Discussion Skirt / Kylie and left-field pop

Post image
111 Upvotes

As a newer fan - is it true that this single got flack at the time?

I think it’s a great song and would’ve loved her to explore this dubstep area more. It’s interesting to consider especially now as the sound is making a small comeback here and there in pop.

I know that the single came out a while ago and was experimenting a bit, but it does make me worried that if she were to making something left-field now, would she catch flack for it?

I feel like we’re wanting an ‘experimental’/pushing-the-boundary album with whatever album is next - but would it be well received? Madonna and Gaga’s recent albums have kind’ve been just a homage to their previous sounds, with more emotional layering/storytelling. Could Kylie’s next album be something similar - or something more inspired I wonder.

Either way I’m sure it’ll be great quality - it’s a Kylie album at the end of the day!

Review My straight male best friend listened to Kylie's discography. Here's what he thought (+ ranking!)

I did something these past two weeks I've always wanted to do. My straight guy best friend has always been interested in getting into the music and artists I've always loved, so we spent the last two weeks listening to the complete discographies of two of my favorite artists: Madonna and Kylie Minogue.

He knows who both of these women are of course, but he's only ever really heard the biggest songs and never dug deep into their whole catalogues. So he came over to my house every day and we got through one or two of their records so he can experience everything! Soon we'll do music videos and tours, but for now, we just did the records.

He wrote down his brief thoughts on each album and shared them with me, and I'm sharing them here plus his final ranking! I just thought it was neat to hear a straight man who is very much not in the queer culture that surrounds in particular Kylie give his thoughts on the songs. It did not go quite as expected, but in a way I love. His likes surprised me!

Kylie (1988)
"Extremely, extremely 80s in a way that is both cool and kinda tiring toward the end. I don't think the people she was working with really knew what to do with her. There's some really good, fun songs on here but also a lot of filler (mostly filler?). Not a super strong start, but the songs that work really work."
Favorite Song: I Should Be so Lucky
Least Favorite Song: Look My Way

Enjoy Yourself (1989)
"Step backwards from the first album. In a lot of ways it's kinda more of the same, except the best songs on it aren't as good as the best songs on the first one. Kinda copy and paste, kinda boring, and again, whoever's producing it isn't really playing to her obvious strengths. No real standouts on this one. Disappointed."
Favorite Song: Wouldn't Change a Thing
Least Favorite Song: Tell-Tale Signs

Rhythm of Love (1990)
"Way, way better than the last one! Feels like we're finally moving forward a little bit. She sounds better, the production sounds better, and there seems to be a little bit more of an actual point and vision. It's not quite fully formed in the way I hoped it'd be three albums in, but we've got some definite highlights and even the songs i wasn't crazy about were still pretty high above the worst tracks on the last two."
Favorite Song: Step Back in Time
Least Favorite Song: Things Can Only Get Better

Let's Get to It (1991)
"This isn't the album I thought I was gonna get based on that really striking cover and I was kinda disappointed in it. It's not bad. It's just kinda fine. After moving forward on the last one it kinda feels like we're spinning our wheels again. Nothing on here's bad, but nothing stands out as really great either. Kind of a shrug of an album."
Favorite Song: Finer Feelings
Least Favorite Song: Give Me Just a Little More Time

Kylie Mingue (1994)
"She really kinda sets up the other nine songs up for a losing battle by starting with Confide in Me. One of the best songs I've ever heard. Like wow. This is the leap forward I was waiting for. And the great thing is even though the other nine don't come close to Confide in Me, they're all still pretty good and some of them are even really great. This album just feels more grown, sounds better, is written better. Really great time. Love the sound and vibe of this thing. I was getting bored with her, but I'm so back."
Favorite Song: Confide in Me
Least Favorite Song: Automatic Love

Impossible Princess (1997)
"Way out of left field but I dig it. In terms of the several more experimental albums from the major pop girls in the late 90s this is probably my least favorite of them but that's not a slight at all. There's some super adventurous sounds in this. The way she changes her voice and her singing is super cool, and she sounds really into these songs and committed to them in a way that I hadn't heard from her yet. It's kinda messy sometimes, but the messiness kinda makes it? Not perfect, but I'm into it."
Favorite Song: Some Kind of Bliss
Least Favorite Song: Jump

Light Years (2000)
"I just had a huge smile on my face through this whole thing! What an excellent time. The production is leaps forward from anything before this. The melodies are catchier, her voice is more full and interesting. This is capital c Camp and I loved every second of it. Every track on this is a winner. This one's gonna be hard to top."
Favorite Song: Light Years
Least Favorite Song: Please Stay (i still like it)

Fever (2001)
"Based on the singles that I knew I wanted this to be better than it was. Those singles still absolutely bang but very few of the album tracks really stuck with me. I understand why those singles properly broke her in places around the world that had been holding out, but all I could think about when this was done was how Light Years should have had the success that this did."
Favorite Song: Can't Get You Out of My Head (duh)
Least Favorite Song: Your Love

Body Language
"Horniest Kylie album so far and I dig it. It hasn't aged super well sound wise but in a way that sounds really nostalgic rather than cringe. It's very of it's time but I really kinda like it. I'm super intrigued by the style she performs this one (Kylie rap?? okay!). It's not got anything as big and flashy as the last two, but it is way more consistent than Fever. Fun one."
Favorite Song: Red Blooded Woman
Least Favorite Song: I Feel for You

X (2007)
"Yeah I really fuck with this. Super cool soundscape. Catchy melodies. She sounds like she's having a great time with this one. I love the more electronic sound she's going with here a lot. Nothing on it is like career defining good, but it's all just a super consistent, strong, fun to listen to album. Great comeback record after what was an extremely difficult time for her."
Favorite Song: Speakerphone
Least Favorite Song: Cosmic

Aphrodite (2010)
"This is excellent. Some career best singles propped up by one of her strongest selections of album tracks ever. This thing just sounds so big and euphoric. It's full of energy. This really kinda gives me the same feeling that Light Years did, just a decade of more polish. Fantastic stuff."
Favorite Song: Closer
Least Favorite Song: Too Much

Kiss Me Once (2014)
"Based on the background I got about this one I think it's controversial to say that I liked this one. It's a mess. I get why people aren't super into it. But I think it's a charming mess. Campy at times, super sexed up at other times (dethroning Body Language as her horniest maybe). Production is kinda bland but she makes up for it with her attitude and swagger on this thing. It's a little colder sounding than I'd like, but I think these songs are more fun than they maybe get credit for by the sounds of it."
Favorite Song: Into the Blue
Least Favorite Song: Fine

Golden (2018)
"Kinda out of nowhere. Her commitment to the country-pop thing is admirable and it has some great results sometimes but kinda boring ones other times. I almost think she should've gone even more country than she did. Imagine Light Years type camp but make it country. That would've been legendary. As is it just kinda feels unlike her and not in an experimental way, just a sort of anonymous way. I really missed the Kylie vibes. She plays this a little too seriously. I don't know how much I'll return to this one."
Favorite Song: Dancing
Least Favorite Song: Live a Little

Disco (2020)
"Real breath of fresh air. We've got production that sounds huge, the camp vibes have returned, the melodies are once more infectious. This is just such a great time. This is the kind of sound that she does so well. Really great from start to finish. No notes."
Favorite Song: Say Something
Least Favorite Song: Where Does the DJ Go?

Tension (2023)
"This feels like a giant leap into the future for her. This thing sounds so cool. This is a sound I didn't expect from her but one that suits her super well. I do think the first half of it is generally better than the second half but there's nothing on this that I really dislike. Padam is the first song of hers i ever heard back when it went viral and I was pleased to find that that vibe is all over this thing. Really great."
Favorite Song: Vegas High
Least Favorite Song: Green Light

Tension II (2024)
"Not as good as the first one, but I still like it. It definitely has the vibe of an album that wasn't supposed to exist and feels very much like a bunch of cut tracks smushed together. But the sessions for this album seemed to be fruitful because some good stuff came out of it! It's not as fresh or interesting, but still great to listen to."
Favorite Song: Taboo
Least Favorite Song: Dance Alone (we need to let Sia go as a culture)

Overall Thoughts
"SUPER fun discography. Love her voice a lot. She's at her best when she's really leaning into that camp, smiley, bubbly thing that she does so well. I don't think her catalogue is as strong as Madonna's overall, but she can stand toe to toe with Madonna with some individual tracks. I see why people love Kylie so much and by the end, honestly I really loved her too. I'm excited for what she does next and to get to experience an era as a fan in real time. This was great. She's great!"

FINAL ALBUM RANKING
1. Light Years
2. Aphrodite
3. X
4. Disco
5. Tension
6. Body Language
7. Tension II
8. Kylie Minogue

10. Impossible Princess

Discussion Kiss Me Once defenders, rise!!!

Post image
150 Upvotes

We all know the story- Kylie signed with Roc Nation, they linked her up with Sia, Sia & Kylie cooked up about three different album's worth of material- an urban pop album, an indie album & a pure pop album- and, in the end, the album we got was Kiss Me Once.

Massively underrated by pop stans, deeply mishandled by its label, and even ignored by Kylie when initially releasing the Step Back in Time greatest hits compilation, Kiss Me Once joins X and Impossible Princess as part of a group of Kylie projects that didn't fully land upon release.

And yet... there are those of us who love it.

I, for one, adore the melancholy running through most of the album. It's in Into The Blue, If Only, Fine, I Was Gonna Cancel. I am an uber fan of Sexy Kylie returning on Sexy Love, Sexercize, Les Sex & Mr. President as well.

What about y'all? Any fellow Kiss Me Once enjoyers out there? If so, what drew you to the album when it dropped? What makes it slap for you still, if it does?

Warmth!

Discussion Was Kiss Me Once the end of Kylie’s hit-chasing era?

Does anyone else feel like Kiss Me Once was the last era where Kylie was really trying to chase mainstream pop hits?

I actually really like Kiss Me Once, and songs like Sexercize and Million Miles are some of my favourites. But there’s something about that era that feels different when you look at everything she’s done since.

I feel like back then there was still a real push to make Kylie fit into the mainstream pop landscape and compete with what everyone else was doing. The whole Roc Nation era, the sound, the image, the collaborations… it all felt like an attempt to get that big hit again.

Then from Golden onwards, something just seemed to shift. Her albums started feeling more like she was doing what she wanted rather than trying to keep up with whatever was happening in pop at the time.

Golden, Disco and Tension all have such different identities, but they feel very Kylie in their own ways. And ironically, Padam Padam ended up being one of her biggest moments in years without her seemingly trying so hard to have a hit.

I feel like she stopped trying to prove she could still be a mainstream pop star and just started embracing who she is as an artist. Obviously, she still wants success, but the approach feels different now, even in the way her albums are released and promoted.

I sometimes wonder if Kiss Me Once was the last time she felt the need to chase that kind of mainstream success, and whether everything since has been about finding her own lane instead.

Does anyone else get this feeling, or am I reading too much into it?

Other A Very, Very Short Bit of Kylie History

Post image
147 Upvotes

From a 50p flea market find to one of the most iconic outfits in pop history:

Kylie’s legendary gold lamé hot pants from the Spinning Around video are currently on display at the Australian Museum of Performing Arts in Melbourne as part of its exhibition ENCORE! 50 Objects. 50 Years.

The infamous shorts were originally purchased secondhand in the late 1990s for just 50 pence at North End Road Market in West London by Kylie’s friend, photographer Katerina Jebb.

Upon the release of Spinning Around in June, 2000, the British tabloids became obsessed with Kylie’s derrière. CNN later described the press commotion as a “campaign to have her backside declared a UNESCO World Heritage site of outstanding natural beauty.”

Kylie even joked in an interview at the time: “I should just send the hot pants out to do interviews… forget about me!”

The gold shorts and the provocative Spinning Around video are widely credited with helping reintroduce Kylie as a dance-pop diva after the disappointing commercial performance of 1997’s Impossible Princess. Both Spinning Around and the album Fever topped the UK and Australian charts, cementing her comeback and proving that Kylie could reinvent herself.

The hot pants became so sensational that rumors once circulated they were insured for $2 million.

In hindsight, not a bad return for a pair of 50 pence secondhand shorts!

Discussion Geeky radio edits and mixes on Greatest Hits and streaming

I know over the years streaming has differing versions of some songs wrongly on the albums and for example the Australian greatest hits from 98 and original greatest hits from 1992 had single edits etc ? Does anyone know what the different versions not on streaming or exclusive to the hits or singles are ? I don’t trust the internet always captures the sacred texts 😆of us owning the cd back in the day! Thank you

Discussion Netflix Serious “Tension Tour” Questions

The time has come for me to ask something I’ve been wanting to talk about since the release of the tension tour on Netflix. I do love a lot about it, but I couldn’t help but notice the majority of the footage is from Mexico. The concert starts with (what I believe is) the 2nd opening night at Madison Square Garden. I really had high hopes there would be more official footage of MSG. I’m sure everyone has the same preference for the medium where they were, but New York City is after all, NYC… a REALLY big deal. However, I feel we were cheated in a sort of way. There was apparently preference for the Mexico show footage. I don’t want to sound malicious but I’m guessing the team were either cutting corners, or cutting costs… some mediums didn’t even make it to this Netflix release. I was hoping every song would show a different medium (that would’ve been way more fair) and I’m aware buying the footage from MSG would’ve cost an enormous amount of money. I saw many people here on Reddit say there was “no way” MSG footage was going to be on a DVD version of the show because they didn’t “see cameras recording”. That’s not true, the proof is that the tour starts with “Light Camera Action” from MSG. I’d like to know if there’s any chance there will be a DVD/Bluray version with more footage of more Tension shows around the world. I don’t want to sound critical but this show comes with the quality you’d expect from Netflix and I feel many fans were let down. How do we all feel about this?

So I initially preordered this from
Mattel then a 2nd on Amazon, not realizing it would be so mass produced. I kept one in the box and the other is on a window in my office you can see when you walk into my apartment- Kylie greets those who enter.

I figured now that I see it’s still mass produced and on Amazon down to $30.50, I may just take Kylie out of her box. I mean really I should get 2 more. There seems to be a lot of quartet Kylie’s - à la Did It Again, Come into my world, Tension videos.

My friend makes doll clothes and maybe I should get her to make the Did it again outfits.

Discussion What makes the X (2007) album click for you?

Post image
131 Upvotes

It is widely known that X (2007 or 08, depending on where you were located) came out to a very mixed reception. Hardcore electro, celebratory sexy lyrics, futuristic visuals... all after Kylie thankfully survived her first battle against cancer, and the general public was expecting weepy introspection instead.

If you're one of the rare group of folks who didn't ever feel lukewarm about the album- what made X strike a chord for you as a Kylie album? What about it worked for you? What didn't, but still kept you engaged?

In my case, I loved hearing her continue to experiment. Speakerphone, In My Arms, Wow, Nudity, All I See, Cosmic, Sensitized, and so many of the other tracks just completely elevated me. They didn't feel like a rehash of past Kylie, and I loved that! I still do. I also never understood the criticism saying the album lacked introspection- No More Rain, Cosmic & Stars are right there, and i love them too.

What about y'all?

Discussion Does Kylie wear wigs?

Genuine question. I'm quite sure she has short hair, like shoulder length, and she uses hair extensions. But lately it seems to me that she shifts more often from dark blonde to light brown and I was wondering if she just uses wigs from time to time.

Discussion Best Euphoric Tracks

Listening on my way to work on a cold October morning in the UK. The sun is bright, the sky diffused with beautiful oranges and yellows, but there is a mist and a crispness in the air. Hold On To Now came on and it was absolutely perfect. There is something in the way that it builds that makes me feel slightly better about going to work 😅

What are your favourite euphoric dance pop Kylie songs. I'm going to make a playlist for pre work listening. I think my favourites are HOTN, The One, All the Lovers. Open to any and all suggestions 🙏✨️💖💕😘

EDIT: Thank you all so much for your suggestions. I'm going to really enjoy putting this playlist together ❤️

Discussion Abundance of unreleased material

I'm kinda surprised to see is that there is SO much Kylie material that has been leaked. X alone has about 30 songs (and counting) that I could find full length studio versions of on YouTube. Aphrodite, Body Language, and Kiss Me Once have like a dozen songs each as well, and counting.

I'm just not sure how I feel about so much of Kylie's work being leaked over the years, as recently as songs from both the Tensions. As a fan, just gimme more and more Kylie material and I'm satisfied, but I also listen to Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Sabrina Carpenter, etc., and I don't even see a fraction of their material ever being leaked like this, let alone over so many years.

Not sure if Kylie herself is aware of these leaks of full length studio versions being on the internet for so many years. I'm sure as an artist she would be a tad bit upset because I guess she is in a position in her career where she COULD have authorized a release by arguing with the label if she REALLY wanted these songs to see the light of day. I remember reading something that the label didn't want No More Rain on the record and she fought for it to be included so I guess if these songs were unreleased, it was for a reason. idk.

What do y'all think?
