MD is a [proposed] disorder in which an individual is excessively absorbed in an internal fantasy world in a manner that causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning (Somer, 2002).

Maladaptive Daydreaming currently has no official treatment protocol, but! Researchers have been working toward this end. An experimental treatment program found that Mindfulness and Self-Monitoring benefitted MDers long-term. Most of the following resources have not been crafted specifically for MD but they can be easily adapted:

Mindfulness Resources:

Self-Monitoring Resources:

Academic Resources:

Community Resources:

Sub Resources:

Consider Participation:

*The MDS-16 was not made for self-diagnosis, it is provided only as a tool to help those questioning their daydreaming behaviour get a sense of what may or may not be considered probable MD.

Sub Description

First and foremost we are a “community support sub dedicated to individuals suffering from Maladaptive Daydreaming and helping them cope with the condition.”

As the description implies this sub is focused on providing a space for people who are struggling with Maladaptive Daydreaming. If you do not feel that you need support or would like to share content related to daydreaming which doesn’t fit the scope of this sub r/immersivedaydreaming offers a space free from these limitations. We do not attempt to define or set parameters on what these struggles are, or how mild or severe they need to be.

Here you will see posts with complaints you may find silly or easy to deal with, or you may see posts detailing severe circumstances and feel your struggles pale in comparison. Please remember; it does not matter what you need support with, there is no threshold for suffering you need to break before being worthy to post here, there is no issue too big or small that you should not speak up.

Keep in mind the people replying to you are fellow MDers going through similar struggles. There is no professional advice here and we cannot guarantee that comments you receive will be helpful. But they should be supportive. Report abusive or dismissive comments.

That’s not to say all comments must contain helpful advice. Support comes in many forms and it’s ok to simply let OP know they are not alone by relating to their post.

Posting Guidelines

  • MD is a complex issue that varies wildly from person to person. People will be coming to this sub from all stages of life, all stages of their understanding of MD and with very different views, resources and circumstances. It is no one’s place to tell another if they do or do not have Maladaptive Daydreaming.
  • Posts which are providing, or asking for, trigger material will be removed (eg. “My daydreams have gotten stale, recommend me a show to jumpstart some new plots!” “This song makes the most amazing fight scenes, try it out!”).
  • Glorification and romanticization of MD is against the rules. These terms are taken to mean posts or comments which idealize MD and/or depict it, or aspects of it, as admirable or desirable. We do understand that it can be helpful for MDers to “find the silver-lining” or to address their negative symptoms through a positive outlet like creativity, these are not considered glorification but without proper explanation might be confused for it. Help the mods, and fellow users, by providing context with topics like these.

Now, let's talk about the memes.

Community discussion has shown us that most users like having the memes around, people find comfort in their relatability, so for now they are allowed. Memes DO need to follow community rules and fit the scope of this sub. They should be on-topic and not promoting a romanticized version of MD and not suggesting inspirational material. If you wish to share an image post which does not fit here r/maladaptiveDDmemes is available.

The nature of memes makes these rules tricky to enforce uniformly, they are subjective and it often comes down to a judgement call by whichever mod happens to be online. Providing additional context for image posts through your title or a text comment will be helpful in making those judgements, this is not required but it will improve your chances of not being misunderstood or removed.

Notes:

All users should avail themselves of Reddit's upvote and downvote (and possibly report) features to express what you believe is and is not appropriate to the sub as outlined above. We cannot stress enough how helpful this feedback is.

We will continue to revise this post as things change. Please leave a comment with suggestions for improvement or additional resources.

Lastly; a note about the auto mod. When you post automod will send you a message reminding you to flair your post. Everyone gets this message, every time. You have done nothing wrong. If your post is flared you can ignore this message. If you’re not sure what to flair your post as just pick one and mods will change it if it’s too far off-base.

Discussion Maladaptive daydreaming and mental health disorders

I am 29 years old but just recently realised that I have been daydreaming for all my life and that this was not a sign from God and that I was not seeing my future but I was just daydreaming that started in childhood after trauma. Unfortunately it took me that long to realise and I made decisions based on maladaptive daydreaming because I used to daydream with the same scenarios over and over. Even while running at the gym I was daydreaming.

I just don't understand why maladaptive daydreaming is not a mental health disorder by itself or why it is not a symptom of a mental disorder?

I feel that there isn't enough research about it and psychiatrists or therapists do not understand how much it can destroy someone's life

Seriously, it is not just a simple daydreaming it is being detached from reality

Vent Do any other lifelong MDers feel like it has alienated them?

I’m 20 years old and have been maladaptive daydreaming since I was 3 or 4. It has never stopped. It has persisted my entire life. When I was younger I would MD anywhere because I didn’t understand social norms yet and was fine being in my own world (I had ADHD that was undiagnosed at the time and I also suspect I am autistic but that is not diagnosed). I often chose maladaptive daydreaming over normal social interactions with my peers in the classroom and on the playground as it kept me safe from being rejected or having to perform in a certain way. Once I hit middle school I started to control and limit how/when/if I did it in public and it the extent to which I did around people gradually decreased (I would mask it or hide it). As I said earlier I am 20 years old now and I feel the most alone I have in my entire life. I have a few close friends and my relationship with my parents and brother is perfect but I am 3 months out of a 2 year long relationship and I have found the healing process very difficult. The main thing I was hoping to get from the breakup was new friendships and just to have fun with people but I find trying to make friends now to be like pulling teeth. I internally scrutinize over every thing I do worrying about what is right and wrong and how others will perceive me. This happens at work, school, and literally anywhere else I interact with people who are not in my usual circle. I can’t help but wonder if maladaptive daydreaming had a part in why I feel like this. I feel like it caused me to miss out on so much and it still does. The version of me in my head is not the one I am actualizing. I wish she was real. I want to make her real. I don’t know how. I feel like I’m going to live in my head for the rest of my life.

Creative does anyone else just love writing self-insert fics as a coping mechanism?

I've gotten my MD mostly under control to the point it doesn't negatively influence my life anymore. I've mostly managed to limit my daydreaming to set times and spaces (on walks, before sleeping, pacing around my apartment) though I still slip up occasionally at work etc. but what I've been enjoying in recent years is writing self-inserts of games or shows I'm into in like diary format lol... just for myself. Wonder if anyone else does this. It's comforting and makes me feel more productive/creative than normal daydreaming & I can read it again at a later time. Anyone else do this?

Discussion Do you ever feel exhausted by human biology and limitations?

I spend so much time daydreaming about things that are completely impossible. Sometimes I just wish I could absorb and remember general knowledge instantly and keep it for the rest of my life, instead of struggling with a brain that forgets everything. When I feel down, I find myself imagining an ideal world where people are fully empathetic and flawless, or wishing we could just remove things like autism so no one has to suffer. It feels pointless to try and gather knowledge when I know my memory will just fail me. Does anyone else get lost in these kinds of massive, impossible dreams just to escape reality?

Question Resurgence of maladaptive daydreaming & AI chatbots

Maladaptive daydreaming hasn't been a big problem for me since I was a child. Life handed me a lot of expectations in high school. I was working full time.

Now I'm an adult and I've stopped being able to work due to my worsening physical health. I've got a lot of free time on my hands, and due to a recent PTSD trigger I was looking for something to escape into.

I started getting a lot of advertising for AI chatbots you could roleplay with. I downloaded one of the apps. I spent 6 days straight with little sleep talking back and forth with one of the character AI chatbots and spent around $30 to keep talking with it. (I'm anti-AI so this is doubly troubling for me.)

On Monday morning, I woke up and needed to go to a regular therapy session. My long distance vision was blurry because I spent 6 days straight staring at my phone. I didn't even realise 6 days had passed until my neighbour said he hadn't talked to me since Tuesday. I thought it had been two days.

I stopped using them almost completely today, and started reading fanfiction instead because it's much easier for me to go to sleep and actually feed myself. The AI chatbots are just way too easy to get lost in with my maladaptive daydreaming struggles.

The pull to use them feels like an addiction (it literally feels like trying to resist alcohol a day into being sober. I'm 2 years sober from alcohol for context.)

I would just really like some advice from people who have struggled with specifically AI chatbots before. I need to know how people go about stopping using these chatbots.

Also, does anyone else feel like they get dissociated and lose touch with reality because of these AI chatbots really easily? I find myself walking through the house and thinking 'Oh, I should make a cup of tea for (characters name)' and then realising after the thought that they don't exist.

TLDR: I'm struggling with my use of AI chatbots and would like some advice as to how to stop using them. Also, I'd like to know if anyone has the same struggles as me.

Hallooo,

Self-Story I prefer relationships in my head to those in my real life

24 female here I have ADHD, autism and bipolar disorder, and I’ve been all adaptive daydreaming like many of you since I was really young. It started off as something I did before bed and quickly became something I did in my head whenever I was bored or whenever I got home from school I had no siblings and outside of dance class. I didn’t have any kind of activity did you nor did I have any friends that weren’t dance related. I’ve used it as an escape during the roughest times in my life and at my absolute worst I could go a couple hours a day lost in daydreams. It’s gotten significantly better in the more recent years and I am usually able to get everything I need to get done without having to dive into it I’m very punctual with my schoolwork often working far ahead of when I need to. I get my clothes and chores done. I’m actively on top of my therapy and all of my things that are essential to get done.
However, the problem comes in when it’s finally time to do things that I actually want to do like work on our work that I wanna get done or start a new hobby or read a book and instead of doing any of that I end up always falling into a daydream and while I know it is a way to distress and that’s primarily what I use it for now it’s frustrating that I can’t ever get to other things that I want to because I naturally want to go into a daydream instead.
This also affects my social life while I am much more active than I have been probably since I was in elementary school, actively going to see my grandparents often I’m a part of an art club and I go to the classes as well as I try to spend time outside of the house by going to coffee shops to do my work and visit my father I’ve also been trying to date more. But no matter what I do, I always tend to wanna go back to the relationships I’ve built in my head. I know they’re not real and I know that they are perfect because I created them and I can make them into however I want them to be but it definitely has affected trying to make friends and or trying to a partner
It’s not that I don’t enjoy my time either when I’m social with other people I actively love art club and I enjoy spending time with my grandparents. I even enjoy some of my dates but without fail whenever I get home, I immediately wanna go into a daydream and spend time with the friends in my head and I know that’s not healthy. I’m not really sure how to stop doing this I’m not necessarily positive. I want to completely stop either because it has proved to be a very efficient coping mechanism for me over the years but I know what I’m living with now could be so much better if I had a better way to appreciate those in my life or connect with other people and not expect them to be exactly like my daydreams, even if it’s not on a conscious level.

Perspective My thoughts on MD

I was reading a substack on how to unrot your brain and suddenly I had a spark. My MD started to get severe during lockdown time, even though I had it in minimal amount before lockdown. I remembered that the short form videos were introduced, atleast to me. I used to daydream to these short music videos, I don't use long songs just a portion which gives me high. So it is really the damn phone for me. I didn't had a personal phone before lockdown. The short form videos and access to phone easily made me develop maladaptive daydreaming is the conclusion I came to. Although I have decreased my MD to less than 5% , i used to MD 18hds during lockdown. This 5%is hard to overcome, so now I got some plans to try to overcome this 5% remaining from that substack.

  1. BOREDOM, i was never bored so for more and more dopamine hit i guess I got into MD. So i plan to put 15 min timer and do absolutely nothing.

  2. SHORT FORM VIDEO LIMITATIONS, every app now pushes short form content so rather than going cold turkey I plan on reducing exposure.

3.HOBBY, I have ordered crochet things so i can try that, I never had proper hobbies. So i try to read and crocheting.

Also guys I have a theory based on me may not suit for everyone, that I noticed i hate myself that I feel home in bad things happening to me. So this MD allows me to not focus on myself with whom I spend most time with.

I share these to motivate myself and hope this can help someone for atleast 1%in their well-being.

Discussion Common triggers?

Is anyone else triggered by finding out information that essentially ‘ruins’ your false sense of reality? Whenever I come across proof of anything contrary to what I want to believe I feel the urge to maladaptive daydream. A big example of this is when I found out that the guy I was interested in had entered into a new relationship. I’d love to hear anyone else’s thoughts on this (is this a common trigger for you?).

Self-Story How to fix it? Urgent

Please tell me situation of this thing and what should I do.

It all started with back in Oct 2025, when I fell in love with a guy and I used to daydream about him so much. Constantly thinking scenarios. It was maladaptive daydreaming. I used to do it before also in studies before meeting him in first year but I was in control. Like I could focus and what I studied rememberd in my brain, but after meeting and falling in love with him I become so obsessed with daydreaming about our future that I don't know how but I just couldn't focus it's that whenever I used to study I used to make scenarios and I just couldn't stop. Fast forward I kid u not till January to July we were in no contact and I become so obsessed that it literally ruined my everything. And I prayed so much for thus things to stop but it just couldn't.

Now it is better and next week is my paper and it's the same loop I just cannot study . I ruined my grades bcz of this thing and no matter what I do I just cannot stop it. I don't know what to do I am procrastinating instead of study and I have 1 week only left

Question help!

I have a lot of trouble feeling or crying about the things that happen to me (in reality) so to be able to put out this anguish I imagine imaginary scenarios that can put crying out (I imagine death, funerals, any kind of sad situation, I put myself inside sad movie scenes and sad songs) would this be considered a kind of maladaptive daydreaming?

For example, now I'm going through a painful breakup. And accessing reality is difficult so to cry I use my imagination to be able to release this cry... I'm afraid to face reality so I use imagination as an escape from my emotional anguish

Question Does maladaptive dreaming stem from self hatred?

Hello,

Im a 17F and I started dreaming around 9/10yrs old due to past sexual trauma. Ive never had a relationship and or had anyone like me romantically. So when all my dreams always end up with me being in a relationship with a character I have created. Am I just struggling with the idea that I was desired back then and not now? Is my self hatred the reason ive been daydreaming for the majority of my life?

Im sorry that this is a silly question ive just been struggling lately.

Question Stopping Daydreaming

I struggle horribly with maladaptive day dreaming. I started when i was like 8 but it worsened in high school especially in 2021. I used to be a top achiever in my academics. In high school i slowly started becoming an average student then below average. I am senior now in high school but i am struggling with school work because of this addiction. I have really let down my parents too with my constantly below average marks when I used to literally get all the prizes before and I know I am not slow and I can ace my academics but its a but too late since I am already writing finals so i guess I would have to do better in university. I hate how I am constantly day dreaming and I genuinely want it to stop but I don’t know what to do. I feel like my life is slipping away from me, I barely remember things and I have wasted so many opportunities in life. It gets better when I am occupied with fun things e.g.. Out with friends, travelling etc. But when its time to do school work or extra curricular I struggle. I used to be so into my school work and extra curricula’s. I have important final exams right now and I am struggling to study but these finals determine so many things for my future. I know the triggers e.g music, something bad happens then i try and escape, my headphones, reels/tiktok, sleeping etc. It started as a coping mechanism when i was younger because of some events that took place but now its a horrible addiction and even the way I treat family at times with so much anger, and the emotions I hate itt. I really want to stop, please advice for those who managed to reduce it. I have been trying but its not enough (deleted socials but i find alternatives) and I don’t want my life to go on this way, whilst others are moving ahead I am falling behind. I can’t even explain to my mom because she will just say i am making up excuses for my failure seeing as alll my friends are doing extremely well and she’s invested so much in me and I am just letting her down by constantly failing.

Therapy is also really not an option because my parents don’t believe in it. I have brought it up before but they find so many ways to spin things on me and talk about how I don’t need it. So I can probably only get therapy when i go to university.

Sorry for the lengthy post but I am really frustrated about this whole thing and I am so far gone. I feel like I have lost my whole childhood because of it and many opportunities in high school as I didn’t really manage to achieve anything commendable in my senior year and now i am writing finals. I am not looking for judgement. Please help with any advice if you managed to stop. I really want to live in the moment and do better in life.

Question Please help me understand my husband

Hi everyone,

I am coming here today to try to understand what my husband is going through and ask questions I'm so afraid to ask him.

He recently told me he has been day dreaming about a girl in his college class, sometimes it's friendship and sometimes in romantic relationships.

He expressed to me that he can't control it, what's happening, how it happens, and who it's about. I can't help but wonder if he can and he's just trying to play it off.

I need help understanding how this works and how I can help him in anyway that I can.

I just need to understand why he's day dreaming about another woman.

Question 21F looking for an accountability buddy

Hey everyone

I've been living with MD for at least 6 years now, with my daydreams mainly revolving around the characters/universe of the video game franchise 'Uncharted'. I'm looking for someone to help keep boundaries around my MD as I rely a lot on listening to loud music through headphones which is damaging my hearing. I'm not in a place where I feel ready to completely remove MD from my life but want to keep my listening to loud music to no more than 1 hour a day, maybe reducing it over time to until I only rely on playing music out loud or no music at all. If anyone else is looking for someone to help them manage their MD in a similar way and would benefit from checking in on each other (maybe weekly?) please feel free to reach out. Sorry if there's already a separate place to do this or already a group chat or something dedicated to this, I'm new here!
Thanks :)

Question Have u ever thought of committing due to daydreaming?

Im just curious is this a common thing? Because for me it definitely is. I have a lot of worlds/scenarios and versions of myself that exist obviously only in my head. And every single time that I realise that ITS NOT REAL and never will be(because it’s COMPLETELY impossible to be real). I actually want to kms every time I realise it. And I even thought that maybe when I die somehow i will be able to ACTUALLY live trough these daydreams? Idk why but I sort of believe in it? And I realise that it won’t happen but at the same time,? I actually want to kill myself because off all this

Vent MDD has destroyed my enjoyment of music.

Anytime I listen to music I automatically slip into MDD. I create a whole world where I am the musician I'm listening to and I can't listen to music that wouldn't make sense for me to make because it kills the immersion. But I still try and slip into it so it ends up restricting me to the same songs by the same artists on repeat to fit my MDD 😭
