Mbps.

Today we are super excited to release Native Player 2.0, and it fixes exactly that. TrueHD Atmos and DTS:X are now LOSSLESS, heights included! Once again, Native Player is the first and only player to do it on Apple TV.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

You can play Blu-ray remuxes with TrueHD Atmos or DTS:X without losing sound quality and without losing the height channels. The track is decoded losslessly with no re-compression, and the objects are rendered to your speaker layout.

Here is a simple way to put it. Infuse and other players strip the height channels and deliver TrueHD Atmos and DTS:X as lossless 7.1.
Native Player renders it to the layout of your setup (5.1.2, 7.1.4, 9.1.6 and so on), and it stays lossless.

IS THIS AUDIO PASSTHROUGH?

No. Apple TV does not support bitstream passthrough, because tvOS wants to stay in control of the audio (volume leveling, dialogue enhancement and so on). Everything related with Atmos leaves the Apple TV over Dolby MAT.

AUDIO BITRATE

The bitrate depends on the number of channels and the TrueHD/DTS:X format. For example, with a 24-bit, 48 kHz TrueHD track, Infuse delivers lossless 7.1 at around 9.2 Mbps.

In Native Player, 7.1.4 gives you 13.8 Mbps, and 9.1.6 gives you a massive 18.4 Mbps.

Lossless Atmos - audio bitrate of 18.4 Mbps for 9.1.6 TrueHD Atmos (24 bit, 48 kHz)

HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?

This is our own proprietary technology. We developed it over several years for our other app, Sound Test for Dolby Atmos, which has become the gold standard for testing Dolby Atmos on tvOS. The same technology now powers Native Player. TrueHD Atmos is rendered to the speaker layout you select in the settings, while DTS:X is always rendered in 7.1.4.

AV1 AND DOLBY VISION PROFILE 10

Version 2.0 adds AV1 playback on every Apple TV 4K. The Dolby Vision metadata is carried over untouched, so Profile 10 (10.0, 10.1 and 10.4) plays as real Dolby Vision.

As far as we know, this is the first tvOS app to do that. That means we now support Dolby Vision Profiles 5, 7, 8 and 10 with full Dolby Vision metadata. The only exception is Profile 7 FEL titles, where the enhancement layer is dropped, so the Dolby Vision is not complete. In those cases the app asks whether you want to watch in Dolby Vision or HDR10.

SMB AND WEBDAV

You can now browse and play directly from SMB shares and WebDAV servers. WebDAV self-signed certificates are supported too.

OTHER NEWS

• Sorting for network files and folders

• Search inside network folders

• Multichannel FLAC music files supported

• Major stability and performance improvements

• Fixes for seeking, buffering and resuming from the background

WHAT'S NEXT?

ISO and BDMV files and Plex integration! Plex is already working, and we are working on UI to make it as good as possible. We expect to launch in two weeks. We are also working on Atmos for HomePod and AirPods. After that, we plan to support Jellyfin and Emby.

PRICING

Everything above is free to try. Full-length playback of TrueHD Atmos, DTS:X and Dolby Vision Profile 7 titles is part of Native Player Pro, which costs $5 per year or $25 lifetime at the current early adopter price.

We also want to be transparent. When Plex support launches, the early adopter offer ends and the price goes up for both the yearly and lifetime plans. Existing subscribers keep the early adopter price forever.

SPECIAL THANKS

• The Reddit community. You guys are awesome! A huge thank you for every message, comment and movie report you've shared with us. Your feedback and support have helped us push Native Player forward and make it better with every update.

• Apple Developer Technical Support for helping us achieve full bandwidth over Dolby MAT.

Is this feature similar to an AVR’s DRC mode? And would it be possible to have to option to turn it on and off during video playback?

I don't get it, does it play DV7 FEL or not? I doubt...
This is what I get when trying to play a bluray remux that has DV 7 FEL. Actually all remuxes I have tried show this when playing.

Change from yearly to one-time purchase

Hey, Native Player devs! Thanks for creating such an amazing app and saving me $200 since I no longer wanna get a shield. I loved the app so much that I got the yearly subscription for the app and was really satisfied with it. I recently learned that the app will be leaving its "early adoption" pricing and I wanted to snag the discounted price before it was too late but cannot find the option for the one-time purchase after cancelling my yearly subscription. I'm sure I'm not the only person who'd want to do this and was wondering if there's a way to do get that one-time purchase option back? Again, thanks so much for an amazing app and giving us the most out of our home theatre setups.

P.S. I'm really excited for the Plex integration

Possibility of A Discord Community

i just learned about this app today and bought a lifetime membership after testing it out.

It‘s incredible thus far and I’m excited to see what the future brings in upcoming releases.

With that said, it would be great to build a community and converse in real-time about our experiences and thoughts about our media and the Native Player app itself.

Unfortunately, I am not well versed in creating Discord servers/communities so I was wondering if the developers or someone from the Reddit community would want to create this.

Works great on movies but will not play tv recordings from Plez

I have been using Native Payer with Plezy. It works great for my movies and the new update 2 seems to fill the final holes for audio and dv 7. Problem is you cannot play your tv recordings so you need to use the Plezy player for that and native player for movies. Be nice if native player didn’t have this limitation. I still bought the earlier adopters license. Nothing better for movies exists and this seems like it should be easy to fix since every other player can play this.

Support for ISO and BDMV files?

Loving the player, finally to have Atmos working through AppleTV is a game changer. Awesome stuff chaps!

Is there a chance that BDMV and ISO files will be supported in a future build? I have a large collection of these which Infuse can handle, but would love support in NativePlayer to really unleash their contents. Here's hoping 🤞🏻

Extensive Buffering

Hey I subscribed the pro yearly subscription, and I enjoy the app mainly because of the trueHD atmos support.
The only problem is that I’m experiencing some buffering from time to time, every time I try to scrub or I pause the movie. It works a little bit better when playing the movie from the URL, but when using as an external player (from Strimr), it buffers a lot and sometimes it is unplayable.
The internet speed or connection is not the problem, as I play the same files in other video players and they play just fine with no buffering, also the internet speed is 1GB/s.
I’m playing it on a Apple TV 4K 3rd gen, tvOS 27.
The movies I tried were all remux versions of Nope, Unbroken and Ready player one.
Hope you can help.
Looking forward to the jellyfin implementation.
Great work!

"invalid certificate" error when connecting a HTTPS WebDAV server

This error is common when connecting a self hosted server, but clients like browsers normally have an option to ignore it and connect anyway. Native Player 1.2 doesn't seem to allow this, or am I missing something?

I'm using a Synology DS1618+ on HTTPS-only webdav, 3rd gen ATV 4K on tvOS 27.

I'm not using a DDNS address, just an IPv4 address within the LAN.

The full visible error (it's truncated) is:

Could not reach the server. The certificate for the server is invalid. You might be connecting to a server that is pretending to be "[server's IP]" which could...

As an aside, one pet peeve of mine is when there's no way to expand and see the full truncated text, especially when it's an error message, maybe this can be fixed too?

TLS error when trying to add smb

Hello,

First and foremost, massive thanks for this huge work! So happy that there is finally a way to get high channels on APTV.

just tried to add my smb, but I am always getting the tollowing message « A TLS error caused the secure connection to fail». I tried with IP adress directly, and .local, but both give the same result.

My smb was already on before I tried on Native Player, and it is still working on Infuse. Any idea how to solve that?

For sure I am going buy the licence as soon as I can try it.

PS: I post it again but deleted for no reason...

Correct settings

Post image
1 Upvotes

Is this the correct settings for Apple TV?
I tested it and when I turn Atmos off, DTSX height channels are not playing from ceiling speaker (I have 7.2.4 layout). When I turn Atmos on, height channels in DTSX play correctly, but the display on my receiver shows Dolby Atmos, no matter what signal it is… or am I missing something? Can native player behave like my Nvidia Shield Pro when my AVR always displays correct codec on the display?

Native Player v1.2 — WebDAV, Blu-ray PGS subtitles, Homepod fixes, fixed seeking with embedded subs

Post image
26 Upvotes

Sorry for the delay, guys! Apple took almost 5 days to review our app.

New in 1.2

  • WebDAV servers - add your NAS or cloud storage in the new Servers tab, browse folders and play files directly
  • Blu-ray PGS subtitles - image-based subtitles from Blu-ray discs now appear in the subtitle picker, converted to text on the device
  • Fixed playback with subtitles - embedded subtitles no longer slow down large files: seeking is faster and every subtitle language is available instantly
  • Improved multichannel audio handling for HomePod and other AirPlay speakers
  • A clearer loading screen when a movie starts, including when another app opens it
  • Bug fixes and performance improvements

In progress

  • Plex
  • Jellyfin
  • SMB

Native Player Pro

As announced, we are introducing paid pro version. Pro exists for one reason: to fund development. Plex, Jellyfin and SMB are the next big pieces of work and this is what keeps them moving.

Titles with Dolby Vision Profile 7, TrueHD Dolby Atmos or DTS:X play a free preview and Pro unlocks them in full. It’s $5/year or $25 lifetime in the US (the App Store sets the equivalent price for other countries).

As always, if something breaks on your setup, post it here and we will look into it.

Understanding URL Scheme syntax

What setting is required to keep you in plezy after exiting a movie, so to not drop back to native player and how do you maintain position/progress of the movie when native player is the external player? Thanks!

New Update

Looks like it’s really going the right way.
Fantastic we can add WebDAV and works well. Needs cloud services and metadata support perhaps?

But the big one for me is allowing HomePod Atmos, especially with the new surround Atmos feature coming with 4x HomePods. Be fantastic for my remux DTS-X encodings to get Atmos effect on my HomePods. It also seems to buffer with the HomePods attached more and not the tv on its own?

Anyway. You have worked very hard and it’s showing and I’d happily pay the license for a lifetime if the HomePods can be worked out please.
Thanks.

Great concept, congrats, but I have Issues with AirPods Max.

Really interesting app! I have integrated it as an external player into my own app (a purely private project), and so far it works quite well. I now have four different players linked in my app: Infuse, Oppo Player via a Play-to-DLNA command, Native Player, and Apple’s own player engine for compatible MP4 files.

From a technical standpoint, everything in Native Player seems to work as advertised. However, im sometimes still experiencing buffering issues, even with the latest version.

There is also something I can't quite figure out. I use my AirPods Max a lot for watching movies, and regardless of whether I’m playing Atmos audio or regular multichannel audio tracks, the sound is noticeably different (worse) when using Native Player.

The center channel often sounds kinda more echoey, and the bass seems noticeably reduced as well.

Any idea what could be causing this?

Just got it working with Plezy!!

Only had a few minutes but tested a few TrueHD movies. Largest was about 40GB.
All played well. My Denon reported either Atmos or PCM for input.
Lip sync and all appeared good even with slipping forward & back or jumping chapters.
I did have 1 MKV that gave an error playing. AV1 video with TrueHD audio. I clicked on the button to submit it for review.
This file plays fine in Infuse & Plezy with the native players, but obviously all height info is lost.

Thanks again for this effort.
As others have said, concentrate on the player first. Plex & other integration later. External player works fine for now.

Let us know when we can contribute $$$ to the cause!

Using Native Player as an external player

Native Player can be used as an external player. Keep browsing in the app you're used to (Plex/Jellyfin/Emby clients, Stremio-addon apps …) and hand playback over to Native Player, so you get:

- Dolby Vision Profile 7
- TrueHD Atmos
- DTS:X

Apps support this in one of two ways:

• Native Player built in: Some apps already list Native Player as an external player option. Just select it in the app's settings.

• Custom player: Some apps let you add your own external player (often called a "custom player" or "custom URL scheme"). You add Native Player there yourself. The list below shows what to enter.

📋Apps that can open videos in Native Player (tvOS)

The list isn't complete. There are probably more apps with a custom player option where Native Player works too. If you find one, please share it in the comments so we can add it.

Your app doesn't support it?

Ask the developer to add Native Player as an external player and send them the developer doc below. If the app already supports Infuse, it's a very small change: Native Player's x-callback-url works the same way as Infuse's, with the same parameters and the same progress sent back. Details below:

⚙️ Native Player deep link integration

Featured inside Native Player

Every app that fully supports Native Player with x-callback-url so watch progress syncs back to the app, will be featured inside Native Player in the next version, coming soon.

Comment here to help us keeping this list fresh.

Feature request: WebDAV browser support

I would like the ability to add a WebDAV source like torbox.app and just browse the media files within Native Player and hit play on the files..

Copying the url from such a streaming service obviously breaks because their download urls are temporary..

If there is a better way to use NativePlayer for this use case, I'd be happy to hear..

Need to pull audio descriptions from file

Post image
4 Upvotes

The top image is Native Player launched by Plezy the bottom is Infuse. Native Player has the additional Atmos playback on Apple TV (amazing) but is missing the extra audio description data to help users find things like director commentary.. One Blu-ray rip I have has two different mixes (Pulp Fiction) without pulling over this description data, it makes it very difficult to determine which is which… Keep up the great work!

A few questions

Just to say I’ve downloaded the app and it runs nicely with most files I’ve thrown its way. Including transcoding DTS-X to Atmos.
Sometimes however with big files if you skip it just gives up, especially 4K Remuxes.
But a few questions, do you intend to allow for cloud storage like google drive/outlook/mega?
And WebDAV support also?

And how does it work with HomePods? Infuse seems to work well with HomePods and their capabilities. The app doesn’t find them as Atmos compatible and I know infuse said it had to have a specific code added so they work properly.
Also if you could get iCloud Drive files to play that would be awesome.
I am excited by this app though as it really could be something very special on Apple TV
