General Question So, what's next for Manjaro?

It's getting a bit confusing to keep track of what's going on with the distro, so i would appreciate some info from people who know more than me.

- The last stable update had this note in the forum post:

This also sets Manjaro Linux into a frozen state for a while until we have finished migrating our Gitlab Instance over to a new Forgejo Instance.

Anyone knows how this is going? There have been no new package updates on the Stable and Testing branches for almost a month now. I assume this is connected to the migration. Is there any ETA on that? I haven't been able to find any more info.

- Phil M. has been posting this on all the recent update posts:

Note: I’ve super limited time to do Manjaro these days. So expect delayed response from me or none at all …

Is that a reason for concern? I mean, is it even safe to use Manjaro right now? A declaration like this coming from (who I suppose is) the lead developer doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

- A couple of days ago, there was some new development on the Manjaro 2.0 Manifesto thread. It looks promising, but I'm still not sure what exactly it means for the distro and if/how it's connected with the previous two points.

I have all this saved up from something like 50 hostile interactions at Reddit about Manjaro.

Manjaro is one of the few non-enterprise desktop Linux distributions backed by a sustainable corporate structure (Manjaro GmbH & Co. KG), paying full-time core developers and securing official hardware partnerships with OEMs like Slimbook and Star Labs.

The perpetual Reddit hostility relies on obvious double standards: expiring an SSL cert is a routine administrative blunder that multi-billion-dollar giants like Microsoft and Spotify have made repeatedly, while the Pamac API issues only made waves because Manjaro built a GUI software manager so good that a huge portion of the broader Arch ecosystem relies on it. Holding back updates for two weeks in testing provides a practical layer of desktop stability, and most of the online blowback is just classic gatekeeping from purists who resent that Manjaro successfully demystified Arch for regular users.

The online panic relies entirely on misinterpreting routine server maintenance and structural upgrades as a crisis. The brief package freeze was standard procedure during a planned backend migration from GitLab to Forgejo—a temporary cutover that has already completed, as proven by updates pushing normally again.

Phil Müller’s note merely clarified his personal availability on community forums was limited while handling administrative duties, while the "Manjaro 2.0 Manifesto" is actually a proactive proposal to restructure the project into a decentralized non-profit association (e.V.) to eliminate single-person bottlenecks and strengthen long-term governance.

Reddit doomposters simply spun standard sysadmin work and organizational maturity into an apocalyptic narrative while actual systems silently pull down updates as usual.

Thank you for this. I've been using it for 5+ years now and only had one issue on an old install on a laptop I hardly ever use failing to update. NBD honestly. Had some minor Bluetooth issues as well. I will definitely be using it until it is unusable.

Manjaro runs on one of our family laptops for over 7 years, AUR enabled with only 1 small (repaired) issue. It is stable for sure

No way this comment is not written by an LLM.

I wrote it better than someone with their head in their ass, name starts with D......

From what I can see, they have quite a bit of paperwork ahead of them (notary, etc.). That will certainly slow down the whole process, but I wouldn’t write off the entire distribution just yet.

I'm not confused, it works and I see no reason to be even slightly concerned.

Same here. And I run a quite strange rig.

u/klevahh 24d ago

Mine is so strange it doesn't even have a glass side panel o.O

I’m thinking the concern is lack of security updates.

1

u/Plan_9_fromouter_ 24d ago

Isn't the concern security issues targeting the AUR?

These affect Arch Linux and Arch-based distributions (such as EndeavourOS, CachyOS, and Manjaro) and stem from supply chain attacks targeting the AUR.

I didn't know about the migration out of Gitlab, that's good to know since I was wondering too about the unusual delay in updates. Fingers crossed they will complete this soon and we'll start getting regular updates again 🤞

Before I used Manjaro I used Chakra. A much smaller distro that the people left. Still my install kept working for about a year before I moved on. Don't worry about these imagined problems.

1

u/Lapis_Wolf 5d ago

I haven't heard of Chakra

1

u/Complete_Fox_7052 4d ago

It was dissolved in 2022 after languishing for months. I hopped around for a few months and settled with Manjaro

u/Lapis_Wolf 4d ago

any forks?

Just be patient. It goes as fast as it goes. If you want to know more it's best to just ask on the forum and not this doomposter infested subreddit of former disgruntled users.

My analysis right now it is best to wait it out until the nonprofit organization is created and hope that the transfer to the nonproft organization goes smoothly (https://forum.manjaro.org/t/re-stable-update-2026-09-07/189990/7)

Monjaro is my daily driver, I like it. I really hope it doesn't go the way of mandrake

u/_vaxis 24d ago

Personally, I’m waiting until the end of this year and see how everything goes. By then, I will decide if a hop is in order.

It makes sense (regardless of which distro you are using) to know which distro you would switch to if need be.

Do get back to us on your momentous decision.

I do not really know about any of the stuff you are talking about in your post. I did have a recent issue with manjaro where it would not launch/ was not showing graphics when trying to boot, and did not display GRUB menu. But I found others on the manjaro forums having issues with this and it was fixed in a kernel update (there was an issue for Nvidia card users). For me Manjaro has been great as someone who wants access to AUR apps, and built in Nvidia support, this was the first time for me I had an issue with it. Through this issue I learned I can hold shift while booting which got me into the grub menu and let me rollback the kernel and then once I was in I was able to update arch to the version fixing the Nvidia issue. So for me I think Im going to stick with Manjaro for a while, unless I end up switching to a non Nvidia card.

I'm on the unstable repo. No issues here. Regular updates.

Atrasos fazem parte, eu estou super satisfeito com o Manjaro. Excelente distro que não deixa na mão. Uso o xfce com o Cosmic e funciona perfeitamente.

I switched last yeah to openSuSe Tumbleweed and never looked back

2

u/A_Harmless_Fly 24d ago

What GUI package manager do you use?

2

u/Kurogane1412 24d ago

Discover if I am lazy or want an flatpak but mostly I do it in the CLI sudo zypper install

1

u/onedevelop 14d ago

Ninguno decente, solo cli

1

u/onedevelop 14d ago

Como va lo de packman?

1

u/Kurogane1412 14d ago

I didn't have a problem but I am also not sure if I was using something from the repository at all as other had problems.

1

u/onedevelop 14d ago

1

u/Kurogane1412 14d ago

If something doesn't work from the repositories just use an Flatpak version of that App that will include the non free bits needed most of the time.

I have Smplayer with MPV installed via Flatpak and used that mostyl in openSuSe Tumbleweed but I do not know About streaming services as I don't use them at all if there are at problems the standard Firefox should be able to play netflix and other streaming services .

Also I am now more distro Agnostic on my Gaming Desktop openSuSe Tumbleweed,Thinkpad T14 Gen 3 I have Fedora 44 and my sadly now halftop Tuxedo Pulse 15 Gen 2 Tuxedo OS and on my Servers Debian,Fedora and Proxmox so use what ever works for you bt there always ways to make things work on every distro!

It's not dead until the servers go down... But given how slow the response was when the SSL certs straight up expired a while back, I don't think Manjaro is a distro I can put much trust in anymore. Better off with one of the dozens of mildly more modern Arch wrappers to have cropped up since, or home rolling anything else with support, imo

12

u/Plan_9_fromouter_ 24d ago edited 24d ago

That is why millions abandoned MS--when they were slow to renew their own SSL certs. LOL.

-1

u/Scary-Advisor8197 24d ago

personally, I have reinstalled 2 of my 3 machines to Slackware.

Manjaro being an official GmbH means they will need to comply with the age verification bullsh17 and let's see how that goes.

-2

u/Drak3 24d ago

Perhaps it's coincidental, but I just jumped ship to endeavor OS. For me it was the repeated ssl certificate expirations for the site. I just can't see things going as well as I would hope they are. IMO, ssl auto-renewal is not hard.

I would bet you don't even use Manjaro anyway. LOL.

Stopped using if after updates screwed up my system, switched to CachyOS a year ago, never looked back until today I saw this forum.

6

u/wokan 24d ago

If you're going to switch operating systems every time one screws up an update your best bet is to switch to TempleOS.
