Pattern/Tutorial Beginner's Guide & Free Patterns

Hello, everyone! (Repost, because of link issues)

I wrote a fairly comprehensive beginner's guide to tools, materials, hardware, and leather. It has basics, a ton of tool upgrades you can make as you grow in the craft, and some free patterns. People have been asking me for it here and there, and I've been sending it to them individually. But now I've gotten it to a point I'm happy with (of course, it's being edited continuously), and I'm ready to share it with the sub.

Here's the link to the guide!

Also, here's a link to a video I shot to accompany it: Beginner's Leathercraft 101

Quick note, I started writing this guide before I became a moderator here, so I hope it doesn't come across as neglect on part of the sub's Wiki, which needs an overhaul. I'll be pinning this to the sub for a while until I have time to dive into the Wiki and clean things up, and hopefully it answers newbies' questions in the meantime. If anyone has any feedback or suggestions to add to the document, please let me know! Thank you to everyone who commented on the last post.

Community/Meta How would you change this sub?

Hello, everyone. Rather than make changes to the sub based on my own goals/desires, I wanted to ask the community. Is there anything you would add or remove from the sub? Any rules changes you'd suggest implementing? Any suggestions you have for the sub in general? If I see enough concensus around a certain suggestion, I'll consider making those changes moving forward. Let me know!

Obviously the sub is growing daily, and it's doing great. The formula is working, so I'm not looking to make big sweeping changes. I'm just wondering if you've ever had an idea that you feel would make this sub even better for you and your fellow leather crafters. (Bonus points if you have ideas for preventing the incessant "leather repair/is this leather" posts, lol.)

As part of my Faramir-esque ranger build plan I’ve finally finished making the leather cuirass.
What do you guys think?

Fully handstitched in an assortment of soft Italian leathers lined with 100% linen.
I’ve started doing leatherwork about a year ago and I’m quite pleased, only need to make the shirt now and it’s more or less finished!

And ofc the obligatory bracers of Gondor to go along with it

Bags/Pouches My second bag project, a dopp kit.

I definitely rushed through this one. And it’s less perfect than my first project, which was a laptop/messenger bag. But I’m still proud of it and will use it up. It could benefit from some Skiving on the seams but I don’t own an edger or Skiving tool yet and the zipper came out a little uneven but it’s my first zipper install so far. Could have been a little more careful with the stamping. Anyway I don’t mean to talk it down too much, I do like it, but let me know what you think!

Commissioned by a guy at my "day job" (I clerk for a farm/heavy equipment auction every few months) back almost a year ago. Dude gave me his Leatherman to make the sheath for it, then quit answering my calls and never came to get it. Guess I gotta show it off somewhere lol.

Wallets Octopus wallet - Cape Islander pattern by DSleathergoods

I put this thing together for an event that Deyan and OA leather supply are hosting. Please let me know what you think!

It's also available on my site, shoot me a DM if interested.

Holds 4 cards, external full length cash pocket.

I made the design to show off my favorite aquatic animal since I was a kid, and I'm pretty proud of it! Tools I used were a tattoo machine with tattooling catridges.

My brand stamp is on the interior of the cash pocket.

Other ideas you may have for a cash pocket design are also appreciated!

Discussion Elephant Leather - Controversial?

Thumbnail

Real Elephant wallet exterior with cowhide interior. Hopefully not too controversial, as this is CITES certified, to cull overpopulation in some areas of Africa. Lived a long happy natural life! (we won't speak on how most Cows are treated to get our meat and leather). My first time finally making something with this, been holding onto it for a while.

Don't know if I'll bring this to a market soon or keep it for online only. I know sometimes people don't like exotic leather and I understand why.

We do place more empathy on some animals more than others.

We'll see

Question Worth risking my first leather project to add a saddle-stitched pocket?

Thumbnail

I just finished two trifold passport covers (it’s my first leather project, please be nice) and want to add a sleeve on the back with saddle stitching. I don't have stitching chisels, but I have bookbinding awls, wood press, waxed thread and needles.
Is it worth the risk, and how would you punch even holes with improvised tools? I tried marking with a fork but struggled to make the holes big enough in a leftover piece.
I’m also considering just sewing a little pouch or buying a plastic one from Amazon.
Any tips or warnings are welcome!

Holsters/Sheaths My First Knife Sheath

I got the opportunity to make a sheath for a knife maker I’m acquainted with. I was fortunate enough to have someone who does this regularly to run my ideas by. I typically make wallets and bags, so it was fun to change it up a bit. If I could go back, I’d raise the buttons up a bit on the belt loop, but overall I think it turned out nice.

Question What's this buckle called?

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Hi there! I'm looking for buckles of this style and have no idea what to search for, maybe there isn't a name for it as it's custom to the designer?

https://uk.diesel.com/en/shoulder-bags/d-line-hobo-s-brown/X10729P9474T2224.html

The specific feature I want is the bar that comes off the back of the buckle, as I've circled in the photos.

Any thoughts/ideas would be fantastic please

Holsters/Sheaths I tried making a leather sheath using a knife I had crafted myself—just as a fun project—and I think I’ll have to dive deeper into leatherworking, as it’s a fascinating field.

Tips & Tricks What am I doing wrong?

Thumbnail

This my first project with leather, I’ve been trying to stitch this but this keeps happening and the needles keeps getting stuck in between and I have to use pliers to pull it ( one of my needles broke because of this ) also in the beginning when I did a backstitch to secure it I made sure both sides were the same length but when I pulled them to make the stitch, the left thread became shorter than the right

I only managed to do a couple of stitches before the needle broke.

How can I undo this knot in the first pic? Should I just cut it or?

Any tips would be helpful

Thank you

Hello! I've finished another bag, and I'm curious to hear what you think about it.

Cheers!

PS. I also made the strap from s-c-r-a-t-c-h (reddit AI protection does not like this word?), since it's not included in the pattern.

Belts/Straps First leather project - Mandalorian belt (feedback welcome)

Hello all! I’ve been interested in trying out leather working. I’m doing a Mandalorian costume for Halloween and decided it was the perfect project to explore leather working. I think I want to continue dabbling in leather working—

Any feedback or tips are welcome-this is far from perfect, but overall for a first project I think I did okay.

Here is my analysis-
Needs improvement: straight hole punching for stitches, holster - leaving more room between the edge and the stitches. Make sure punch holes in middle.

Things done well - wet forming, saddle stitching, creating my own patterns, burnishing??
