Discussion What happened to MLBB heroes? No longer originality?
291
u/Koaladog11 Aug 03 '26
Similar assets = cheaper costs
Even though they are so greedy with their multiple monthly gachas, they still decided to cut costs with their designs by using similar assets.
56
u/Hopeful-Newspaper Aug 03 '26
but then they released live action trailer for Marcel.. the budget went there
20
u/loungeHunter6337 Aug 03 '26
But yet marcel didn’t even got the cut he deserve, he got less pick heroes

u/Beautiful-Tension457 Aug 03 '26
All budget went into ccp and the ceo belly

u/IDProG Aug 03 '26
We will see what will happen to MLBB, since it's no longer owned by a Chinese company.

When was MLBB even original
304
u/Educational-Fig-1594 Aug 03 '26
Fanny's gameplay
229
u/RenBan48 Aug 03 '26
Heavily inspired by Mikasa though
The most original concept/playstyle I can think of is Mathilda

Heavily inspired by the ODM gear from AoT, yes, but that type of movement hasn't been implemented in a MOBA until Fanny came out (at least as far as I know). That's arguably original in its own right (again, only in the narrow category of movement style in a MOBA)
7
u/kxyree Aug 03 '26
Hanzo too. Its the first ever concept to every mobas and every other competitor copied his skillset lol
6
u/Switchblade_00 Aug 03 '26
Now getting inspiration from a manga is considered copying? It wasn't copied from any other hero in any other moba.

agreed! plus she's the only assassin/support heroes just like edith, only tank/marksman

u/David_Toleranz Aug 20 '26
Uhhhh she's bacially female Sakeer from Honor of Kings.
They might have differences in gameplay but they're basically the same type of support and they look like siblings lmao

Timbersaw from dota 2
2
u/fishtheblob Aug 03 '26
You play timer like fanny?
8
u/slippery_octupus Aug 03 '26
gonna assume u asked if tiimber is played like fanny, the cable to obstacle and aoe damage is definitely copied from timber though moonton addded more stuff rather than just copy paste, also i dont think any hero moonton has released is original if compared to league and dota. like the new guy marcel is just faceless void turned into support
2
u/hanangems Aug 03 '26
Ya, even though people say it's inspired or copied from Mikasa, fanny was released before AOT Collab and hence indeed very unique
0
u/IvanEarth Aug 03 '26
There was already a MOBA on PC that featured Mikasa as a playable character with the cable mechanic.
1
u/Nmlsed Aug 04 '26
Timbersaw from dota, Camille from league?
Timber saw is closer tho, they share the same first ability and Cable.
Yea almost nothing is original in ML

Never forget that Zilong’s old name is Yun Zhao
If you also played league this is hella funny
7
u/Entyyyyy Aug 03 '26
Yep. He also had a gap closing charge and a passive that activates every third BA.. Suspiciously similar to Xin Zhao...
15
u/Budskytol Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26
Yun Zhao is the name of a historical chinese general. Xin Zhao was another less known historical chinese general. LoL used the name Xin Zhao but most of the references point to Yun Zhao as their basis.
Mlbb just used the actual name but then changed it to Zilong, which was a title the real Yun Zhao went by.
Not saying Mlbb didn't copy Lol (really evident with the skillset), but Yun Zhao / Zilong is a common character to include in games with elements of historical china. Similar to Sun (but that's more mythical) and Yu Sun Shin (a historical korean general).
Historical Yun Zhao served the warlord, Liu Bei. Also a commonly referenced figure in books/anime/comics when it comes to historical china.
1
u/Kamu_Sensei Aug 03 '26
Yep, one of the warriors that fought during the three kingdoms era. He's famous for saving liu bei's son at changban when he solo charged at cao cao's troops by himself. Too bad some people may not know him because Guan Yu and LUfkingBU also in that era
1
u/Aimicchi Aug 03 '26
The only reason why MLBB has Zilong/Yun Zhao is that HOK also had Zilong/Zhao Yun since 2015, both were even built as attack speed focused hero just that the HOK version has a cc ult than attack/movement speed buff.
1
u/Aimicchi Aug 03 '26
Actually HOK had it as Zhao Yun since 2015 (Zilong for global release, alternative name to historical Zhao Yun), Yun Zhao is just fitting in English standard.
12
u/Aimicchi Aug 03 '26
All MLBB heroes trace their design and/or skills from heroes in LOL/HOK/AOV and some from DOTA and HON

Even some of their latest skins (like starting around 2024/2025) look like AI-generated garbage.
20
u/Aimicchi Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26
before even replying to this in order to argue, please make some research first
Moontoon started by literally stealing HOK as the base of MLBB, their founder is from Tencent and definitely know about cancelling the global release and going for AOV, so they made their own with stolen assets and even had to copy other IP for Alucard, Akai, Balmond, Franco, any many more in order to dodge lawsuits.
The original map of MLBB is just a slightly altered 2015-2016 map of HOK, even the UI is very similar back then.
During 2018-2024 MLBB focused on copying LOL, then back to HOK by 2025.

u/Ritsukare_Tataban Aug 03 '26
All of them copied DOTA dude.
1
u/Aimicchi Aug 03 '26
Where did dota developers went? Which company made a mobile game about it? After that MLBB just stole and copied everything in the market without any permission or legality.
3
7
u/BloodWarrior3000 Aug 03 '26
They haven't been original since the beginning of time mate. They literally started off as a League of Legends knock off.

u/PikachuStoleMyWife Aug 03 '26
I miss monster designs. Now it's all cutsy face twinks
2
u/Majestic-Ad-7393 Aug 03 '26
Our last monster was Gloo if I'm not mistaken. Since then all been pretty girls and dudes
1
u/Aimicchi Aug 03 '26
They wanna revive MLBB China which failed in just a week.
Bad timing to give out cash rewards irl and in-game when HOK launched a Chinese Pro League skin at the same time, they rushed to MLBB to get free money for that
5
5
u/Redditbingboo Aug 03 '26
Dear God, the same-face syndrome is so strong that some new male and female heroes look similar to one another
5
5
u/ORGNLCollector_John Aug 03 '26
The irony of looking for originality in MLBB when it's a clone of LoL. To the point where a lot of the animations they use are ripped straight out of the files of LoL.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who finds that extremely hilarious
5
5
u/DoctorWhitePrincess Aug 03 '26
They also keep redesigning characters, making everyone look the same, even when they looked very different from each other before😭😭
4
4
4
u/darkzero09 Aug 03 '26
they were never in the first place. they copied everything from league of legends from the start.
4
u/SirKnightsalot_44 Aug 03 '26
And I think It’s in the skins too. I can’t help but notice every other new skin tries to outdo the previous in terms of flashy animations and vibrant colors, all just to end up as what I like to call “unoriginal cosmic-slop”. One of the few heroes that I believe have genuinely creative and well thought of skins that actually interprets the essence of the hero is Grock.
1
u/jarvik Aug 03 '26
After a month or two moonton nerfs the flashiness of new skin to give way to the new one
3
u/sirang_bolpen Aug 03 '26
If given the choice. I believe only beatrix should keep the face card.
I prefer old fanny splash art and voice, but with her new skins, the fierce warrior she had going on is gone now.
Sora deserves a different splash art, subtly showing hos other two forms at least
3
u/WiscLeafalNika Aug 03 '26
Now where do I have seen this before....
Overwatch had this issue
Marvel Rivals had this issue
heck, even Genshin had this issue
Conclusion: It's just... not news anymore
3
u/Aromatic_Flounder_22 Aug 03 '26
This happens on every other game nowadays, look Kiriko from Overwatch lol
3
u/Ok-Wing8372 Aug 03 '26
Is this bait? ML might be the single most copycat game ever made, and proves if you're rich enough you can just do plagiarism
3
u/KneeGearlol Aug 03 '26
havent been original in a long time, the hero designs are either a hot girl, a literal child or a twink femboy

they are now owned by UAE, and are vehemently pro Gen AI, with no pushbacks, it wasn't good before it's not gonna be better. But yeah, let's keep telling people AI is not a big deal 🤷 I'm sure these guys love paying for the same thing over and over again while our natural resources are drained.

This is something called the "same face syndrome", and is definitely NOT something I pulled out of my ass.
To be more serious, I'll make a famous example in a gacha game, named 'FGO'. It's called "Saberface". The term is coined because a whole lot of characters in the Saber class share the same face as the most iconic girl of the series, Saber Artoria. Now, the reason for this is because I'm pretty sure it's the same artist that they commissioned which led to the whole "Saberface Syndrome".
So, really, it's an artist falling back to easier and more familiar designs. And it might be a case of don't fix what isn't broken.

the gaming industry is one of the biggest copy cat industries on the planet. I don't care if its from China or the dev is based in the USA. Everyone copies everyone, of course not verbatim, we can easily accuse moonton for copying, but even Dota, or Leage of Legends is a copy. In the documentary for LOL, they openly said they got the idea from the DOTA that was originally played in warcraft 3.
2
u/Firm-Excitement903 Aug 03 '26
Nothing is original under the sun,I think what you mean is why they're reusing the poses on every splasharts. It's easier and cheap and nobody really cares thtswhy they can get away with it.
2
u/drn_xd Aug 03 '26
It started when they changed my lovely girl vexana into quite literally every other white princess on mobile legends. Sigh

I miss the old fanny splash art, made her look way more serious and hotter. Kagura's too, the old one looks way better. I miss when their splash arts weren't very anime-esque, those made my 14 yo self feel things and fetishes I never knew existed

u/ChunChunMaru_Desu010 Aug 04 '26
Fun facts that i sees something myself is every heroes potrait they has are actually actually all have the exact same poses
And there i was wondering, why can't they make a cooler hero potrait lol

I think this has been a recurring problem for awhile now. The last non human hero released was Chip which was 2 years ago, and before him was Gloo which was 5 years ago.
1
u/Impossible_Bet_5769 Aug 07 '26
Dragonball character designs still work well even if it's technically the same face with different hairstyles. In fact, it creates a signature look for the franchise, so I don't mind the similarities. Same thing with MLBB.

Thats called "same face syndrome" for an artist lmaooo ... not all artist can always draw 100 different faces all the time so this is likely expected for an artist. Do u ever wonder why anime only has a maximum of 10 main characters.... Same face syndrome baby.

MLBB heroes were stolen from league of legends since the start, i keep explaining this and people don't understand.
They take the hero - redesign it to pass copyright and release it as a new hero. Moonton has been sued multiple times by Riot games and there is ongoing.

Same face shape = Not original
Okay so most of the people in this world are copies of each other.
Oh and the use of AI to connect Fanny, Beatrix and Sora's face.
3
u/kagukaguu Aug 03 '26
same face syndrome can be original sure, but it's like the same joke repeated over and over again, might be the funniest thing you heard the first time, but it's ear grating for the 1000th time.

u/Ecchi_Pizza Aug 03 '26
Sure downvote my comment because the truth is often hard to accept for most.

I miss the old fanny with the dark orangish hair and cool voice, now they just princessified her💔🥀

u/ToroAsterion Aug 03 '26
Because Chinese games often prefers princessess and pretty twink boys Because of their so called beauty standards....
I don't even find pretty boys attractive...like....ew
