Moving to Scotland

/r/Scotland/comments/1xevuzj/moving_to_scotland/

My partner and I are from the Netherlands and are seriously considering moving to Scotland, most likely somewhere around Edinburgh, within the next two years (if possible ofcourse).

We have two young children (around 2 and 5) and a third on the way. My partner is a postdoc in medical research and would like to stay in research. I have around 8 years of experience in ecology and the environmental sector, currently working more in green/environmental policy.

We're already looking into the obvious things such as visas, jobs and the English language skills at level B2 (or higer), so I'm not really looking for information that I can easily find through Google.

What I'm more interested in is: what are the things we might not be thinking about yet?

Especially from people who have moved to Scotland themselves, moved there with children, or live in/around Edinburgh.

Were there things about daily life, work, raising children, housing, culture or simply living in Scotland that we should know about?

not in edinburgh, but my husband and i recently moved from the US on student visas & are absolutely loving it!

not sure if you’re planning on renting a flat, but in general that’s pretty tough to do if you’re not physically present to view the property (and you may also need to pay for a guarantor service since you won’t have UK credit established — that was the case for us). we spent a few weeks looking & were ghosted a LOT, but eventually we found a great place on openrent — i’d definitely recommend looking for rentals there since you can chat directly with private landlords & they can be more flexible than rental companies with things like pets or immigrants with zero UK credit.

hope your move goes well!

I moved to Scotland, in Edinburgh, about 5 years ago. I love living here, and I'm sure you'll get people telling you everything in the UK is going to hell, but that's not how I see it. It's a gorgeous city and I feel very much at home
