BlueSky Post TIL 'Alarm' comes from the Italian 'all'arme' - meaning 'to arms!' - a warning shouted when soldiers needed to prepare for an attack. The word basically meant a call to battle! IMO The default iPhone alarm sound still feels like a call to battle

BlueSky Post TIL The word 'salary' is linked to salt! Latin 'salarium' originally referred to an allowance or payment associated with salt, a valuable commodity in the Roman world. That is also where the expression worth his salt' is often connected, but we don't know for sure about that.

Announcement Lingonaut iOS / Android Beta Update has released!
Lingonaut Build 250/Android Build 80
This is the big one! A what's new with Lingonaut post will be following soon but we wanted to push the update out first. As always, Both apps are at parity. The big addition this update is word hints! Finally when you're doing exercises and you can't remember what a word means you can just tap it to get the vocabulary translation, just like that other app!
Aside from that being this release's new feature, the changes and polish made has been largely directed at the onboarding flow, helping new lingonauts set their accounts up and get situated. In addition, Lingonaut now supports the new CN4 format which unlocks new question types, clearer guides and new possibilities for lingonaut!
It took a lot of work, and is a massive jump up both in features and polish so we hope you like it. You might notice a few new characters in there too..

Bug Report Speech volume in Android app - how to adjust?
Just downloaded the Android app to my phone and I can't adjust the speech volume using the phone's volume control.
The "effect volume" in the app works ok and is adjustable in the app settings but speech will not change volume and it's ridiculously loud.
Any ideas please as its been 4 months since this was last discussed and its unusable in its present form?

BlueSky Post TIL The English words 'lord' and 'lady' both come from the word 'loaf'. In Old English, 'hlafweard' meant 'keeper of bread' and eventually became 'lord'. 'hlæfdige' meant something like 'bread-kneader' and became 'lady'. So really, titles of nobility have roots in feeding people too
r/Lingonaut • u/bolts-at-lingonaut • 16d ago
BlueSky Post TIL the word 'muscle' literally means 'little mouse'. It comes from Latin 'musculus'. Ancient observers thought a flexing bicep looked like a mouse moving beneath the skin! Even Ancient Greek used the same word - 'mys' - for both mouse and muscle. And it might even be older!

BlueSky Post TIL Some of English's silent letters were added on purpose! 'Debt' was once spelled 'dette' and 'doubt' was 'doute'. In the 1400s and 1500s, writers added a silent 'b' to make these words look more like their Latin ancestors.

Question Where has my streak gone.
Even though I have completed all of the courses available, I still open the app (Android) every day to keep my streak going. I've opened the app this morning to find that the streak has been lost, why?

BlueSky Post TIL Lingonaut works with GrapheneOS , LineageOS , e/OS/ and more ! Maybe there can be a LingoOS some day? We can keep the AI out and regular functionality in !

BlueSky Post TIL A 'clue' used to mean a ball of thread. The meaning comes from the story of Theseus escaping the Labyrinth by following Ariadne's thread. So when you follow a clue in a mystery, you are still metaphorically following a thread out of a maze. I remember hearing this as a child!
r/Lingonaut • u/bolts-at-lingonaut • Sep 20 '26
BlueSky Post TIL In Middle English, 'girl' could mean any child or young person, male or female. Only later did it narrow to mean a female child. Even stranger, linguists still are not completely sure where the word itself came from!

BlueSky Post TIL Boston newspapers invented OK! 'OK' stood for 'oll korrect' - 'all correct'. Almost all the other abbreviations disappeared but 'OK' survived, spread worldwide, and became part of everyday language.

Bug Report MacOS Issue
Hello! I just downloaded Lingonaut via Test Flight on my MacBook Air. I checked and the software is completely up to date. I'm not sure if there could be an issue with Test Flight, or what it could be?
If there's a known fix, I'd love to find out! Thank you!!

Question Any estimation on a French course addition?
I just heard about lingonaut not even an hour ago, so I’m very new here and I hope what I’m asking isn’t annoying.
Ive been looking for a language learning app to replace Duolingo, and I’m very excited to support lingonaut in anyway I can! I’m a fairly high level in French as I’ve taken it all throughout my schooling, but currently use Duolingo as a way to “not lose” my comprehension. I know that even when French gets added, that it will probably be a small section, but I’d still love to hear any updates or estimation on when a French course will be added! Until then, I’ll be checking out Breton.
And devs- thank you for what you’re doing!

Megathread 🇺🇳 Welsh Megathread! - Bugs and Suggestions | September & October 2026
Hey everyone!
To reduce the number of posts about bugs clogging up the subreddit (there's a lot of bugs! It's a beta after all), we've created this megathread as well as others for you to posts your bugs and suggestions.
This means other stuff like fanart and whatnot can get the eyeballs on it that they deserve.
This helps us concentrate bug reports and suggestions in one place so that we can triage and fix them faster.
Please post bugs encountered only in this language! That will help us avoid confusion. You can also find this thread along with others in the sidebar.
