Discussion Shane Gillis discussed SNL joke at Dave Chappelle show in Austin last night
Saw Dave Chappelle at Moody Center in Austin last night, and Shane Gillis came out as a surprise opener (Shane lives in Austin). The first 1/3 of his bit was all discussing the SNL joke. He seemed visibily shaken and humbled by the backlash. I wouldn't say he explicitly apologized (he did not ever say "im sorry"), but he was clear that he understood why people were mad at him. If anything, I felt that he was trying to work through it on stage with us in real time.
He did do a bit about how people think he's a republican but he's definitely voting democrat and made a lot of joke's at trump's expense. He said that people think he's republican primarily because he doesn't have a problem being friends with republicans. Dave Chappelle also did a bit about how he is supporting democrats not republicans.
Anyway, not saying y'all should forgive him (especially since he hasn't asked for forgiveness). But his SNL women's gym clothing joke was a pretty big national headline that he had been mostly quiet about until now, so thought you might be interested.
I have no links because this was a "no phone" show, so no video exists that I'm aware of.

Discussion Stop trying to make Dakota Johnson happen.
When I saw who was hosting I was confused about the choice but willing to give it a shot ( I've seen every episode ). The monologue was confusing and the jokes were falling flat and I called it a night. Now today seeing all the feedback on Dakota I'm just wondering at what point do they stop bringing her back?
I know it's all about who you know and that has opened doors for her but at what point do people in casting realize she doesn't have the skill to carry anything and the audience doesn't want to suffer through her boring performances?

Discussion Grace Reiter is the first SNL cast member born after 2000, born in 2001.
This is also technically the first time that SNL has announced two new hires since Pete Davidson and Michael Che in S40 (Leslie Jones would be added a month later).

Discussion This isn’t funny anymore
This administration of pure cruelty should no longer be normalized with “satire”, we are well past that point. this shit isn’t funny anymore.

Discussion Does anyone else feel like tonight’s episode was wildly out of touch?
I get that SNL has many moving parts, but after today's news, I just feel like they made some really bad choices. Starting with another Trump Cold Open filled with ICE jokes and them immediately starting a monologue bragging about how wealthy you are, flaunting an expensive birthday party and expensive house in Miami is just so incredibly tone-deaf and egotistical.
They had the chance to stand up in front of a national audience and wasted it. Previous hosts have addressed the elephant in the room at the start, which I feel helped alleviate the tension and ease into the comedy. I remember the first show back after 9/11, they had a beautiful moment that helped unite the country and eased our burdens. Instead, now they start the show often with softball political cold opens that no one looks forward to.
I thought maybe since "One Battle after Another" was a revolutionary film, the actress who played the revolutionary would at least take a stand. But instead, I had to sit through a monologue that was just a long string of brags disguised as jokes. I get being excited about your accomplishments, but people are really struggling these days. Going on national TV and bragging about how rich you are (and have always been) was one of the most egotistical displays I have ever seen.
Today was just a really sad day, and I was hoping to end it with a few laughs, but this episode was just a spoiled cherry on top of a awful day.
I miss when comedy had heart.

Discussion I always see Tina Fey talked about as the heir apparent to SNL when Lorne Michaels retires. No disrespect to Tina, but why do I never see Kenan Thompson in these discussions? He's been on SNL for nearly a quarter century now and his name is practically synonymous with the show.

Discussion What are some more popular, now everyday terms coined by SNL?
I described something as "mom jeans" today and made me wonder how many other now everyday terms were coined by SNL sketches?
EDIT
Okay, not 100 people just saying random popular SNL slogans and quotes....No. I said EVERYDAY terms we use casually in real life independent of SNL. "We talkin tech" is not that.
And also change "coined" to "popularized" because I forgot about the phenomenon of every time someone says a term was coined someone SWEARS up and down they were using that term in Schanectedvillestown, Alabama in the school yard in the 1950s!

Discussion Can I just say how much I already like Grace Reiter? She’s like a perfect combo of Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon, and she’s made me LOL whenever she appears! 😄
I honestly haven’t liked a newbie this much in ages, and I’m happy the writers are giving her plenty to do so far! 👏🏾

Discussion Cast member you are most surprised found success after leaving the show?
Jason Sudeikis for me. Solid player on the show. Didn’t really do wacky characters like Ferrell or Wiig but also not serious enough to be considered a leading straight man for anything else. I figured he’d always find work as the boyfriend that gets dumped or best friend of the main character

Discussion The "In Memoriam" bit is SO much better (and funnier) than trying to pretend the past never happened
Absolutely loved this last night night, it is SO much better to own up to your.. 'in-poor-taste' past and make fun of it than try to sweep it under the rug and pretend it never happened! I love that SNL does not apologize, they just move on. Plus it was absolutely hilarious!

It’s about ten years since this era of SNL (Aidy, Kate, Cecily, Beck, Kyle, Alex, Leslie, Pete, etc). What do you all think of them retrospectively?

Discussion This was probably Jane Wickline’s best week
And frankly, as a person who used to feel like she would be a one-and-done cast member, I now am glad she has stuck around.
I don’t know if she had been taking some acting classes or if the writers just got better about writing to her voice but at no point did I think “she seems like she doesn’t belong in this sketch” like I had in earlier appearances. She not only is not distracting from sketches but in some sketches she is the highlight.
For example, the Scandinavian sketch — her deadpan bizarre Scandinavian accent got some of the biggest laughs in the sketch.
This wasn’t a Bowen-iceberg episode for Jane, but it did highlight that she has far more potential.
Now if that Kam Patterson guy can take some acting classes … still wouldn’t help because being bad at acting is not the worst thing about him …
