Glove weights for Muay thai sparring vs pads: is there a real reason?

My coach keeps telling me to use heavier gloves for pad work and a lighter pair for sparring, but has never really explained why. I’ve been training for about a year and still use one pair for everything, mostly because buying different weights felt like collecting gear when I could barely last ten seconds in a clinch. Is there an actual technical reason for switching between them, or is it just a preference that gets passed down as a rule?

What Strength Work Is Actually Worth Doing at Home for Muay Thai?

Obviously, a home gym can't replace pad work, sparring, or learning proper technique. I'm more interested in what makes sense to do outside regular Muay Thai sessions.

Would you prioritize basic strength movements, single-leg work, core stability, carries, or conditioning?

I'm especially curious about how people fit strength training into their week without showing up to the next class with exhausted shoulders or heavy legs.

If you had limited space and could only keep a few pieces of equipment at home, what would make the biggest difference to your overall training?

Technique/Tips I used teabags to get the smell out of the gloves, for mine it doens't work.

• Upvotes

So I always air out my gloves and put a couple tea bags inside. My Twins don't smell at all, 2,5 years later.

My Rival RSV11 tho started to smell nontheless two months after purchase. They got the same treatment as the Twins.

Are there more effective ways to get rid of the smell?

How to deal with confidence after bad sparring?

I sparred a guy from a different gym who comes to my gym to train. He’s a southpaw, around 6’3, and has about 2 years of experience, while I’m orthodox, 5’11, with around 10 months of striking experience.
Usually, our rounds are really competitive, and sometimes I feel like I’m landing the cleaner shots. But today, my head just wasn’t in the right place. I was distracted by something unrelated to sparring, and I paid the price. He got the better of me for around 5 rounds. The frustrating part is that I knew what mistakes I was making, but mentally I couldn’t get myself to adapt. I kept zoning out instead of focusing on the fight in front of me.
Once the thing distracting me was gone, I started putting work on him and felt like I was fighting much closer to my actual ability. After another 3 rounds, he left, but I went home feeling defeated and questioning whether I can reach the elite level I’m aiming for.
I know I’m still relatively inexperienced, and I understand that becoming an elite fighter takes years of work. But I’m curious: Is it normal in combat sports to have sessions where your mental game completely lets you down, even when you know you’re capable of performing better? How do you learn to stay focused and adapt when your mind isn’t in the right place? And should I change my mindset about what a bad sparring session means for my long-term potential?

What’s your freak recovery from Muay Thai injuries?

• Upvotes

I’ve hurt myself so Many times at Muay Thai that when I go home, the ice packs are on or I can’t walk or the ribs are sore, hands etc etc.. so much so that I swear that I need a break for a while, give myself a zero chance of returning within a week or two.. but some how the next night I’m back again at Muay Thai with a Miraculous injury recovery.. like the weather man giving 100% chance of rain but it turns out to be a beach day?

Last week I accidentally kicked an elbow and my foot was black n bruised.. maybe a fracture or break.. I returned the next 3 nights and ignored the pain.. but over compensating on other foot I found yesterday my Achilles calf completely locked up… I could not walk.. so one foot black n bruised and other calf Achilles gone. Could barely walk.

But somehow I’m at Muay Thai tonight skipping and doing kicks on the pads ? Bouncing about like
Nothings wrong.. sort of like some sort of adrenaline pops in and you don’t feel it?

What are your miraculous Muay Thai injury recoveries?

Best events to watch Muay Thai in Bangkok?

Hi guys, I’ll be arriving in Bangkok in a few days and I’m wondering what events are fun to watch. My dates line up that I won’t be able to catch any ONE or RWS events unless I do massive detours.

In more detail, I land Sunday 1st Nov and leave on the 4th and don’t plan to be back until either the 11th or 12th to catch my flight back on the 13th.

What would you guys recommend I see? I don’t want to watch boring events for my first time. My main aim is to see entertainment, if that’s from two unskilled fighters I don’t mind too much. I just don’t want to watch snooze fests for my first time watching Muay Thai live.

Any advice would be appreciative.

Still getting bullied

Newer to the sport of Muay Thaiz I use to box before for a year but never sparred. I went with a pro in sparring and got my ass handed to me 2 weeks ago Felt like the guy was going damn near 100% when I was doing 60-70. Took a million hard hit to face and legs kicks.

Anyway the next week when we sparred I went with my coach and he beat my ass even harder. I was expecting to get a good light spar with my coach were he would let me get good openings and try to capitalize and piece together combos NOPE. He had a counter for every single thing I threw. Got nearly knocked down I was getting hit so hard in the face and then the clinch I was taking tons of knees to the stomach then swept and thrown on the ground. When I spar I’m literally now afraid of even throwing anything cause I know I’m gonna get countered on everything and potentially dropped. When I spar now I’m Just trying to survive the round. I have never thrown a kick in my life until I start Muay Thai 2 months ago and I’m getting kicked hard af in the leg when I haven’t even learned how to check leg k idk or drilled them. How do I go about this? Am I suppose to expect this cause I’m new? Or is this just wrong. Coach and everyone is nice to me but when it comes to sparring it’s like they want to kill me. I don’t feel like I’m learning when we spar. Should I match the pace and try to give it back?

Has anyone ordered from thaiboxingfightgear.com recently? (Website currently down)

I ordered a pair of Muay Thai shorts from "thaiboxingfightgear.com" a week ago. I tried checking back on my order status today, but the website is completely down / not loading for me.

Has anyone here ordered from them recently? Did your gear actually ship, or did you run into issues? Trying to figure out if this is just temporary website maintenance/server downtime or if it's a complete scam.

Technique/Tips Oz for Sparring

Hey All!

Started training a few months ago and got 14oz gloves to start off. At the time I remember the coach saying to buy 14oz or 16oz gloves, although it’s possible I misheard. Seeing all the chat on Reddit about using 16oz for sparring makes me wonder if I need to get a pair of 16oz gloves. I’d rather not spend the extra money if I don’t have to (and just having one pair of gloves is fine by me), but safety is always the priority. I’m 150 lbs for reference—is it worth me buying 16oz gloves for sparring or can I stay with the 14oz gloves given my weight and that all sparring I do is light?

Thanks!

Raja……What Gives?

About a month ago I ordered a pair of gloves from rajaboxing.com. They took a while to arrive, but when they did, they felt great: good grip bar, nice flexibility, pretty much what I wanted. They felt almost tooooo good, though, so I put them on my scale. They weighed under 11 oz, and they were advertised as 16 oz.

I've emailed and DM'd them on Instagram and gotten no reply.

Has anyone dealt with this company? Did I get scammed, and what's the best way to get a response so I can return them?

Me and another coach from a local gym in Saigon. He's got a kickboxing match coming up so is changing up his style a bit.

This is my gym for anyone in Saigon. Open mat sparring 4pm Sundays. Normally 30-35 people. All levels.
