Announcement: Paywalled Election Coverage is Temporarily Suspended

Now through Election Day, November 3, 2026, moderators will only allow election-related content that is accessible without a subscription to be posted to r/maine.

If content is behind a paywall, it may be posted so long as it is accompanied by:

- A working publisher-issued gift link.

- A working archive link providing access to the article.

- Article text included in the post body, subject to Reddit's sitewide rules.

Posts that do not meet these accessibility requirements may be removed until an accessible version is provided.

This rule applies equally to coverage of all candidates, parties, campaigns, and election-related issues.

This suspension only covers election-related coverage. All other paywalled content is fine, subject to existing r/maine rules.

We also ask for your help in reporting posts that do not meet this measure.

The suspension is an effort to reduce the number of reports, complaints, and arguments resulting from users speculating about the contents of paywalled content based on headlines. With growing public attention focused on Maine's elections, we believe everyone should have the same opportunity to participate in resulting conversations.

Thanks to you all continuing to keep r/maine an informed and accessible place for all discussion.

He always talks about coming from humble beginnings because he is trying to exploit the Maine Everyman archetype. The 12,000 school teacher single mom narrative. Well maybe she made 12,000 because it was 1970 and WAYNE Maine. He is leaving out the part when he moved to Maine at age 10 he moved to a 90 acre lake property called Sky Ranch in Wayne Maine. He had a private plane with airstrip. Look it up online because it's now a solar farm.

Also his mom who was highly educated as seemed lovely comes from money. She is from Scarsdale NY her family has been summering in Maine since 1800s.

An (apparently) private citizen paid for the ad pictured here to run in the Press Herald.

I think it’s an accurate and concise explanation of what we as voters are facing.

Like it or not, the Maine Senate race will be pivotal to control of the Senate. Our votes matter.

If that private citizen reads here, thank you.

Judge frees all 6 defendants in Maine’s 1st federal health care fraud case since 2019

Federal prosecutors bringing Maine’s first healthcare fraud case of its kind since 2019 failed Tuesday to persuade a judge to jail any of the six people accused of billing Medicaid for services that were never provided.

Faysal Kalayaf Manahe, 51, his wife, Noora Abd, 37, and four others are charged in an indictment unsealed Tuesday with running the scheme through Community Home Health Care, a South Portland agency Abd owns and operates. Prosecutors have not yet said how much of the more than $600,000 MaineCare paid the company was obtained through fraud.

The arrests come a week before the Nov. 3 election featuring a toss-up U.S. Senate race in Maine and after months of President Donald Trump’s administration casting the state as a haven for Medicaid fraud. Federal prosecutors had not filed a criminal health care fraud case in Maine since 2019, according to a Bangor Daily News review of court records.

The new case centers on an interconnected group of defendants. In late June, state health officials suspended MaineCare payments to Abd’s company. That same day, they also cut off Decent Health Care, an Augusta agency that Kalayaf Manahe helped form in 2018, according to corporate filings. A suspension notice shows that the company was also accused of billing for services it did not provide.

Neither state nor federal officials would say whether those cases are related.

“I can’t talk about whether there are other investigations or a linkage between the two,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew McCormack said.

The unsealed indictment accused Kalayaf Mahane, Abd and four others of allegedly participating in a scheme that involved creating fake entries in a software design to log personal care and respite services, then billing MaineCare for services that were not actually provided. Prosecutors also allege that after Abd and Kalayaf Mahane learned they were under federal investigation in June, they pressured someone who knew about the fraud scheme not to speak with law enforcement.

The arrests perplexed lawyers, some of whom seemed caught off guard that the government had suddenly moved to lock up their clients for a nonviolent crime. One lawyer noted in court that the indictment was handed up last week but unsealed on Tuesday.

“The timing of this indictment so close to the midterm elections is interesting,” Thomas Marjerison, a lawyer for Kalayaf Manahe, said Tuesday as he left federal court in Bangor. “We look forward to our day in court and we’re going to prove that Faysal [Kalayaf Manahe] did nothing wrong.”

Marjerison declined to say whether federal prosecutors are also looking at Decent Health Care. Michael Conley, one of two attorneys for Abd and her company, also declined to comment Tuesday. A representative for Attorney General Aaron Frey, whose office helps investigate health care fraud, declined to comment on the case.

Vice President JD Vance singled out Gov. Janet Mills over fraud during a May visit to Bangor. In August, Dr. Mehmet Oz, who leads the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, claimed without citing a source that 90% of Maine’s Medicaid billing was fraudulent.

Earlier this month, Frey’s office mistakenly sent news outlets a memo showing state prosecutors were frustrated by federal delays in at least two cases involving nearly $2 million in potential losses to taxpayers. Tuesday’s case was not one of them.

All six are charged with health care fraud conspiracy. Abd and Kalayaf Manahe are also charged with obstruction, and Mohammed Alkhalaf, 41, is charged with lying to an FBI agent by saying he had not created entry logs for anyone but himself. The other defendants are Adel Al Rashid, 47, his wife, Sura Almohammed, 47, and Ether Alyaseen, 46, the couple’s landlord.

Supporters of the defendants and multiple federal agents filled the courtroom’s benches at times during nearly six hours of hearings in Bangor.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas Scott asked that all six be held without bail, detailing each defendant’s ties to the Middle East and their assets as he argued they could flee the country. But Jonathan Goodman, Alyaseen’s attorney, called the argument that his client would sell his properties and flee to Iraq with his wife and two children “preposterous.”

During Abd’s hearing, Scott said the obstruction charge is supported by witnesses and a recording of a conversation between Kalayaf Manahe and a government witness. But Kristine Hanly, Abd’s other attorney, said nothing Scott described about obstruction involved Abd.

In a court filing, Conley argued there was no basis to jail Abd, who is pregnant with her fourth child. He questioned why agents moved to arrest her now when she had known about the investigation since June and had been indicted days earlier.

U.S. Magistrate Judge John Nivison released all six. They were ordered not to contact one another except for the married couples, and Nivison ruled that Alyaseen may communicate with Al Rashid and Almohammed through a third party.

Tuesday was not Kalayaf Manahe’s first time in federal court. He and three other home health care agency managers were indicted in 2022 on charges they agreed to fix pay rates and not poach each other’s workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. He was later acquitted.

Thomaston Farm Turkey Theft

Around 2am on Tuesday 10/27, a dark pickup truck with loud exhaust was heard and seen on camera leaving Grace Pond Farm in Thomaston. They took several broad breasted white turkeys and damaged the fence, scattering much of the remaining flock. Apparently this truck has been seen on camera in relation to at least one other robbery, so I am posting here in hopes this rings any bells.

If you hear of anyone in the coming days who has suddenly acquired a large amount of turkeys (or their meat), please report to the Thomaston PD and/or Grace Pond. No farmer deserves this, but Gregg and Rhiannon are top-tier people and are among those who deserve this the least.

Thanks!

News Shipwreck found in Gulf of Maine more than 80 years after WWII sinking

Thumbnail

The SS Cornwallis was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time when it was sunk by a German U-boat in the Gulf of Maine in December 1944, claiming 43 lives.

As for the shipwreck’s discovery off Mount Desert Rock this summer, the timing was impeccable.

Eight divers based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire — the Nomad Exploration Team — located the Canadian vessel nearly 400 feet below the surface in July and announced their find Tuesday.

The team began its search for the Cornwallis in 2019, seeking to locate one of the largest unfound shipwrecks left in New England and bring renewed attention to an eight-decade-old tragedy.

They were moments away from missing it completely.

It’s not the team’s first major discovery — it found the William H. Machen Collier off the coast of Portsmouth in 2017 and the USS Eagle 56 off Cape Elizabeth a year later — but members told the Portland Press Herald this month that locating the Cornwallis prompted some of their most daunting dives to date.

Read the rest on the Press Herald.

Question Dear Maine residents, I need help from germany! Can you get me a book?

Post image

My gf has american/scottish roots and would like to know more about her family. So I took the challenge to find that book for her.. and failed. I searched for days and thought that amazon will sell it again by chance, but no luck yet.

I got the ISBN and found out that it's nearly impossible to get a copy in germany. I don't even need a german version, it's just such a "small" book that it won't be a bestseller.. even in USA as it seems.

Sooo I thought that maybe someone in Maine who has that book or access to it would be able to sell it to me as a digital copy or smth like that. Anyways.. help is appreaciated!

Thanks for reading.

Tldr: Book from photo is needed in germany
