Discussion Stable updates 26.1 recent 6 weeks

As of today the last stable update was Sept. the 7th. Comparing to my long-run observations it is quite long time period of silence in terms of stable updates. I am not used to this pattern of Manjaro stable branch behavior. Is my feeling right, if yes where are the reasons?

Latest PHP updates is quite separate story.

Did you look at the manjaro forum, or at this subreddit before posting?

Yes I navigated to sub-forum releases. It helped me that much I decided to raise this OP.

The latest post (7 sep) in 'announcements' 'stable update' on the manjaro forum, starts with this:

"Hello Manjaro user community, here we have another set of package updates. This marks the second point release of 26.1 series.

This also sets Manjaro Linux into a frozen state for a while until we have finished migrating our Gitlab Instance over to a new Forgejo Instance."

The last post in this subreddit is about the same subject

  1. As clearly stated on the last stable update on the forum posts that everyone should be reading when they update, as well as several posts in this subreddit - the project is being migrated off github to forgejo, and will be in a frozen state until that happens

  2. security updates are being let through, there were several recently, including php, certificates, browsers, etc.

  3. the project is not dead, nor is this unusual. the gaps between stable updates are not a set amount of time, it's "when they are ready". It can be as little as two weeks or as long as two months in my experience. last time there was a long gap, it was because of the migration to plasma 6 I believe.

  4. you can switch to testing or unstable if you are in a hurry to have more recent updates

  5. the whole concept of Manjaro is more stately updates than arch, allowing for more testing behind the bleeding edge. that means a wait between stable updates. those who want immediate updates should use another distro.

Last time I heard it was migration from GitHub to forgejo of the project’s hosting.

Which should be an automatic answer at this point:

I have all this saved up from something like 50 hostile interactions at Reddit about Manjaro.

Manjaro is one of the few non-enterprise desktop Linux distributions backed by a sustainable corporate structure (Manjaro GmbH & Co. KG), paying full-time core developers and securing official hardware partnerships with OEMs like Slimbook and Star Labs.

The perpetual Reddit hostility relies on obvious double standards: expiring an SSL cert is a routine administrative blunder that multi-billion-dollar giants like Microsoft and Spotify have made repeatedly, while the Pamac API issues only made waves because Manjaro built a GUI software manager so good that a huge portion of the broader Arch ecosystem relies on it. Holding back updates for two weeks in testing provides a practical layer of desktop stability, and most of the online blowback is just classic gatekeeping from purists who resent that Manjaro successfully demystified Arch for regular users.

The online panic relies entirely on misinterpreting routine server maintenance and structural upgrades as a crisis. The brief package freeze was standard procedure during a planned backend migration from GitLab to Forgejo—a temporary cutover that has already completed, as proven by updates pushing normally again.

Phil Müller’s note merely clarified his personal availability on community forums was limited while handling administrative duties, while the "Manjaro 2.0 Manifesto" is actually a proactive proposal to restructure the project into a decentralized non-profit association (e.V.) to eliminate single-person bottlenecks and strengthen long-term governance.

Reddit doomposters simply spun standard sysadmin work and organizational maturity into an apocalyptic narrative while actual systems silently pull down updates as usual.

Keep an eye on the official announcements. Keep using your system as you did before. Don't panic.

Manjaro stable branch usually has a release cadence of 2-3 updates per month, but there can be a moratorium on updates for up to 8 weeks in April and October

The next stable branch update release will likely include updates relating to GRUB bootloader that may require manual intervention before rebooting. Manual intervention may also be needed for new versions of Gnome and Plasma

If you followed the storms and troubles around manjaro, there's always been some kind of uncertainty about this project. I stepped away and found more reliable ones. Endeavour, Garuda. Also void where you don't hear anything weird at all, they're just updating the thing since the last iso february 2025 and all runs smooth.

A project with an uncertain reputation—yet I’ve been using it for over 10 years on both my desktop and laptop without any issues; everything works fine. Every distribution has its quirks and occasional problems. No distribution is 100% perfect for every user in the world. Just because something isn’t talked about doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. If you ask any developer from any distribution, you’ll find that problems exist everywhere. If you want to use Manjaro, go right ahead; if you don’t, then move on to something else.
