Hi everyone!
I own a 2021 Mustang Mach-E (SYNC 4A) and, as great as the car is, Ford has left a lot of untapped potential on the software side. Compared to competing systems on the market, SYNC 4A suffers from preventable lag, artificial limitations, and zero flexibility for the end user.
More and more automotive communities are successfully gaining root access, sideloading custom packages, and jailbreaking their infotainment systems (just like what happened historically with SYNC 3 via FMods, or across VAG and Tesla platforms). Today, thanks to modern decompilation tools and AI-assisted code analysis, reverse engineering and modding are far more accessible than ever.
I’d like to put together a small working group to dig deep into the system and see how far we can push it.
For example: Android Auto / CarPlay Maps on the Instrument Cluster (IPC)
Right now, the IPC only receives standard turn-by-turn prompts. The goal would be to enable full navigation video streaming (Google Maps, Waze, Apple Maps) directly onto the digital cluster behind the steering wheel, similar to what’s seen on more open platforms or native implementations.
Other interesting features and tweaks to explore:
* UI Optimization & Responsiveness: Strip out unnecessary transitions and animations to make the 15.5" display feel genuinely fluid and snappy.
* Custom Layouts & Themes: Gain the ability to customize accent colors, pinned on-screen widgets, and tile layouts without stock design constraints (the S650 Mustang, for instance, offers selectable cluster themes and a customizable IPC layout).
* App Sideloading: Enable running native background utilities or third-party apps beyond the handful of default options provided by Ford.
* Advanced Telemetry Integration: Build custom on-screen dashboards to monitor real-time net SoC, battery pack temperature, instant power output/regen (kW), and charging curves without relying on external OBD dongles and dedicated phone apps.
* Quality of Life (QoL) Tweaks: Automatically bypass annoying startup pop-ups, improve 360° camera behavior, and add quick toggles for functions currently buried deep in submenus (1-Pedal Drive, drive modes, etc.).
If you have experience with reverse engineering, embedded Android/QNX, automotive CAN/Ethernet protocols (BroadR-Reach), or FORScan / As-Built coding—or if you just want to help test (I honestly wouldn't know where to start on my own), analyze firmware files, and bounce ideas around—let's discuss it below or feel free to DM me.
