Showing Off Wheels and tires made a big difference

Thanks to the group and u/EngineeringWeak702 for advising that changing the wheels and tires first will bring about one of the biggest changes.

I went from the OEM rims to these 17“ TRD wheels and Falken WildPeaks (265 70 17).

I do have some slight rubbing on both sides… bought a heat gun and will try to push that plastic in a bit.

Cheers!

PS. first thing I did was install the Hamilton CarPlay. Highly recommend.

General Discussion Tacoma to GX460?

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hello everyone!

I currently own a 2019 Tacoma SR5 (third gen) and I’m considering getting a Lexus GX or GS350. I got a new job and will have a company truck and only really bought the Tacoma for work. I’m looking for something more comfortable and quiet. I don’t need a truck bed anymore and the Tacoma bed is kinda useless anyways.

The Tacoma does have some mods:
Method 703s
New Falken Wildpeak AT4W
Bilstein 6112/5160 for a 1.4” front lift
TRD skid

Taco has 67k miles

Anyone go from a taco to a GX. Thoughts?

Mechanical Advice 2012 GX burning smell from the top of the dash

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi everyone, maybe someone here can help me out with my problem. I have a 2012 GX with about 210k on the clock. I've got a burning smell coming from the top of my dash on the driver side near the windshield. It's definitely in the area pictured in my photo.

I've stuck my head about everywhere it can fit and it's definitely coming from that spot. You can smell it more when the speaker covers are off. You can smell it a little from the same area on the passenger side but not nearly as strong.

It's not the AC, the air from all the vents smells clean when it blows. There's no smell from the floor area under the dash on either side. It's not in the glove box or under it where the compressor is. You cannot smell it anywhere under the hood either or near the outside AC intake vents. It's for sure only inside the cabin in that one spot.

No smell underneath the car either, no oil leaks and nothing stuck to any of the exhaust system. It's been going on for months now but it's not constant, it comes and goes while I drive but lingers in the dash area when off.

I've had the coolant system repaired and the engine checked for oil leaks and everything is good now with no leaks. I did the AC refresh kit recently but that made no difference since the smell isn't coming from the AC.

Any ideas of what it could be? It's driving me crazy at this point not being able to get rid of that smell.

Mechanical Advice Big 120k Service - what did I miss?

2019 GX460 coming up on 120k miles soon. Plan on keeping it for a long time so want to make sure I’m not missing anything here. I’ve got all the fluids covered and have been doing those regularly so not asking about those.

-Drive belt
-Belt tensioner & pulley
-Spark plugs
-New radiator
-Radiator hoses
-Thermostat
-Water pump?

What did I miss? Is any of that overkill like the water pump maybe? A lot of this is labor overlap too so trying to keep that in mind also to save some $$$. Thanks in advance.

The plastic under my fender seems to have rotted away. I was wondering if this was caused for concern with rodents or if this happened to everyone.

General Discussion Odd issue shifting

19' GX with 98K miles.

When I shift into drive, it drives fine. Shifting into manual mode, it shifts through the gears. But when in Neutral, its still drives forward. When shifting into reverse, the car is basically in neutral. Reverse camera comes on. Possible improperly aligned neutral safety switch?

General Discussion 2020 GX460

I’m the original owner on this baby. I’m debating whether I should get a 50k service because of the age? I had done nothing but oil changes, air filters and tires.
What would you do?

I can't seem to find complete, GX-context video on this.

Does one need to remove the black trim covers ?

If you have resources on this task please share.

Mechanical Advice GX460 Class III Hitch Trailer Connections

For the Lexus OEM class IV hitch, the kit comes with an extension cable to tie the factory harness to the 4 pin/7 pin connector that comes with the hitch. I haven't been able to find something similar for the class III hitch. Has anyone else been able to find something that works for the class III hitch?

Purchasing Advice Looking for my first GX

Hey everyone!

So in the coming 6-12 months I'll likely be buying my first GX. I'm thinking the late 2010s GX460s (2017-19ish) but I'm not overly particular, as I'd certainly take an early 2020s if the price is right.

Ultimately, the goal is to a modest lift, tires, wheels and a better clearance front bumper, and to use the vehicle as a daily + light off-road and camping rig.

My questions are, are there any big things to watch for when buying? I've seen some people mention trans fluid and filters. But are there any other common weak points? What about common failures with slightly modified suspensions? Etc..

Also, I live in the Omaha,NE area. Any preferred mechanicsfor the GX platform in the area that you all may know of?

Thanks a bunch!

The stock taillights were one of the last vestiges of chrome on my 2015 460. These aren’t quite as dark as the Scarlet option but look great in my opinion. Might put a very light tint on them more for pfe then anything.

I freaking love this thing.

Purchasing Advice Gas mpg

So I have 18 Tacoma. I love trucks / suvs (that basically are trucks) but I’ve been looking at some vehicles tundra, gx taco, and was wondering what you guys were getting for mpg? I’ll prob put oversized tires on it. I’ve got 265/75 bfg ko2 and my mpg is around 15-18. I was curious if the mpg was like 13-15 or like 15-18? Just curious even the stock ones what others are getting! Thanks everybody. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I’d like a newish one 18 and up! The tundra’s DRINK gas and not opposed to it but curious if it was similar or a little more.

General Discussion Newborn car seat

We have a new born on the way and we will soon be shopping for a car seat and stroller. With the tight mid row room in the GX460, what rear facing car seat are you running which dont force you to move the front seat all the way forward?

Looking for something reasonable.

Thanks

Public Service Announcement Blown away after oil change.

Post image
75 Upvotes

Hear me out here... I have not been paying much attention to new technologies lately.

My new-to-me 2019 (just over 60k miles when I got it) was due for an oil change a couple months after purchase.

There was a sticker from the last one (not at the dealer) that noted 0W20 oil. When I went to the local parts shop I just asked for the best synthetic OW20- they had. I noticed it was pretty pricey, but in my mind I was paying the premium for performance and to go ~5k between oil changes.

I didn't even really look at the packaging.

I needed a light bar wired in, so I took it to my mechanic to do that and the oil change.

Afterwards, I noticed the packaging promising 25k between oil changes and better MPG.

I did notice that the motor sounded different, smoother... but I just filled up after the first tank post oil change and supposedly I got 22.4 mpg.

If I averaged ~17mpg prior it was a good tank.

My estimated tank mileage went from ~310-320 miles at fill up to 400.

I haven't changed my driving habits or anything... obviously I need to go through another tank or two to verify, but hell, even a modest mpg increase would have been welcome.

Anyone else run Mobil1 and notice a major difference?

I am admittedly out of date on my oil technology knowledge, obviously. I didn't even know 25k oil existed.

IF I am really going to get even more than 1-2 mpg out of this, it is well worth it.
