I live in vegas
I have a 2019 Mustang convertible with around 80K miles. It’s my second car, so I barely even drive it. Maybe 1,000 miles a year, if that. It’s mostly just sitting there looking cute until family comes into town or I feel like taking it out.
Anyway, I need to renew my registration, and of course, I gotta get a smog check every year. Only problem is my check engine light is on.
So I took it to Firestone on Maryland. They fixed what they could, but there were two issues they couldn’t figure out:
* PCM fault
* Cylinder #2 misfire
They told me I’d have to take it to Ford.
Cool. Took it to Ford, paid the $200 diagnostic fee, and these people came back telling me it would cost $4,000 just to tear the engine apart to figure out what’s wrong. Mind you, that’s BEFORE any actual repairs.
Yeah, no. I’m good on that. 😂
So I declined. Then, magically, the next day they called saying they think it’s coolant intrusion and that I might need a cylinder head repair.
Like, okay, so now y’all have an idea of what’s wrong?
Here’s my thing. I’m not trying to get rid of this car. It’s my second vehicle, I barely put miles on it, and I’d honestly like to keep it another 5–8 years. I don’t see the point of trading it in and taking on another car payment when I already have something I like.
I’m guessing the car is worth somewhere around $10K–$13K, so dropping thousands at the dealership just for them to possibly figure it out doesn’t sit right with me.
So I gotta ask y’all:
- Has anybody with a 2019 Mustang dealt with this cylinder misfire or coolant intrusion issue?
- Did you actually need a cylinder head repair, or did it turn out to be something simpler?
- Would I be better off finding a solid independent mechanic who knows Mustangs instead of dealing with Ford?
- Would buying the parts myself save money, or should I let the mechanic handle that?
- If you’ve had this issue, how much did you end up paying?
I’m not against paying to get my car fixed. I just refuse to throw $4K at a dealership for them to start taking stuff apart without even knowing what the final bill is gonna look like.
And I’m definitely not trying to trade in a perfectly good-looking Mustang just because of one check engine light.
What would y’all do? Anybody been through this? I’m just trying to get this thing fixed, pass smog, and keep my car without getting played on the repair costs. 😂
Appreciate any advice! And any mechanics you know that can help
