Question Why?

Relevant images are in my comment below.

I'm an amateur stained glass artist, making confirmation gifts for my loved ones. My pieces kept coming out wonky---not fitting together at all---and I thought I was losing my mind until I discovered this.

Does anyone here know the story or the relevant graphic design principles? I am so curious now. Once you see it, you can't unsee it

Thanks all!

On a related note, here are the LCMS brand guidelines (including restrictions on use): https://files.lcms.org/dl/f/D60C6C20-51F3-46DB-BAF1-81D754174DD5

From Ready to Harvest on the meaning behind our logo (among many others): https://youtu.be/cK1TLiayQD4

From that video: "The four arms appear to be in motion as we urgently tell the world what God's love in Jesus Christ means to us". That seems to be the answer, creating a feeling of motion.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the top and bottom match each others angles, along with the left and right?

Yep, you are correct! All 4 outside arms are the same, and then the two insides obviously have to be a 45.

I'll check out those links, thank you!

And thanks for the reminder on the brand guidelines---I have indeed submitted the necessary permission requests, plus I'll never be selling these or making it a commercial venture

I'm not a graphic designer, but isn't it generally accepted that perfect symmetry triggers uncanny reactions in most people? Isn't this why Googles logo isn't actually a perfect circle and the colors aren't evenly spaced?

Interesting, I didn't know that about Google. Are you referring to the Chrome Logo, or the big G logo? I'm looking at them both right now for reference

Can you link directly to the Reddit thread? Reddit doesn't like that type of share URL which tracks for Google ad services

And, my bad approximation of what it would look like with consistent angles
