Weekly Beginner Questions Thread

In order to reduce volume of beginner questions as their own topics in the sub, we will be implementing a weekly questions thread. Post your beginner questions here, including:

"What martial art should I do?"

"These gyms/schools are in my area, which ones should I try for my goals?"

And any other beginner questions you may have.

If you post a beginner question outside of the weekly thread, it will be removed and you'll be directed to make your post in the weekly thread instead.

DISCUSSION "What Should I Train?" or "How Do I Get Started?" Mega-Thread

The previous version of this megathread has been archived, so I’m adding it again.

Active users with actual martial arts experience are highly encouraged to contribute, thank you for your help guys.

Do you want to learn a martial art and are unsure how to get started? Do you have a bunch of options and don't know where to go? Well, this is the place to post your questions and get answers to them. In an effort to keep everything in one place, we are going to utilize this space as a mega-thread for all questions related to the above.

We are all aware walking through the door of the school the first time is one of the harder things about getting started, and there can be a lot of options depending on where you live. This is the community effort to make sure we're being helpful without these posts drowning out other discussions going on around here. Because really, questions like this get posted every single day. This is the place for them.

Here are some basic suggestions when trying to get started:

  • Don't obsess over effectiveness in "street fights" and professional MMA, most people who train do it for fun and fitness

  • If you actually care about “real life” fighting skills, the inclusion of live sparring in the gym’s training program is way more important than the specific style

  • Class schedules, convenience of location, etc. are important - getting to class consistently is the biggest factor in progress

  • Visit the gyms in your area and ask to take a trial class, you may find you like a particular gym, that matters a whole lot more than what random people on reddit like

  • Don't fixate on rare or obscure styles. While you might think Lethwei or Aunkai looks badass, the odds of a place even existing where you live is incredibly low

This thread will be a "safe space" for this kind of questions. Alternatively, there's the pinned Weekly Beginner Questions thread for similar purposes. Please note, all "what should I train/how do I get started" questions shared as standalone posts will be removed, as they really clutter the sub.

DISCUSSION Constraint in Sparring [Kickboxing]

Yesterday I had an ambivalent moment in a sparring session. I was matched with this 40 year old uncle who began punching hard, which is okay but out of nowhere threw a jumping teep with all his might sending me close to some equipment.

I returned a hard but not 100% teep and told him to go lightly, which he completely ignored and threw another hail marry ducking overhand, which I warned him again to go lightly.

At that point I realised this guy had 0 technique and leaving openings left and right, he only repeated two more times the same duck-overhand combo which ended with his head in a headlock.

I remained in the round but just pushed him and threw some light jabs to keep him at bay. For a reason I decided to not attack back and contain my emotions as I didn’t want to participate in his BDSM experiment (he was blissful when he got hit) or risk injury for the other sparring rounds.

Part of me is proud for not losing my temper and felt like a mature fighting mindset (why hurt a guy that obviously cant defend himself yet properly). But another part felt like I acted too passively to not escalate and I should had punished him for his actions.

Have you guys/girls had similar situations and did I react good for the situation?

Cant help but feel a bit of a bitch for not doing him dirty as well.

QUESTION Alternative to boxing

Been boxing for 5 years and still love it, but I've stopped sparring and fighting recently. The head contact wasn't sitting right with me anymore so I'd rather pack it in now than later.

Problem is I've tried keeping my training up and I've just lost all motivation without someone to actually compete against. Bag work on its own gets old fast.
Has anyone come over from boxing or another striking sport and found something that scratches the same itch? I still want to go hard against people, just not with my head on the line. What did you end up doing?

[EDIT]:
I’m okay with contact and maybe some head contact, I just feel the volume of punches to the head was getting too much. I couldn’t rely on a sparring partner not going too hard.

QUESTION Sparring gear

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

My 4 year old just started karate and jui jitsu. Im looking for neon blue sparring gear with a face shield. Our coach told us usually when they are that little he recommends a face shield but I cant find the color blue he wants. I was wondering if anyone knew of a blue one like this with a face shield like in the second picture. It doesnt look like face shield can be added. My 4 year old said he would rather have that color blue color than the face shield. Do you find the face shield to be that important? Do you know of a place that sells this color with a face shield or one can be added. Seems like I'll have to compromise and choose face shield or the color he wants.

QUESTION Anybody know what these are made of or where they come from?

Post image

Edit: magnets are pretty attracted to it.

Edit 2: unfortunately, they chip very lightly when I strike one with another and they sound a little more hollow than a lot of metal. They are still pretty damn painful and durable and undoubtedly for practical use; they could save your life and probably take strikes from another weapon. But the faint chipping has me thinking that the metal it's made with certainly isn't iron or anything very authentic.

My great uncle got these off his friend and gave them to me, and I love them, but I'm curious to know where exactly they come from.

They have "Hokkaido" engraved above the handle, which I think is called the "tsuka."

I'm not sure if they're steel, stainless steel, chrome... I'm not an expert on this stuff.

DISCUSSION McGregor and Nurmagomedov: fighting for fame and money vs fighting for values

Thumbnail youtube.com
0 Upvotes

The McGregor and Nurmagomedov match was one of the greatest examples of a fight that with two completely opposite fighters with different motivations. McGregor obviously believed he was destined to be famous and was fighting for money and recognition. Nurmagomedov was fighting for his personal values and a desire to be excellent. I think both fighters hated losing, but McGregor‘s weakness was that his motivation was shallow. Khabib’s values and reason for fighting fit into his worldview and who he was inside as a person. Aside from technical differences and wrestling being king in the UFC (IMO), When the fight got hard, McGregor didn’t have the depth of purpose to push through and try to win.

Can you think of any other examples of fighters that were so different and created a great matchup?

DISCUSSION I have to open up a conversation! We as alot of work to do on how we treat women

In 2024 my former MMA instructor murdered his wife who I was friends with. She called me 3 hours before she was dead asking me for help but wouldn't tell me what with.

3 hours later her body was found beaten and she was dead.

Tonight I found out one of the most beautiful girls I've ever met in my entire life went to break up with her boyfriend who was a professional boxer. She was found dead recently it's not clear whether she was murdered or not.

I believe he was insanely jealous because he didn't think he could get somebody like her ever again so instead of dealing with his issues he took her from this world.

It hasn't been confirmed it was a murder yet but he had been threatening to kill her and sending her violent pictures of him beating things up until his knuckles were bloody.

And her body was just found so I haven't had the confirmation she was murdered but I'm going to talk to her family later.

We have a real problem.

A handful of years ago Roy Dean Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt was forced out of the bend Oregon community after he stalked one of his employees, a beautiful young woman around town.

War machine beat his ex-girlfriend and these tragedies just keep on happening.

The community does not hold these things accountable and we need to have a serious conversation because I'm just one person and I already know two women who have been killed.

That's not okay.

There needs to be a real conversation on this.

As for why I'm not sharing the names of 2 these women who I know, their families have asked for privacy.

DISCUSSION Yan vs Merab 3 was a war, but two losses in a row for Merab. What's next for him?

Merab won the first two rounds easily, then Yan started touching him up and Merab's takedowns stopped working. After round 3 it was pretty much Yan's fight.

Two losses in a row for Merab for the first time ever. What does he even do from here?

肩靠 "Shoulder Kao" is a close-range Tai Ji technique using the shoulder and whole boby. In this practice, we work on boby connection, balance and structure, timing and distance and relaxed power. The goal is not to push with the shoulder alone, but to let the whole body move together as one. #taijiquan #taichichuan #太极拳 #kaotechnique #靠
