Getting Started New to Machine Knitting

Post image

So I picked up a Brother KH890 with a garter stitch carriage and a ribber at a recent fiber festival. Any recommendations for resources would be great. She needs a good cleaning, the seller gave me a new sponge bar but it’s technically too long for the machine. I won’t have room to set her up until I sell my looms but I’m hoping that won’t take long.

You’ll probably want to ensure you have the manuals (can usually download if not there) - good the check ahead of time if you have all the parts you should

We did that at the show. Everything looked like it was there per the manual plus a lace carriage too. The only thing I think I don’t have is a pattern punch? I do have the manual and she had the brother knitting techniques book as well so I bought that too.

Hi, it looks like you are new to machine knitting.

There is some helpful information within the wiki You can also find a direct link in the Community Guide. If this is a new-to-you machine that is a Silver Reed, Singer, Studio, Juki, Empisal, Brother, or KnitKing, and the sponge has not been replaced yet, that's the first thing you should check out.

You might want to take a look around. And Welcome!

I’ve had very good luck with this seller and they’ve been very responsive. You might want to ask how long the sponge bars are. If they are too long, it means you can’t close the lid, which might not be a problem if you aren’t putting the machine away.

Along with the pattern you might want to get some punchcard pattern books. There is also one for the garter carriage available. There are some posted online but the quality of the images isn’t great. The print ones can be somewhat expensive. I don’t know anything about this seller, but here’s an example-

And if you didn’t get extra punchcards or a punch with your machine, that same seller also sells them.

I was on bond machines before and i started a couple of months ago with brother, it's really cool, once you get the hang of it the results are great. I'm half way through my first piece.
